In Christopher Pitt’s SitePoint essay, “John” is a caricature of an entitled programmer—not a documented individual or a representative case study. Pitt uses the character to examine conduct he recognized in himself: dismissing colleagues, resisting ordinary collaboration, shifting blame, overstating progress, and assuming another job will always be easy to find. The essay’s useful question is not whether programmers as a group are privileged, but whether you take responsibility for how you work with other people.
What does “programmer privilege” mean here?
The phrase can point to occupational advantages, such as the possibility of high pay, flexible schedules, remote work, or strong demand for programming skills. Those opportunities are not guaranteed to every programmer, and people’s circumstances differ. The SitePoint page raises this broader framing, but it offers no data establishing how common any particular advantage is.
Pitt’s essay uses the idea more narrowly as a prompt for self-examination. Its focus is the assumption that technical ability, comfort, or job mobility entitles someone to disregard colleagues and workplace responsibilities. That is an opinion essay’s argument, not a measured finding about the profession.
Who is John?
John is Pitt’s archetype of a young, self-taught developer raised in comfort. He is not presented as a real person whose experience was studied. Pitt says he recognized aspects of the character’s attitude in himself, turning the story into a personal warning about entitlement rather than a claim that all programmers behave this way.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. - Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The essay’s force comes from familiar workplace moments: a colleague’s question feels like an interruption, a meeting seems beneath you, and a delay is someone else’s fault. The point is not that every programmer exhibits these habits; it is that technical skill does not excuse them when they do occur.
What behaviors does the essay challenge?
Contempt for colleagues
John treats other people’s needs and contributions as less important than his own. Pitt’s criticism is that dismissiveness damages professional relationships and makes collaboration harder, regardless of a person’s coding ability.

Resisting meetings and requests for help
Questions, meetings, and requests for assistance can be part of doing shared work. Treating them automatically as nuisances can prevent teammates from coordinating or getting what they need.
Blaming others and overstating progress
The essay calls out shifting responsibility for delays and claiming more progress than has actually been made. These habits make it harder for a team to understand risks and respond to problems honestly.

Procrastinating while expecting easy mobility
John’s confidence that he can simply find another job can become a reason to neglect the work at hand. Pitt’s warning is that perceived employability should not be used as permission to avoid accountability.
How can you check your own behavior?
Use the essay as a reflection prompt, not as a diagnostic test. Consider specific recent situations rather than deciding whether you are, in general, a “good” or “bad” programmer:

- When a teammate asks for help or clarification, do you respond respectfully and make room for the request?
- When a meeting or task feels inconvenient, do you understand its purpose before dismissing it?
- When work slips, do you state what happened and what remains, or redirect blame?
- Do your progress updates accurately describe completed work and unresolved risks?
- When you procrastinate or make a mistake, do you acknowledge it and take a practical next step?
These questions cannot establish whether you have advantages that others lack; they help examine the conduct Pitt is discussing. A useful response is concrete: be candid about status, follow through on commitments, listen to colleagues, and own your part when something goes wrong.

Christopher Pitt’s “How Privileged Are Programmers? Are You a John, Too?” appeared on SitePoint on April 24, 2017; the page displays an update date of February 29, 2024. It is a personal, normative essay. It reports no study, prevalence estimate, or attributable statistic about programmers’ pay, access, diversity, or workplace behavior. Its examples therefore should not be treated as evidence that these behaviors are widespread or that programmers share the same advantages.

Read its title question as an invitation to reflect on accountability, not as proof of a population-wide pattern. The broader question of unequal access or occupational advantage is distinct from Pitt’s central claim: whatever advantages an individual has, they do not remove the obligation to treat colleagues professionally and take responsibility for their work.
