A Cambridge team’s 100-leaf artificial tree was designed to use sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into syngas. During an outdoor demonstration in Ispra, Italy, low gas production and cold overnight temperatures created underpressure; a faulty valve then let corrosive potassium hydroxide solution enter and degrade the device. The episode showed why promising leaf-level laboratory results are not enough to establish that a complete solar-fuel system can work reliably outdoors.
What is an artificial tree for solar fuel?
It is a photoelectrochemical device: sunlight drives chemical reactions intended to make fuel, rather than electricity alone. The Cambridge prototype combined 100 artificial leaves across a reported area of 0.35 m². Each leaf had an area of 0.001 m² and used a tandem arrangement of light-absorbing materials and catalysts. Chemistry World’s 2025 report describes the system as operating in potassium bicarbonate buffer saturated with carbon dioxide.
On the light-absorbing side, each leaf paired a bismuth vanadate photoanode with a cobalt-based water-oxidation catalyst, and a perovskite photocathode with a copper–indium catalyst for carbon-dioxide reduction. The intended product was syngas, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Syngas is a chemical feedstock, not a single pure fuel; the device’s goal was to make it from sunlight, water, and CO₂.

The system also required fluid and gas handling. Chemistry World describes valves and two tanks: potassium hydroxide solution absorbed excess carbon dioxide, while carbon monoxide and hydrogen bubbled through and accumulated in a tank’s headspace. Those components made the apparatus an integrated reactor, not just an array of light-absorbing leaves.

What happened to the Cambridge device in Italy?
The team was one of three invited to demonstrate a device at a three-day event at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Ispra. The weather was mainly overcast, and a thunderstorm occurred on the first day. According to Chemistry World, insufficient syngas production combined with low overnight temperatures caused underpressure in the system. A faulty valve then drew potassium hydroxide solution into the device. The corrosive alkaline solution degraded it and depleted carbon dioxide, further reducing syngas production.
The report gives predicted quantities based on earlier tests—220 ml of carbon monoxide and 910 ml of hydrogen—but does not state the actual volume produced during the Ispra demonstration. Those figures should therefore not be read as measured field output, nor does the available report establish that the device produced no gas.

Why did the smaller tests not reveal the same problems?
The evidence came from tests at different scales and under different conditions. Each step offered useful information, but none made the full Ispra outcome inevitable or guaranteed:

A smaller or controlled test can miss problems that arise only when components interact at larger scale. In Ispra, gas production, overnight temperature, pressure, valve operation, fluid chemistry, and material durability were linked: one weakness in the gas-handling system allowed the alkaline solution to damage the device and undermine the reaction further. The report does not establish a specific rainfall amount as the cause; it describes the weather and the failure sequence, rather than attributing the damage to a quantified downpour alone.

What does the demonstration say about scaling solar fuels?
The Cambridge team assembled the tree over two months, with five postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers. Chemistry World reports that they selected vacuum processing because they considered it scalable. Team leader Erwin Reisner said the experience placed greater emphasis on scalable processing methods, not only materials, adding: “if you cannot make these square metres quickly and cheaply it will be very difficult to make things at the required scale.” The statement points to a separate engineering challenge: even a device that works in small tests must be manufacturable and robust across larger areas.
A 2025 paper by V. Andrei and colleagues in Energy & Environmental Science is identified by DOI 10.1039/d4ee05780e. Its surfaced description reports modular perovskite–BiVO₄ artificial leaves made using vacuum processing and a 10 × 10 reactor measuring 0.7 × 0.5 m² demonstrated at the EIC Horizon Prize event. The description also reports 10 cm² photovoltaic devices sustaining a 1 V photovoltage and tandem photoelectrochemical devices operating for over 36 hours in tests. These are distinct reported device and test details; they do not supply the missing actual gas volume from the outdoor demonstration or establish commercial production performance.

Why do solar-fuel devices need outdoor testing?
Outdoor demonstrations test the parts of a technology that laboratory measurements may not capture: changing light and temperature, pressure shifts, fluid movement, sealing, valves, material compatibility, and the behavior of a complete system over time. The Cambridge experience illustrates that a promising light-driven reaction is only one part of a working solar-fuel device. Reliability depends on keeping the supporting hardware and chemistry functioning together.

Jingshan Luo of Nankai University, who was not involved in the project, said the work “provides valuable lessons on the discrepancies between ideal laboratory settings and real-world challenges” and could encourage efforts to improve device robustness. These are researchers’ interpretations of the demonstration, not proof that the engineering barriers have been solved.

The event also had a competition outcome: the report says a team from Japan won with an artificial-photosynthesis system that generated methane and used it to power an engine. That result is separate from the Cambridge team’s syngas device and does not change what its Ispra test established.
