Quantum computing could help materials researchers investigate molecular effects or screen candidate materials in new ways, but no broad improvement in discovery speed or cost is established by the examples described here. The collaborations combine quantum algorithms and hardware with materials expertise, industrial problems, classical high-performance computing, and experiments—capabilities no single partner necessarily brings alone.
What “efficiency” could mean in materials research
Efficiency is not one metric. A computational method might help researchers reject unsuitable candidates before attempting synthesis, explore a wider set of possible structures, calculate a molecular property, or use fewer resources on a specific industrial process. Each is a different outcome, and success at one does not establish the others.
For example, Fraunhofer ISC says digital simulation can screen out unsuitable candidates earlier and help identify promising materials. That is a proposed way to focus research effort, not a reported count of experiments saved. The institute and Algorithmiq identify resource-efficient magnets with reduced rare-earth content as a possible application, not a demonstrated commercial result.
To assess an efficiency claim, ask what task was performed, what classical method it was compared with, which metric improved, and under what hardware and software conditions. A calculation can suggest that a material or reaction deserves attention; synthesis and characterization are still needed to establish whether a candidate can be made and whether it behaves as predicted.

How partnerships connect quantum and materials expertise
Quantum-computing collaborations can join algorithm development and access to quantum processors with skills that sit elsewhere: chemical and materials modeling, fabrication, synthesis, measurement, industrial problem selection, and classical supercomputing. Their practical value depends on getting those parts to work together around a well-defined research question.
| Collaboration model | What the partners contribute | Application or program | What has been reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| Research institute and quantum-algorithm company | Fraunhofer ISC contributes materials synthesis experience and digitalization; Algorithmiq contributes quantum algorithms and molecular-simulation expertise. | Materials development, including possible high-performance magnets with less rare-earth content. | The partners announced a memorandum of understanding on May 19, 2026. The stated applications are research targets, not reported general speedups. |
| Industrial company and quantum-computing vendor | BMW Group brings industrial chemistry problems; Quantinuum provides quantum-computing systems and chemistry collaboration. | Catalysis, reaction pathways, energy-related materials performance, and electrochemistry relevant to sustainable mobility and fuel cells. | In a May 5, 2026 announcement, the companies described work dating to 2021 and a multi-year extension. They reported a specific 2024 catalytic-performance simulation with another commercial partner, with results published in a Nature journal. |
| Shared-access research program | Oak Ridge National Laboratory connects researchers from national laboratories, universities, and private businesses with quantum systems and traditional supercomputing. | DOE-relevant science projects, including quantum materials, sensors, algorithms, and simulation. | ORNL’s July 27, 2025 account said the Quantum Computing User Program hosted more than 100 projects and provided access to nearly 20 quantum computers. |
The models solve different access problems. A focused partnership can align a quantum method with a specific materials or chemistry target; a user program lets more research groups try approaches across different systems and compare them with conventional supercomputing.
How a hybrid quantum-classical workflow is intended to work
Near-term materials work is hybrid rather than a wholesale replacement of classical computing. In the workflow described by Algorithmiq and Fraunhofer ISC, quantum processors address difficult quantum effects in molecules, while classical computers handle optimization and data analysis. Classical simulation and high-performance computing remain essential components of the work.

- Choose a consequential materials question. Define a target such as a molecular property, a catalyst reaction, or a candidate magnet, and decide what result would be useful to chemists or materials scientists.
- Assign work to the right methods. Identify which calculation might benefit from a quantum processor and which parts—such as optimization, data handling, or comparison—remain classical.
- Benchmark against strong classical methods. Compare the quantum-assisted approach with state-of-the-art classical computation using fair resource assumptions. Fraunhofer ISC and Algorithmiq say a useful advantage must be executable on current hardware, relevant to materials exploration, and validated against such classical methods.
- Test the prediction in the lab. Use synthesis and characterization to check whether predicted candidates can be produced and whether measured properties match the calculation.
Fraunhofer ISC director Prof. Dr. Miriam Unterlass described the possibility of finding unanticipated promising candidates as identifying “white spots” in materials space—materials researchers may not have explicitly been seeking. That possibility is a motivation for exploration, not evidence that a quantum system has already found such a material.
What the current collaboration examples target
Fraunhofer ISC and Algorithmiq: exploring materials space
The May 19, 2026 memorandum of understanding focuses on quantum computing for materials development. Fraunhofer ISC says simulations could help screen candidates and make it possible to explore a broader materials space. One named prospect is a high-performance magnet with reduced rare-earth content. The announcement describes aims and expectations, not a measured reduction in discovery time or cost.
Quantinuum and BMW Group: chemistry for catalysts and energy
Quantinuum’s May 5, 2026 announcement describes a collaboration with BMW that began in 2021 and has progressed from algorithm development to molecular-system simulations. Target areas include catalytic activity, reaction pathways, energy-relevant materials, and electrochemical processes related to sustainable mobility and fuel-cell design. One specific target is oxygen-reduction chemistry at platinum catalysts, with the aim of potentially lowering costs and improving energy efficiency.

The companies also said that they and another commercial partner simulated catalytic performance using a quantum computer in 2024 and published results in a Nature journal. This is a reported result for a specific catalytic problem; it does not establish a general quantum advantage in materials discovery. Quantinuum said BMW would use its current Helios system and planned future Sol and Apollo systems, with the latter systems planned for 2027 and 2029 respectively. Those dates are plans, not evidence that the systems are already available.
ORNL: broadening access and cross-system comparison
ORNL says its Quantum Computing User Program, created in 2017, gives outside researchers access to superconducting-circuit and trapped-ion qubits and the opportunity to compare quantum approaches with traditional supercomputing. Its account also describes the DOE Quantum Science Center’s work on quantum materials and sensors, algorithms and simulation, and methods for coupling quantum computers with conventional supercomputers.

The relationship runs in both directions: materials science is used to develop quantum-computing hardware itself. A National Institute of Standards and Technology account from April 2025 describes the SQMS Nanofabrication Taskforce, which brings together Fermilab’s SQMS center and NIST groups working in metrology, nanofabrication, and materials science.

NIST reported best-performing qubit coherence times of up to 0.6 milliseconds in the nanofabrication work. The account discusses encapsulating niobium surfaces with gold or tantalum to limit lossy niobium oxide, and describes other interfaces and sapphire substrates as then limiting coherence times to approximately 1 millisecond. These hardware-specific figures concern qubit behavior; they are not measurements of faster or cheaper materials discovery.

On June 23, 2026, the U.S. Department of Energy announced its Quantum Genesis initiative. DOE described a planned 2028 competition targeting fault-tolerant systems with logical qubits in the low hundreds, a proposed National Quantum Supercomputing User Facility, and focused application research and development. Chemistry and materials science are among the intended application areas.
These are announced plans, not delivered facilities or present-day system capabilities. They indicate an effort to build future infrastructure and application work, but do not demonstrate that quantum computing currently outperforms classical methods on materials research.

How to judge a materials-computing collaboration
Announcements can describe very different stages of work—from a proposed target to a published simulation—so evaluate the evidence at the level of the specific task. Useful questions include:
- Is the problem concrete? Look for a named reaction, property, or materials objective rather than a broad promise to accelerate discovery.
- Are experimental capabilities connected? Determine whether partners can synthesize and characterize candidates, or whether the work is limited to computation.
- What does the quantum processor do? Separate its role from classical optimization, data analysis, and high-performance computing.
- Is the comparison fair? Check whether the benchmark uses strong classical methods and clearly states resource assumptions and the metric being compared.
- What stage is the claim at? Distinguish a proposed application, active research, a specific published simulation, and a validated material or industrial outcome.
For now, the strongest case for collaboration is that it brings complementary expertise and enables testable experiments in chemistry and materials science. Whether that becomes a practical efficiency gain depends on the problem, the classical baseline, the hardware and algorithms, and validation beyond the simulation.
