Use Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools together: Google reports impressions for links shown in Google Search’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, while Bing reports citations in supported Copilot, Bing, and partner experiences. These are different measurements, not interchangeable counts. Review page-level activity and trends within each platform, then investigate changes against each report’s coverage and limits.

Which tools report AI search visibility?

The two relevant first-party dashboards are Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Neither is a universal tracker for every AI assistant or answer engine; each reports only the experiences and metrics it supports.

Tool and report Experiences covered What it measures Key limits
Google Search Console: Generative AI performance report AI Overviews and AI Mode in Google Search. Generative AI visibility in Discover has a separate report. Impressions over time, with page, country, date, and device views. Search Labs experiments are excluded. Recent data can be preliminary, standard Search Performance limits apply, and dates use Pacific Time. Aggregation can vary across chart and table dimensions. ( Google Search Console Help )
Bing Webmaster Tools: AI Performance Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations. Total citations, average cited pages, URL-level activity, sampled grounding queries, and trends. Coverage is limited to supported experiences. Queries are a sample; citations do not show placement within an answer or establish page importance. ( Microsoft Bing Webmaster Blog )

Google’s dedicated Search report insights had rolled out to all websites worldwide by August 31, 2026, according to Google’s announcement. That is a rollout date, not a performance or adoption statistic.

Set up a reliable monitoring workflow

  1. Verify both site properties. Use the appropriate verified properties in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Check each property’s scope and how canonical URLs are represented before comparing page rows.
  2. Check Google Search visibility. In Search Console, open the Generative AI performance report. Review pages, countries, dates, and devices, and use the search-type filter where useful. Check the separate generative AI report for Discover. Google’s report dates use Pacific Time.
  3. Check Bing citation activity. In Bing Webmaster Tools, open AI Performance and review citations, average cited pages, page-level activity, sampled grounding queries, and the timeline. Treat the query list as illustrative rather than a complete query log.
  4. Compare pages and trends within each platform. Note which pages appear and how their visibility changes over time. Do not add Google impressions to Bing citations or present the combined total as an AI visibility score.
  5. Investigate changes before drawing conclusions. Check indexing, crawl access, canonical URLs, content availability, report scope, and the applicable time range. A lower number might reflect sampling, reporting limits, a feature change, or a real visibility change; the dashboard alone does not identify the cause.

Understand impressions, citations, and sampled queries

Google reports impressions, not confirmed citations

Google Search Console’s generative AI Search report measures impressions for links shown in supported generative AI Search features. An impression is not proof that a user clicked a link, nor should it be relabeled as a confirmed citation. Google Discover’s generative AI reporting is separate from the Search report.

Bing reports citations, not answer rank

Bing AI Performance counts citations in its supported experiences and provides page-level activity. A citation count does not tell you where a page appeared in an answer or whether it was more important than another cited page. Its grounding queries are sampled, not a full record of every query behind citations.

Keep each platform’s scope attached to its numbers

When documenting results, record the platform, report, covered experience, dates, and metric alongside the figure. Compare like with like: page activity and trends can be useful across dashboards, but their totals have different definitions and aggregation.

How to read trends and reporting gaps

  • Check the time window and delay. Google says recent data may be preliminary; its dates use Pacific Time. Compare equivalent periods and account for reporting recency.
  • Check aggregation and row limits. Google’s chart and table totals can vary with the dimension selected, and standard Search Performance row and time limits apply. A missing row is not, by itself, proof that a page was never shown.
  • Check eligibility and inclusion. Low AI impressions or an exclusion setting can explain an absent result. For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet; Google says no extra AI-specific technical requirement or special structured data is needed. ( Google Search Central: AI Features and Your Website )
  • Check Bing’s sampling and coverage. A small or absent grounding-query sample does not establish that no relevant queries occurred. The report covers supported experiences, not every AI service.

Use Google’s inclusion control deliberately

Search Console provides a Search generative AI control for supported Google Search AI features, including AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI features in Discover. Properties are included by default, subject to property inheritance. Excluding a property removes its eligibility for links and content in those features, so it receives no related impressions or traffic. Google says this setting is not a ranking or inclusion signal for other parts of Search; changes generally take a few days to propagate, and caching can make some content take longer. It does not replace other service participation choices or block every use of site content in Google Search systems. Review the Search generative AI control guidance before changing it.

Use third-party AI visibility tools cautiously

Paid services may help organize monitoring, but a dashboard is only as meaningful as its stated surfaces, sampling method, update cadence, and terms. Google cautions that “No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems.” Treat vendor estimates as supplementary evidence, not access to Google’s internal data. ( Google Search Central guidance )

Bing has also described preview extensions called Intents, Topics, Citation Share, and Compare, intended to add context and relative citation patterns beyond raw counts. Microsoft presented them as preview capabilities in its June 16, 2026 announcement; do not treat them as a stable or universal AI search score. ( Microsoft Bing Search Blog )

What publishers can do to improve eligibility

Monitoring tells you what a report records; it does not guarantee that a page will be cited. Google’s guidance emphasizes ordinary Search fundamentals: make pages crawlable and internally discoverable, provide useful textual content, maintain page experience, and ensure structured data matches visible page content. Google specifies no new AI machine-readable files or special AI schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and states there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for appearing in those features. ( Google Search Central: AI Features and Your Website )

Use dashboard changes as a prompt to investigate, not as a diagnosis. Verify indexability and canonical handling, check whether the relevant feature and period are covered, and then assess the page itself. Neither report establishes why a page was or was not cited.
