Scientists date an ancient impact crater by dating suitable minerals formed or reset during the impact, then use rock layers, fossils, and impact debris to connect that age to the surrounding geological record. Fossils usually help establish relative age and match layers; they do not directly provide a radiometric date for the sediment that contains them. At Chicxulub, radiometric ages of impact materials and evidence linking crater rocks to ejecta at the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary support an age of about 66 million years.
What a radiometric date actually dates
Radioactive parent isotopes decay into daughter products at predictable rates. By measuring their proportions—often with a mass spectrometer—geochronologists can estimate when a suitable mineral formed or when its isotopic system was reset. The result is an age for that mineral and the event recorded by it, not automatically for every nearby rock or fossil. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) explains the methods and their limits in its guide to dating rocks.
In an impact crater, molten target rock can cool into impact melt. Minerals that crystallize in that melt may record the impact-related cooling event. Interpretation depends on geological context: a mineral grain may have formed before the impact and been incorporated into the melt, or later heating and alteration may have changed its isotopic record. The USGS account of Chicxulub reports argon dating of melt rocks and evidence from drill cores (1992 study record).
How fossils and sedimentary layers fit into the timeline
Common sedimentary rocks such as sandstone, limestone, and shale generally cannot be directly dated by standard radiometric methods. Geologists instead establish the order of beds from their positions and contents. Fossil succession helps identify whether layers are relatively older or younger and correlate them between locations. Dated igneous rocks or other time markers can then bracket sedimentary layers and place their relative sequence on a numerical timescale, as the USGS explains in its geologic-time overview.

So a fossil-bearing bed may be constrained by dated layers above or below it, or by a distinctive event deposit it can be correlated with. Finding a fossil does not, by itself, give the surrounding sediment a direct radiometric age.
How scientists test the age of Chicxulub
The Chicxulub case combines several kinds of evidence rather than relying on one date. Core samples contain shocked breccia clasts—broken rocks altered by the impact—and impact melt whose chemistry and radiometric age resemble ejecta in K/Pg boundary deposits. The distribution of ejecta thickness and shocked-grain size with distance also helps connect those deposits to the crater. Together, these observations support identifying Chicxulub as the source of impact material at the boundary. The USGS record of the 1992 study uses the older term Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) for what is now called the K/Pg boundary (USGS study record); David A. Kring’s 2016 review describes the impact as contemporaneous with the mass extinction around 66 million years ago (Lunar and Planetary Institute review).

How the main dating approaches differ
| Approach | What it establishes | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Radiometric dating | A numerical age for a suitable mineral’s formation or isotopic resetting. | The mineral’s history and geological context matter; its age does not automatically date adjacent sediment or fossils. |
| Fossil succession and stratigraphy | The relative order of sedimentary beds and correlations between them. | These methods do not independently yield a direct radiometric age. |
| Paleomagnetism | Magnetic direction recorded in rocks; in a calibrated context, it can help constrain age. | It is most useful alongside other evidence, including radiometric dating. |
| Carbon dating | The age of suitable organic carbon material over comparatively recent timescales. | It does not directly date rocks and is not appropriate for a 66-million-year-old impact. |
The USGS emphasizes that no single geochronological method applies to every situation: “There are many ways to date rocks and geologic events. Not every technique will be applicable to every situation, so geologists have to be strategic with the geochronologic methods they apply.” (USGS dating guide)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How precise is the published Chicxulub age?
The cited sources support describing Chicxulub as roughly 66 million years old, but they do not establish the latest formal calibrated age uncertainty. The diameter figures in the same sources also differ: Kring’s 2016 Lunar and Planetary Institute review describes a 180 km structure, while the USGS record for the 1992 study describes a 200-km-diameter structure. These are source-specific approximate estimates, not a single reconciled exact measurement.

It is important to distinguish the impact’s age from the ages of older target rocks, inherited mineral grains, later sediments, and fossils in the surrounding sequence. The dated material must be tied to the impact through its geological setting and supporting evidence.
