Radiometric dating can estimate elapsed time in years, but a date may mark crystallization, an eruption, cooling, or later resetting—not automatically the formation age of every part of a rock.
How do scientists determine how old rocks are?
Geochronology is a toolkit, not a single test applied to an entire rock. Geologists first ask what event they need to date, then select a sample and method suited to that question. A zircon crystal, for example, can preserve evidence of magma crystallization; another mineral may record when a rock cooled or was later heated.
Two broad kinds of evidence work together:
- Relative dating orders events: one layer or feature is older or younger than another.
- Numerical dating estimates when an event occurred in years, commonly by measuring radioactive isotopes.
The sequence established by relative dating gives numerical results their geological context. The U.S. Geological Survey’s geologic time scale overview and the National Park Service’s overview of dating methods describe how these approaches complement one another.
How relative dating establishes the order of events
In an undisturbed stack of sedimentary layers, lower beds were generally deposited before the beds above them. Geologists also examine fossils and the relationships between rock units to correlate sequences across different locations. These observations can show which rocks or events came first without assigning an age in years.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Relative dating is especially useful when a rock itself cannot be dated directly by a suitable radiometric method. It can constrain where that rock belongs in a sequence and help connect it to dated layers or events nearby.
How radiometric dating turns isotope measurements into an age
Some isotopes are unstable. A radioactive parent isotope transforms into a daughter product at a characteristic rate, described by a decay constant. The half-life is the time it takes for half of a population of parent atoms to decay. In a laboratory, scientists measure isotope abundances or ratios in selected material and use the parent-daughter relationship and decay rate to estimate elapsed time.

The USGS lists these half-lives on its radiometric dating overview. They are properties of isotope systems, not the ages of particular samples or measures of dating accuracy.
| Parent-to-daughter system | Half-life listed by USGS |
|---|---|
| Uranium-238 → Lead-206 | 4.5 billion years |
| Uranium-235 → Lead-207 | 704 million years |
| Potassium-40 → Argon-40 | 1.25 billion years |
| Rubidium-87 → Strontium-87 | 48.8 billion years |
| Samarium-147 → Neodymium-143 | 106 billion years |
These are the values shown on the USGS overview; its page does not state a publication date for them. A long half-life does not, by itself, mean a method is more accurate or suitable for every sample. The USGS notes that the principle is simple in theory but laboratory procedures are complex because isotope quantities must be measured precisely. See its radiometric dating explanation and additional USGS discussion of radiometric dating.

Why zircon is useful for uranium-lead dating
Zircon (ZrSiO4) commonly forms in granitic and other igneous rocks and can incorporate uranium as it crystallizes. That makes it useful for uranium-lead (U-Pb) dating. When the geological setting supports that interpretation, a zircon date can indicate when the crystal formed as magma crystallized.
Not every zircon necessarily formed with the rock in which it is found: crystals can be inherited from older material, and later events can affect their isotope systems. The date therefore needs to be interpreted alongside the grain’s history and the surrounding geology. The National Park Service explains zircon’s uranium incorporation and U-Pb utility in its dating-method overview.

What other dating methods record
Radiometric dating is not the only way to establish geological timing. USGS describes radiometric methods, cosmogenic surface exposure dating, and paleomagnetism among commonly used geochronological approaches. They record different kinds of events, so there is no universally best method.
| Approach | What is examined | What it can help date or establish | Key interpretive consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radiometric dating | Radioactive parent and daughter isotopes in selected minerals or material | An event recorded by that isotope system, such as crystallization, eruption, cooling, or resetting | Mineral choice, sample history, and isotope-system disturbance affect what event the date represents. |
| Cosmogenic surface exposure dating | Cosmogenic evidence in exposed rock | How long a surface has been exposed | It addresses exposure history, rather than automatically dating when the rock originally formed. |
| Paleomagnetism | Magnetic record preserved in rock | Magnetic history that can help establish timing and correlate geological records | The magnetic record must be interpreted in its geological setting. |
The USGS Yellowstone Volcano Observatory guide describes these approaches and explains that 40Ar/39Ar dating, based on potassium-40 decay, is used to determine when volcanic rocks erupted. It also distinguishes radiocarbon dating: carbon-14 is useful for organic material, such as charcoal beneath a lava flow, and does not directly date ancient inorganic rock. See the USGS guide to dating volcanic rocks. The National Park Service also lists U-Pb, K-Ar, Rb-Sr, and Re-Os systems among methods applied to Grand Canyon rocks in its overview.

Why sedimentary rocks are often dated indirectly
Sandstone, limestone, and shale are made from deposited material, so the minerals in them may have formed long before the sediment was laid down. Common radiometric techniques on suitable igneous minerals therefore do not usually give the deposition age of these sedimentary rocks directly.
Instead, geologists can constrain the sedimentary layer using datable volcanic ash or igneous units above or below it, together with fossils and stratigraphic relationships. A dated layer beneath gives one boundary and a dated layer above can give another; the resulting bracket limits when deposition occurred but does not turn the crystallization age of sediment grains into the age of the sedimentary rock. The USGS explains the role of dating and stratigraphy in its radiometric dating overview and relative time scale.
What a rock date means—and what can affect it
A numerical date applies to the geological event recorded by the measured material. Depending on the mineral and circumstances, that can be crystallization, eruption, cooling, or a later event that disturbed or reset the isotope system. The USGS describes radiometric techniques for Earth rocks as measuring the last time a rock was melted or disturbed enough to rehomogenize radioactive elements; that is why a measured age is not automatically the age of every component in a rock. See the USGS explanation of how geologists date rocks.
Several issues shape interpretation:
- Inherited grains: a mineral may predate the rock that now contains it.
- Alteration or isotope movement: later gain or loss of isotopes can affect the recorded relationship.
- Heating or disturbance: a later event may partially or sufficiently reset the system, so the date reflects that event rather than initial formation.
- Measurement and interpretation: precise laboratory isotope measurements are necessary, but a precise measurement still needs a geological explanation.
There is no single accuracy figure that applies to every method and sample. A meaningful uncertainty is specific to a study, its measurements, and its assumptions. In a USGS publication on interpreting 40Ar/39Ar data, the agency emphasizes that inferring a geologically meaningful age from measured dates depends on the question and assumptions associated with the data. See the USGS data-interpretation publication.
