Galaxy Z Fold gestures depend on what you want to do, which screen you are using, and your One UI version. Back, Home, and Recents are system-navigation gestures; split-screen and pop-up view use separate optional controls; unfolding can continue selected apps; and Flex mode has its own touchpad on supported apps. Samsung notes that features and settings can vary by model, carrier, software, and app.
How do you go Back, Home, and open Recents?
Start by checking your installed One UI version at Settings > Display > Navigation bar. The basic gestures changed in One UI 6.1, so the same swipe may not behave the same way on every Fold.
One UI 6.1 and later
- Back: Swipe inward from either the left or right edge of the screen.
- Home: Swipe up from the bottom edge.
- Recents: Swipe up from the bottom edge and hold.
Samsung says gesture hints are unavailable on One UI 6.1 and later. If you need to change how easily an edge swipe registers, open Settings > Display > Navigation bar > More options and adjust gesture sensitivity. [Samsung’s Navigation bar guide]
One UI 6.0
Samsung describes the older three-zone gesture layout: swipe up from the left bottom zone for Recents, the center for Home, and the right for Back. Follow the instructions for the version installed on your phone rather than assuming every Galaxy Z Fold uses the newer edge-and-bottom pattern. [Samsung’s Navigation bar guide]

Position the navigation bar on the main screen
On the large main screen, the navigation-bar position can be set to the left, center, or right. When Taskbar is enabled, Samsung limits the available position choices to left or right. These placement settings affect navigation-bar positioning; they are separate from the optional multitasking gestures described below. [Samsung’s Navigation bar guide]
How do you open two apps with a swipe?
Multitasking swipes do not replace Back, Home, or Recents. On the Galaxy Z Fold7, enable them at Settings > Advanced features > Multi window. Turn on the specific gesture you want to use:

With Swipe for split screen enabled, swipe up from the bottom using two fingers to move the current app into split-screen mode. To place it on a particular side, swipe inward from the left or right edge with two fingers. These are Fold7-specific instructions; do not assume the same gestures or screen availability on another Fold model. [Samsung’s Fold7 cover and main screen guide]

Use the Edge panel instead
If you prefer to choose apps rather than use a gesture, swipe left on the Edge panel handle on the right side of the screen to open its app tray. Drag an app toward an edge to start split screen or toward the center for a floating pop-up window. App support and available options can vary. Samsung’s general Multi window guide says split-screen and pop-up view are not supported on the front screen of Fold series devices, while its Fold7-specific guide describes multitasking gestures on either screen. When the instructions conflict, check the guide and settings for your exact model and software. [Samsung’s Multi window guide] [Samsung’s Fold7 cover and main screen guide]
Why does a gesture work differently on the cover screen?
The cover and main screens have separate display areas and may not offer identical settings or app behavior. Basic system-navigation gestures are distinct from Fold-specific multitasking options, and feature availability depends on your model and software. Samsung also cautions that its available screens and settings can differ by device, wireless provider, and software version. [Samsung’s Navigation bar guide] [Samsung’s Multi window guide]

Continue an app when unfolding
To select which cover-screen apps can stay open as you unfold the phone, go to Settings > Display > Continue apps on cover screen. Continuity is app-dependent: an app you have not selected, or one that does not support the behavior, may close rather than continue on the main screen. [Samsung’s open-or-closed guide]

Keep Home-screen layouts in mind
Items added to one screen’s Home screen may need to be added separately to the other. Samsung identifies Home-screen mirroring support on Galaxy Z Fold3 through Fold7; if the option is available on your phone, mirroring can keep the layouts aligned. [Samsung’s open-or-closed guide]
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does Flex mode’s touchpad do?
Flex mode is a separate interaction mode, not another Back or multitasking gesture. Partly fold the phone and, when the app and device support it, the app can appear in the upper portion while controls appear below. If the Flex mode panel offers a touchpad, drag a finger across it to move a cursor over the app, then tap to select. Not every app supports the panel or its touchpad controls. [Samsung’s Flex mode guide]
Quick checks when a swipe does not work
- Check the One UI version: The One UI 6.0 three-zone layout differs from the 6.1-and-later edge and bottom gestures.
- Check the setting: Multitasking gestures are optional; on the Fold7, enable them under Settings > Advanced features > Multi window.
- Check the screen and model: Front-screen multitasking guidance differs between Samsung’s general guide and its Fold7-specific guide.
- Check app support: Split screen, continuity, and Flex mode controls do not work with every app.
- Check navigation sensitivity: On One UI 6.1 and later, adjust it under Settings > Display > Navigation bar > More options.
For exact menus and supported gestures, use Samsung’s instructions for the specific Fold model and software installed on your device.
