PlayStation Portal Remote Play lets you play compatible PS5 games on Portal while the games run on your PS5. The console streams video and audio to Portal, and Portal sends your controls back over the network. You need a PS5 connected to the internet, the same PlayStation account on both devices, and Remote Play enabled. Portal does not run games on its own or connect to a PS4.

What you need to use Portal Remote Play

  • A PlayStation Portal Remote Player.
  • A PS5 connected to the internet, with the game you want to play installed.
  • The same PlayStation account signed in on the PS5 and Portal.
  • Remote Play enabled for your user on the PS5.
  • A broadband Wi-Fi connection for Portal and a stable network connection for the console.

PlayStation Plus is not required for Remote Play itself. A particular game may still require a PlayStation Plus membership for its online multiplayer features, as Sony explains in its PlayStation Portal product FAQ.

How to enable Remote Play on your PS5

  1. Connect the PS5 to the internet and sign in to the PlayStation account you will use on Portal.
  2. Install the latest available PS5 system software. Sony recommends keeping the console updated.
  3. On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play for the relevant user.
  4. If you want Portal to wake the console while it is in Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
  5. Complete Portal setup, sign in with the same PlayStation account, and start Remote Play.

Once configured, you can use Remote Play away from home if the networks at both ends provide a suitable connection; Portal and PS5 do not have to be on the same Wi-Fi network. Sony’s setup advice is available in its Remote Play support guide.

What internet speed does Portal need?

Sony’s undated Portal product FAQ, accessed October 7, 2026, states a minimum internet speed of 5 Mbps for Portal use and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are Sony’s service thresholds and recommendation, not a guarantee of smooth play in every home or location. Connection stability and local Wi-Fi conditions matter as well as the stated internet speed.

Where can you use PlayStation Portal?

You can use Portal wherever you have a suitable Wi-Fi connection and the paired PS5 can be reached over the internet. At home, the same network may simplify setup, particularly if the PS5 also uses Wi-Fi. Away from home, connection quality depends on the networks involved, so a public or shared network may not provide a consistent experience. Sony describes Remote Play as a way to control a PS5 remotely “wherever you have a high-speed internet connection.”
