Ray-traced structured-light simulation aims to make synthetic depth data more like what a real depth camera captures by simulating both projected gray-code patterns and the reconstruction process. In a 2024 ICRA paper, Kaixin Bai and colleagues used this approach to generate RGB-D training data and labels for robotics tasks, including object detection, instance segmentation, and grasping. Their results are a task-specific demonstration—not proof that synthetic data closes the sim-to-real gap for every sensor or factory.

Why idealized 3D renders can fall short

A depth camera does not simply report an object’s perfect geometric surface. A gray-code structured-light camera projects patterns into a scene and reconstructs depth from how those patterns are observed. If a simulator renders only idealized geometry, its synthetic depth can omit artifacts and sensor-specific effects introduced by pattern illumination, scene interactions, and reconstruction.

Bai, Zhang, Chen, Wan, and Zhang frame data acquisition and labeling as barriers to adopting deep learning in industrial robotics. As the authors put it, “Despite the substantial progress in deep learning, its adoption in industrial robotics projects remains limited, primarily due to challenges in data acquisition and labeling.” The paper proposes a way to create labeled synthetic data while modeling more of the sensing process.

How the ray-traced pipeline works

  1. Render projected gray-code patterns. The simulator sends structured-light patterns into the scene rather than treating depth as a direct readout of perfect object geometry.
  2. Simulate light transport. Its physically based rendering pipeline uses Blender and NVIDIA OptiX ray tracing to model pattern illumination and scene interactions.
  3. Reconstruct synthetic depth. The projected patterns are decoded and reconstructed into depth images, allowing the output to include structured-light noise.
  4. Attach training labels. The generated data includes RGB and depth along with ground truth such as object poses, boxes, and segmentation.

This end-to-end approach matters because the simulated depth comes from a modeled sensing process, not only from the underlying 3D scene. That makes it possible to train and evaluate perception systems using synthetic RGB-D examples with labels that would otherwise require collection and annotation.

What the paper evaluates—and what it does not establish

The authors report evaluating the generated data in industrial grasping-related scenarios, including object detection, instance segmentation, and robotic grasping, and describe a real-world robotic demonstration. This supports the approach as a promising pipeline for those reported applications. It does not establish equal transfer across all structured-light cameras, materials, factories, or object categories, nor does it provide a universal guarantee of improved real-world performance.

The paper focuses on ray tracing’s benefits and does not compare ray tracing with rasterization or other rendering approaches. It therefore cannot support a measured claim that ray tracing is more accurate, faster, or otherwise superior to those alternatives. The work describes a method and its applications rather than a controlled comparison of renderer performance.
