Use Google Search Console to track impressions from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Bing Webmaster Tools to inspect citations and sampled grounding queries, and Microsoft Clarity for its documented AI citation and traffic views. These tools measure different things: an impression is not a citation, and neither is a visit or conversion. Keep the metrics separate when assessing whether your content appears in AI-generated answers.

Which tool measures what?

Tool AI surfaces covered What it reports Important limitation
Google Search Console Google AI Overviews and AI Mode Organic impressions, with page, country, date, and device breakdowns Counts impressions, not citation totals or resulting visits. A report may not appear for a property with too little qualifying activity.
Bing Webmaster Tools Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated Bing summaries, and select partner integrations Total citations, average unique cited pages per day, sampled grounding queries, page-level citation counts, and trends Does not indicate ranking, authority, importance, or a page’s role or placement in a particular answer.
Microsoft Clarity AI-generated answer citation activity, as described in Clarity documentation Citation, share-of-authority, query/topic, cited-page, and AI-assistant traffic views Does not measure traditional search rankings, impressions, or click-through rates. Check current account access and metrics.

Coverage and definitions come from the Google Search Console report documentation, Bing AI Performance documentation, and Microsoft Clarity’s citation dashboard overview. They are separate measurement layers, not interchangeable versions of a single AI-visibility score.

How to measure AI Overview and AI Mode impressions in Search Console

Google’s dedicated generative AI performance report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google’s help page says the report had rolled out to websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026, but a property may not show it if it has too little qualifying activity. Search Labs experiments are excluded.

Google defines an impression as a time a link to your site is shown in a generative AI feature. The total is aggregated at the property level unless you filter by URL. You can examine results by page, country, date, and device, with web search type filtering. The newest data may be preliminary, date ranges and report rows have limits, and dates use Pacific Time; preserve those details when comparing exports or matching them to other analytics.

The report does not provide citation counts or causal attribution. Google says AI feature appearances are included in overall Web search traffic reporting; use analytics such as Google Analytics to examine downstream visits, conversions, and time on site separately. See Google’s report help and Google Search Central’s guidance on AI features.

How to track citations in Bing Webmaster Tools

Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report is citation-oriented. Its documented metrics include total citations, average unique cited pages per day, page-level citation counts, trends, and sampled grounding queries—the queries associated with the context for an answer. Treat those query phrases as a sample, not a complete query log. Microsoft introduced the report as a public preview on February 10, 2026; its present availability can depend on the account and product status. The Bing AI Performance help page describes what the report measures.

Microsoft announced additional preview capabilities on June 16, 2026: intent classifications, thematic topic clusters, citation share by grounding query, and period comparison. Citation share is your site’s percentage of citations for a particular grounding query out of all citations shown for that query. It is not traffic share, a ranking, or a view of competitor domains. Intent and topic labels rely on evolving classification systems and can be broad, especially for niche subjects. Details are in the Microsoft Bing Search Blog announcement.

Use a cited URL or query pattern as a diagnostic lead—for example, to review whether a page clearly answers the relevant question and supports its claims. Microsoft’s suggestions about clarity, depth, evidence, and freshness are product guidance, not proof that a particular edit will produce more citations.

What Clarity adds

Clarity documents an AI Visibility Citation dashboard with views for page citations, share of authority, queries and topics, cited pages, and AI-assistant traffic. A domain can be verified through Clarity tracking code or a Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools connection. Its dashboard is distinct from conventional search reporting: it does not measure traditional rankings, impressions, or click-through rates. Because this product area can change, confirm the metrics and access requirements in your Clarity account; see the Clarity Citation Dashboard overview.

A practical workflow for publisher reporting

  1. Define a controlled prompt sample. Record representative questions, target markets, languages, devices, and dates. Manual checks can help examine answers, but they are a sample, not a census of all AI answers or organic activity.
  2. Set up and verify properties. Verify the site in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. If Clarity’s AI Visibility dashboard is relevant, configure access through its available verification route. Confirm property boundaries and URL canonicalization before comparing page data.
  3. Keep metric labels intact. Record Search Console figures as AI-feature impressions; record Bing and Clarity figures using their documented citation or traffic definitions. Track referral sessions and conversions in analytics as separate measures. Do not add impressions, citations, visits, and outcomes into one “AI visibility” total.
  4. Segment and export with context. In Search Console, inspect page, geography, date, and device. In Bing, review cited URLs and sampled grounding queries, then use intent, topic, citation-share, or comparison views if available. Keep the platform, reporting window, aggregation level, and preliminary-data status with each extract.
  5. Compare like with like and log changes. Use comparable date windows and annotate content revisions, seasonality, and known platform updates. Bing notes that citation activity can vary with user behavior, models, freshness, partner refresh cycles, and changes to the web. A trend shows that activity changed; it does not identify a single cause.
  6. Use findings to check fundamentals. Review whether relevant pages are indexable, technically eligible, clear, accurate, and useful. Google’s guidance is to follow ordinary SEO best practices; it does not require special AI-only markup or “GEO hacks.”

How to interpret changes without overstating them

  • Coverage differs: Search Console covers Google AI Overviews and AI Mode; Bing includes Copilot, Bing summaries, and selected partner integrations; Clarity documents AI answer citation activity. A platform comparison is not a controlled comparison of identical surfaces.
  • Counts differ: An impression measures a link shown in a Google generative AI feature. A citation records a page cited in an answer. A referral visit or conversion is a downstream analytics event. Preserve each product’s definition.
  • Granularity differs: Page, country, date, device, query, intent, and topic views vary by tool and may involve sampling or aggregation.
  • Availability differs: Google stated worldwide rollout of its report as of August 31, 2026. Bing’s expanded June 2026 features were announced as previews. Check the product and account rather than assuming every site has every view.
  • Observation is not causation: Official documentation describes appearances and activity; it does not establish that visibility equals authority or traffic share, or that a specific editorial change caused a change in citations.
