PossessedHand moves a person’s fingers by applying electrical stimulation to muscles around the forearm. It is a research prototype—not a verified consumer product or a proven medical treatment—and its reported results should be understood in that research context.
How PossessedHand moves the hand
PossessedHand uses a belt of electrode pads to stimulate muscles in the forearm. Those muscles produce movement in the hand and fingers. Rather than mechanically pulling the fingers, the system uses electrical muscle stimulation to cue movement through the person’s muscles.
The University of Tokyo’s Rekimoto Lab describes a version with 28 electrode pads. The system varies stimulation level; the lab says this can target muscles at different depths. Because the relationship between an electrode’s position, stimulation level, and resulting movement differs from person to person, the described system automatically calibrates those relationships.
What the reported experiments showed
The Rekimoto Lab project page says experiments showed PossessedHand could control motion in 16 hand joints. This is a reported experimental result, not a clinical outcome, a user-success rate, or a guarantee that the system would produce reliable movement for everyone.

Two research descriptions, not product options
Separate sources describe different configurations of the research system. They should not be combined into a single specification or read as currently available product choices.

Why the researchers explored music learning
The proposed application was to help beginners learn instrument movements by conveying which fingers to move and when. The Rekimoto Lab page gives learning the koto as an example; the 2010 conference record mentions both piano and koto. A 2023 CHI paper also refers to PossessedHand as an example of electrical muscle stimulation for motor-skill learning, describing support for beginners learning instruments by manipulating wrists and fingers: ACM paper.
