Retro consoles used specialized video chips—not modern programmable GPUs—to build game images as the television scanned them. These chips fetched reusable tiles, arranged them with maps, drew moving sprites, and combined the layers in real time. The details differed by console: the NES and SNES show how the approach evolved, while the Sega Master System offers another tile-and-sprite design.

How a console drew a picture one scanline at a time

A television image is a raster: the display is drawn in horizontal lines, from top to bottom. A console’s dedicated video processor worked in step with that process, fetching graphics data and composing the picture as the raster advanced. Rather than asking the CPU to calculate every screen pixel, the system’s video hardware performed a narrower set of rendering tasks designed for that console.

This was a specialized, largely fixed-function approach, not the broad programmable rendering associated with modern GPUs. It was effective because games could represent much of a scene compactly and let the video chip handle repetitive work. There is no single universal date at which every console crossed from this kind of design to a modern GPU architecture.

How tiles and maps built backgrounds

Tiles stored reusable patterns

A tile is a small graphic pattern that can be reused across a scene. On the NES, background graphics were organized as 8×8 tiles held in pattern tables. Reusing these small patterns meant a game did not need to store a unique picture for every screen position.

Tile maps placed patterns in the scene

A tile map is a plan that tells the video processor which tile belongs in each background cell. Depending on the system, map entries can also carry display attributes such as palette, priority, or flips. As the view moved, a game could scroll the background beneath the visible area and update map entries rather than redraw the whole screen. NES games could also use cartridge mappers to swap tile data or pattern banks.

The SNES applied the same basic idea across multiple backgrounds. Its PPU reads map and tile data as it draws each line, fetching graphics from VRAM. The maps describe a larger tiled world; the video processor turns the relevant part into the visible background during the scan.

How hardware sprites handled moving objects

Sprites are separately defined graphics objects, commonly used for characters, enemies, and projectiles. Instead of having the CPU paint each moving object pixel by pixel, a game supplied attributes such as a sprite’s tile, position, palette, and flip settings. The video processor used those entries to draw objects over or among background layers.

Sprite hardware made moving objects convenient, but it had capacity limits. The documented limits below apply to these particular systems and should not be generalized to every retro console.

When a game placed more objects on a line than its hardware could handle, some might disappear or flicker, or developers might arrange objects carefully to stay within the limit. Flicker can have other causes too, so a specific game’s behavior should not be attributed to sprite limits without evidence.

How scrolling and raster effects worked

Scrolling usually meant changing the offset at which a background map appeared, making the tiled world move beneath a fixed display window. Developers could also change scroll or display settings while the image was being drawn. With different values on different scanlines, a game could create effects such as wavy backgrounds or split-screen views.

SNES documentation describes updating scroll values per scanline and moving map data into VRAM during vertical blanking—the interval between frames when the display is not drawing the visible picture. Mid-screen changes were easier to implement on the SNES than on the NES, according to the SNES developer reference. These techniques relied on coordinating software changes with the video hardware’s raster timing.

What varied between retro consoles

“Retro console graphics” describes a broad era, not one shared design. A useful comparison looks at how each machine represented backgrounds, how its object hardware was organized, what limits applied during each scanline, and how easily developers could change display settings mid-frame.

  • Backgrounds: systems could differ in tile organization, map size, and number of background layers.
  • Objects: sprite capacity and scanline-fetch limits affected how many moving graphics could appear together.
  • Raster control: systems differed in how conveniently software could update scrolling or display registers during a frame.
  • Data movement: graphics patterns and maps lived in system memory, and games refreshed or swapped data as scenes changed.
  • Hardware role: the video chip handled a console-specific set of tasks; the NES and SNES are examples, not a definition for every machine.

The Sega Master System is another example of a console using tiles for backgrounds and sprites, as covered in a Carnegie Mellon University lecture on console architectures: Visual Computing Systems: History of Console Architectures.
