Puppeteer checks whether a browser provider handles the requested browser, platform, and build ID before it asks that provider for a download URL. A positive supports result is not proof that the archive exists or that its browser binary will run with your Puppeteer version: those are separate checks.

What Puppeteer checks

The installation flow passes a requested browser, platform, and build ID to each provider. The provider’s supports method answers whether it handles that browser/platform combination. As the implementation comment puts it, the check is: “does this provider support this browser/platform?” Puppeteer’s install implementation shows this sequence.

This is a provider-capability decision, not a test that launches a browser, validates a binary, or proves the requested archive is available. The build ID is also passed through the provider flow, so a provider still needs to supply a usable URL for the requested build.

How the installation flow proceeds

  1. Choose a platform. If the caller does not specify one, Puppeteer attempts automatic platform detection. If it cannot determine a platform, installation throws an error instead of proceeding with a download.
  2. Build the provider sequence. Supplied providers are considered first. If a baseUrl is supplied, Puppeteer adds a DefaultProvider configured with that URL. The ordinary default provider is appended when there is no baseUrl, or when forceFallbackForTesting is enabled.
  3. Call supports. Puppeteer provides the browser, platform, and build ID to the current provider.
  4. Skip unsupported providers. If supports returns false, Puppeteer continues to the next provider.
  5. Ask for a download URL. A supported provider is asked for a URL. If it returns null, the next provider is tried. If it returns a URL, Puppeteer attempts installation from it.
  6. Continue after installation errors. Failures are recorded and the flow tries later providers. If all providers fail, Puppeteer throws an error reporting the provider failures.

These behaviors are described in the implementation for installation and provider options. The repository link points to the mutable main branch, so details may change; check the source matching your installed release when debugging version-specific behavior.

Do not confuse provider support, download availability, and compatibility

Question What answers it What it does not establish
Does this provider handle the requested browser and platform? The provider’s supports result. That a download URL exists, responds, or contains a runnable binary.
Can a download URL be reached? canDownload checks provider support, obtains a URL, then makes an HTTP HEAD request. It returns true when one such check succeeds. That the binary is compatible with your Puppeteer release or will launch successfully.
Which browser version is documented for this Puppeteer release? The release-to-browser mapping in Puppeteer’s supported browsers guide. That a different browser version, provider, or binary is covered by the same compatibility statement.

Use canDownload when you need the separate URL-availability check; a successful supports result alone does not perform it. The check is documented in the implementation of canDownload.

What changes with custom providers or a base URL

Provider order matters

Because providers are checked in sequence, a supplied provider can handle a request before the default fallback is reached. A provider that declines through supports, returns no URL, or fails during installation allows the flow to continue, subject to the provider list and fallback configuration.

A supplied baseUrl changes the fallback

A baseUrl adds a default provider configured to use that URL. In the ordinary arrangement, Puppeteer does not also append the unconfigured default provider when a baseUrl is supplied. Setting forceFallbackForTesting enables that ordinary default provider as an additional fallback. See the provider options in the install source.

Custom-provider support is not a Puppeteer guarantee

Puppeteer’s API documentation says custom providers are not officially supported. Users are responsible for binary compatibility, testing, and maintenance; Puppeteer tests and guarantees compatibility with its default binaries. So a custom provider returning true means that provider says it can handle the request—not that Puppeteer guarantees its binary will work. Puppeteer’s API documentation describes the provider model and compatibility caveat.

Check browser-version compatibility separately

Puppeteer downloads and uses a specific Chrome version by default. Its configuration guide also documents using another Chrome or Chromium executable by setting an executable path. Read the configuration guide for the applicable settings.

The installation guide says Puppeteer automatically downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing version and a chrome-headless-shell binary; the latter has been included since Puppeteer v21.6.0. It identifies $HOME/.cache/puppeteer as the default browser cache location beginning with v19.0.0. These are version-scoped documented defaults, not guarantees for every setup. Check the installation guide for your release and environment.

For a compatibility question, consult the supported-browser table for the exact Puppeteer release you installed. Its mappings change over time. The guide says that if an exact Puppeteer version is absent, use the browser version listed for the immediately prior Puppeteer release; do not treat a mapping for another release as universal. See the supported-browser mapping.

Diagnose a skipped or failed provider

  • The provider is skipped immediately: inspect its supports logic and confirm it accepts the requested browser and platform. Also confirm that platform detection succeeded or pass the intended platform explicitly.
  • The provider says it supports the request but installation moves on: check whether it returned a URL for the requested build ID. A null URL advances to the next provider.
  • The URL is returned but download fails: provider support does not guarantee reachability. Use canDownload to perform its HTTP HEAD availability check, then investigate the URL or network failure reported during installation.
  • A custom binary downloads but does not work: verify compatibility against the supported-browser table for the installed Puppeteer release and test the custom binary yourself; custom-provider compatibility is not guaranteed by Puppeteer.
  • The expected fallback is absent: review whether baseUrl was supplied and whether forceFallbackForTesting is enabled. The former changes which default provider is appended.
  • Installation fails after all providers: read the reported provider failures in order. Each earlier provider may have been skipped, returned no URL, or encountered an installation error.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does supports confirm the browser can launch?

No. It indicates whether the provider handles the requested browser/platform combination. It does not launch or validate the binary.

Does Puppeteer check whether a provider’s download URL exists?

Not as part of the supports decision. The separate canDownload function obtains a URL and checks it with an HTTP HEAD request.
