On a Honkai: Star Rail Character Event Warp, a 5-star character is guaranteed within 90 Warps. When one appears, it has a 50% chance to be the featured character; if it is not, your next 5-star on a Character Event Warp is guaranteed to be featured. Starting from zero pity without an active guarantee, the worst-case ceiling is 180 Warps—not the amount every player should expect to use.
How 5-star pity works
Pity is the number of Warps made on a particular banner type since the last 5-star result. On a Character Event Warp, the detailed rates and guarantee rules in the Honkai: Star Rail Wiki’s Warp reference list a 0.6% base rate for a 5-star character and hard pity at 90 Warps: if the previous 89 Warps did not produce a 5-star, the 90th does. The counter resets when a 5-star appears.
That 90-Warp figure is a maximum interval between 5-star results, not a prediction of how many Warps you will need. A 5-star can appear before the guarantee.

What the 50/50 means
When a 5-star appears on a Character Event Warp, there is a 50% chance it will be the featured promotional character. If the result is a non-featured character, your next 5-star character on a Character Event Warp is guaranteed to be the featured character. The detailed chance and guarantee rules are documented in the Warp reference.
Worst-case ceiling for the featured character
If you start at zero pity with no featured guarantee active, the worst case is 90 Warps to get a non-featured 5-star, followed by up to 90 more for the guaranteed featured 5-star: 180 Warps total. This is a ceiling under those starting conditions, not an average or a promise that you will need that many.

What carries over when a Character Event Warp ends
Your 5-star count carries from one Character Event Warp to a later Character Event Warp. If you stop before getting a 5-star, that accumulated count remains. If your last 5-star was non-featured, the featured-character guarantee also carries on the same Warp type, according to the detailed Warp rules reference.
HoYoverse stated in its Version 3.7 Event Warp notice that the cumulative count toward a guaranteed 5-star in any Character Event Warp carries over to other Character Event Warps and is independent of other Warp types.

Character, Light Cone, and Stellar Warps use separate systems
Do not transfer your Character Event Warp pity or guarantee to another Warp type. The official V1.0 Boarding Preparation Special Program Overview distinguishes time-limited Character and Light Cone Event Warps, which use Star Rail Special Passes, from Stellar and Departure Warps, which use Star Rail Passes. Character Event Warp carry-over applies between Character Event Warps; it does not mean the counter carries to a Light Cone Event Warp or a regular Stellar Warp.
Which non-featured characters can appear?
The pool of possible non-featured 5-star characters is subject to in-game configuration. HoYoverse’s Version 4.2 update details describe Celestial Invitation, which lets players select 7 characters from a pool of 13 5-star characters for the customizable non-featured list on Character Event Warp. That version-specific information does not establish that the pool will remain the same indefinitely. Check the active Warp details in-game for the eligible characters.
