Plexus is an attempt to add Yjs collaboration to an existing class-based TypeScript application without making every model speak Yjs. Its author describes keeping ordinary property and collection syntax at the application layer, while intercepting reads and writes underneath to connect them to reactive, replicated state.
Why preserve a class model instead of switching to Yjs types?
Yjs provides shared data structures such as Y.Map, Y.Array, and Y.Text, along with transactions, events, and encoded updates. The author’s objection is not to those structures; it is to making an established application model depend directly on their types and semantics.
The author says the existing application relied on classes, inheritance, object references, Maps, Sets, arrays, and MobX reactivity across a codebase described as “millions of SLOC.” That scale is the author’s account, not an independently verified measurement. The goal was to add collaborative, local-first behavior without rewriting that model around Yjs primitives.
As the author puts it, “I was not trying to build a CRDT framework.” The design instead tries to make replicated state fit beneath familiar TypeScript class usage.

How does Plexus route ordinary properties into replicated state?
Decorated accessors and initialization
The author describes replacing decorators so getters and setters route property reads and writes through reactive, replicated state. Application code can retain property syntax while the decorated accessors handle the underlying behavior.
Initialization is a tricky part of that arrangement. The described design uses an initializer hook to distinguish class defaults from values supplied by a constructor. Explicit undefined or null, and defaults chained through inheritance, make that distinction more complicated than simply checking whether a value exists.

- TypeScript implements a superset of syntax for strictly typed development, facilitating deep static analysis and enhanced development environment integration. The compiler translates source into standard script formats, ensuring parity across any runtime.
- TypeScript is ideal for front-end developers, full-stack engineers, and software architects who build large-scale web applications. It serves those looking to improve code excellence, reduce bugs through static checking, and maintain complex projects more.

Subclass fields and accessor shadowing
A TypeScript field declaration can have runtime consequences even when its apparent purpose is only to narrow a type. The article explains that a subclass field may initialize to undefined and shadow an inherited accessor, disrupting the synchronized property behavior. The type-level intent does not prevent emitted JavaScript from creating that field.
In relevant cases, the author points to declare as a way to express a type declaration without emitting a runtime field. Plexus’s reported mitigation also walks an instance’s prototype chain and restores property descriptors, helping prevent a subclass field from erasing synchronized accessor behavior. These are implementation details of the design described in the article, not a universal prescription for every class hierarchy.
Mirroring inheritance metadata
The design also mirrors class inheritance in decorator metadata through a prototype chain. That lets metadata for a subclass build on its parent’s schema rather than treating each class as unrelated. Combined with descriptor repair, this is meant to keep inherited properties working with the replication layer.
How do familiar collections work with replicated state?
The author says Plexus supplies collection surfaces that behave like familiar JavaScript Maps while connecting those operations to Yjs. The facade has several jobs:
- Track reads so reactive consumers can respond to changes.
- Translate local writes into Yjs operations.
- Account for collection ownership and references.
- React when changes arrive from remote peers.
The aim is to let application code work with a native-looking collection rather than expose Yjs-specific collection behavior everywhere. The article describes the approach, but does not provide measured performance comparisons or independent validation of its semantics.
Why does Plexus treat Uint8Array differently?
Typed arrays create a separate challenge: a mutable backing buffer can be changed through paths that bypass ordinary property interception. The author describes proxying an ordinary object and reporting Uint8Array.prototype, rather than proxying a real typed array. The stated purpose is to mediate reads and mutations without exposing a backing buffer that could be modified outside synchronization.
Best Value
Keeping that facade aligned with JavaScript’s evolving method surface requires maintenance. The article says Plexus classifies Uint8Array methods as read-only, mutating, or banned, with TypeScript exhaustiveness checks intended to reveal methods that have not been classified. The author reports that this check caught newer base64 and hexadecimal methods. This is a qualitative account, not a benchmark or an independent audit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why are object references a distributed identity problem?
Preserving a field assignment such as text.container = frame across independent peers is more than synchronizing a value. Each peer must be able to represent the same object identity and keep the reference meaningful as replicated state changes.
One alternative is to store an ID and build lookup and lifecycle rules around it. The author contrasts that approach with assigning an object directly, and says the identity problem led to a paper being prepared for arXiv. The available account does not verify a submission or publication.

This is a first-person engineering account of Plexus’s design choices, not an independent product evaluation. The author reports an approach to decorators, inheritance, collection facades, typed-array behavior, and distributed object references. The account supplies no measured comparison, performance figures, or externally verified adoption results.
The author also discloses that the core package was written manually, while tests and some later additions were AI-assisted; examples and auxiliary packages were mostly AI-written and reviewed, and AI helped structure and proofread documentation. That disclosure is the author’s statement and has not been independently audited.
