Pink sheep are rare in Minecraft. Both the current Java Edition and Bedrock Edition release notes describe them as a rare spawn, but neither publishes a percentage. The figure you will often see, 0.164% (about 1 in 610), comes from spawn rules that predate the Spring to Life update. Treat it as a historical number, not today’s confirmed odds.
What the current release notes say
Java Edition 1.21.5 (Spring to Life)
The Spring to Life update made sheep color depend on the biome where they spawn:
- Temperate biomes: white is the common color.
- Cold biomes: black is the common color.
- Warm biomes: brown is the common color.
The release notes call pink a rare spawn in all three biome categories. They do not give a probability for any of them.
Bedrock Edition 1.21.70 (Spring to Life)
The Bedrock release notes for 1.21.70 make sheep color biome-dependent in the same way and describe pink sheep as rare in temperate, cold, and warm biomes. Like the Java notes, they give no numerical chance.

Where the 0.164% figure comes from
The number people quote is taken from a community-maintained Minecraft Wiki table that lists natural sheep spawn rates under the rules in place before Spring to Life. Those rules split adults and babies:

| Sheep group | Figure in the wiki table | Rules it describes | Status today |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adult pink sheep | 0.1558% | Pre-Spring to Life natural spawning | Historical; not current |
| Baby pink sheep | 0.0082% | Pre-Spring to Life natural spawning | Historical; not current |
| Combined total | 0.164% (about 1 in 610) | Pre-Spring to Life natural spawning | Historical; not current |
The adult and baby figures sum to the 0.164% total. Because the table is explicitly tied to the older spawn rules, it should not be presented as the chance of finding a pink sheep in a game running Spring to Life or later.

That is community discussion about the earlier mechanics. It is useful background, but it is not official confirmation of any current rate.

Why you cannot quote an exact current chance
The current official notes for Java 1.21.5 and Bedrock 1.21.70 establish that pink sheep are rare. They do not establish a current exact probability. That is a gap in the published information, not evidence that the game uses a different number. Phrases such as “exactly 1 in 610 today” go beyond what the official sources support.
The notes also do not say whether any biome makes pink sheep more likely than another. They only say pink is rare across the temperate, cold, and warm categories.

Separating natural spawns from other pink sheep
When you judge rarity, only sheep that spawned naturally in the world count. Several other routes produce pink sheep, and none of them tell you anything about natural spawn probability:

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Dyed sheep: a sheep of any color can be dyed pink, so a pink sheep you dyed is not a natural find.
- Spawn eggs: a spawn egg creates a sheep on demand. The 2021 discussion that repeats 0.164% covers spawn eggs, but a spawn egg is a deliberate action, not a sample of natural spawning.
If you are testing rarity yourself, count only pink sheep you find in the wild, and note the biome each one spawned in.
