Quantum computers process information by preparing qubits, transforming their states with quantum gates, then measuring them to produce classical results. A qubit can have contributions from both 0 and 1, but that does not mean a computer can read both answers or efficiently search every possibility at once. The computation works only when gates and measurements are arranged to make useful outcomes more likely.

What is a qubit?

A classical bit stores either 0 or 1. A qubit is a quantum system described by a state with contributions from two basis states, written |0⟩ and |1⟩. Those contributions are called amplitudes. Until measurement, the qubit is not simply a classical bit whose value is hidden; its state can combine both possibilities.

For example, applying a Hadamard gate to a qubit initialized in |0⟩ produces an equal superposition. Measuring that qubit in the computational basis returns 0 or 1, each with probability one half. The amplitudes help determine measurement probabilities, but they are not separately available as ordinary output. NIST’s introductory explanation of building quantum computers uses this as a basic illustration.

More qubits mean a larger state space

For a register of qubits, the state can involve combinations of the individual qubits’ 0 and 1 basis states. NIST illustrates the growth this way: two qubits have four basis-state combinations, three have eight, and four have 16. Each added qubit doubles the number of combinations represented in the state-space description. These counts do not mean the computer can independently read out that many answers.

How do quantum gates and circuits work?

A quantum circuit is an ordered sequence of operations on qubits. Gates transform the quantum state; the circuit diagram shows how those operations are arranged from inputs through to measurement. A gate is a mathematical operation on a qubit or qubits, not necessarily a separate physical component analogous to a transistor.

Single-qubit and two-qubit gates

  • Single-qubit gates change the state of one qubit. The Hadamard gate, for instance, takes |0⟩ to an equal superposition of |0⟩ and |1⟩.
  • Two-qubit gates couple two qubits. They can create entanglement, a quantum relationship in which the joint state cannot be described as independent states for each qubit. Entanglement is an important resource in quantum computing.

The gates and their order matter: they determine how amplitudes change and how the qubits become correlated. IBM Quantum Learning introduces qubits, gates, circuits, superposition, measurement, and entanglement in its “Bits, gates, and circuits” lesson, authored by Kifumi Numata and dated 19 April 2024.

What happens when a qubit is measured?

In the computational basis described in Qiskit’s documentation, a single qubit is measured in the Pauli-Z basis. The result is classical: either 0 or 1. The probability of each result is the squared magnitude of the state’s overlap with the corresponding basis state. A measurement therefore samples an outcome according to the state; it does not reveal every amplitude or every possible answer at once. See IBM’s documentation on measuring qubits.

The measurement basis matters: the probabilities are defined relative to the basis being measured. In a circuit, gates can first reshape the state so that measurement is more likely to return information relevant to the computation.

Does a quantum computer try every answer at once?

No—not in the sense of producing or letting you inspect all answers. Superposition can support a kind of parallel computation, but the final measurement still returns a classical outcome, not a list of all possibilities. Simply putting candidate answers into superposition does not provide an efficient brute-force search.

NIST quotes Stephen Jordan, identified there as a Google quantum computing researcher and former NIST staff member and Joint Center for Quantum Information and Computer Science fellow: “But contrary to popular belief, this doesn’t allow quantum computers to do an efficient ‘brute force’ search over all the potential solutions.” The algorithm must arrange the computation so that useful information survives in the measurement. Jordan puts the design challenge this way: “The key is to design the measurement so that it extracts useful information about the whole set of results done in superposition.”

That is why quantum speedups depend on matching an algorithm to a problem, not merely increasing the number of qubits. Superposition and entanglement are tools for manipulating a state; neither makes every computation faster by itself. NIST explains these limits in its overview of quantum computing.

Why are quantum computers difficult to build?

Qubits are fragile. Environmental disturbances can disrupt superposition or entanglement, and operational errors can interfere with the intended computation. Scaling therefore requires controlling and connecting many qubits while managing errors. A large state space is useful only if the hardware can preserve and manipulate the required states reliably.

Trapped-ion and superconducting qubits

NIST’s broad comparison highlights different engineering tradeoffs rather than a universal winner:

Platform State lifetime and fragility Operation speed Fabrication approach
Trapped-ion qubits Can sustain superpositions for a long time Relatively sluggish Not stated in the cited NIST overview
Superconducting qubits More fragile and shorter-lived Allow fast computation Can use existing chip-manufacturing techniques

These are general platform characteristics, not a ranking for every workload or a claim about the performance of a particular current device. The choice involves balancing state preservation, operation speed, and practical ways to build and control the hardware.

How the pieces fit together

  1. Prepare: initialize qubits in a known state, such as |0⟩.
  2. Transform: apply gates to change individual qubit states and, where needed, couple qubits through entangling operations.
  3. Measure: choose the measurement basis and obtain classical outcomes whose probabilities follow from the resulting state.
  4. Interpret: use those outcomes as the algorithm’s result; a single measurement does not expose the full quantum state.

The key distinction is between the quantum state the circuit manipulates and the classical data it returns. Qubits and gates shape probabilities; measurement turns the outcome into bits a conventional computer can use.
