SaveNowX’s developer says the extension usually sends a direct MP4 from X’s CDN to your device, without the video passing through SaveNowX’s backend. When a post is available only as an HLS stream, however, the backend fetches and remuxes the video segments before streaming the result to you. The claim of not “storing” videos refers to persistent server-side video files; it is a developer-reported description, not an independent security or privacy audit.
How SaveNowX finds a video
SaveNowX is a browser extension that adds a download button to supported X videos. Its Chrome Web Store listing describes it as free and says an account is not required. The listing is available at Google Chrome Web Store; it also says the extension handles website content and is independent from X.
According to developer DEV LAHCEN’s implementation account, when a user supplies a public X post URL, SaveNowX first tries X’s public syndication endpoint and falls back to yt-dlp when needed. The developer says this resolution step returns metadata and video CDN URLs without downloading the video bytes. Successful resolutions are reportedly cached by post ID for one hour; genuine “no video” or “not found” results are cached for five minutes. Those are reported cache settings, not measured speed or performance figures. Read the developer’s account.
Finding a video’s URL and delivering its video data are separate operations. The developer describes two delivery paths, depending on what kind of video stream is available.

What happens when a direct MP4 is available?
For a post with a direct MP4 URL, the developer says SaveNowX routes the download through a Cloudflare Worker that adds a Content-Disposition: attachment header. The video itself travels from X’s CDN to the user’s device; in this common case, the developer says SaveNowX’s backend does not receive the video bytes.
DEV LAHCEN summarizes this route by writing, “The result: for the common case, the video goes directly from X’s CDN to the user’s device.” This statement describes the direct-MP4 path only, not every download SaveNowX handles.

What changes when a post is HLS-only?
Some posts, according to the developer, provide an HLS playlist (a .m3u8 file) with video split into small .ts segments instead of a progressive MP4. In that case, SaveNowX’s backend fetches the segments and uses yt-dlp and FFmpeg to remux them into a finished file, then streams that file to the user. The developer says the temporary file is deleted after it has been sent.

How the two delivery paths differ

These are implementation details reported by the developer, not independently established findings about production behavior. The available material does not independently demonstrate actual server logging or retention settings, or the temporary-file deletion lifecycle.
Does “without storing” mean no data is processed?
No. A claim about not retaining a video file does not establish that no URL, metadata, network request, temporary file, or other data is processed. The developer describes resolving post URLs and metadata, and the HLS path necessarily involves backend processing of video segments.

X separately documents that it collects information from signed-out visitors, including IP address, browser type and language, referring page, access times, pages visited, and cookie-related identifiers. X also says cookies and local storage support some site functions, and that its technologies are used on sites integrating X services or advertising technology. These X disclosures do not establish what SaveNowX itself logs. The Chrome Web Store listing discloses website-content handling and points to a developer privacy policy, but the policy’s details are not established here. X has a built-in “Download video” feature for some posts. X Help Center says Premium subscribers can download videos uploaded from July 25, 2023 onward unless the uploader disables downloads while composing the post; videos posted before that date are not downloadable through this feature. X also says accounts belonging to users under 18 have the download setting switched off. These are rules for X’s own feature and do not establish which posts a third-party extension can download.

For protected posts, X says, “If your posts are protected, only your followers can view your videos in your posts.” X also warns that followers may still download or reshare links to videos in those posts. These platform controls and caveats are described in X’s video help page.
