Piezoelectricity is a promising way to actuate or harvest energy in microrobotic systems, but it does not make a nanomachine self-powered by itself. In an actuator, electrical input creates mechanical motion; in an energy harvester, mechanical motion produces electrical output. Those are different functions, and neither proves that practical, autonomous medical nanobots are available.

What piezoelectricity does in a microrobot

Piezoelectric materials couple electrical and mechanical behavior. Apply an electrical drive and the material can deform or vibrate; arrange that motion within a device and it can help propel or manipulate a microrobot. Conversely, mechanical movement applied to a piezoelectric material can generate an electrical signal or output. A review of piezoelectric materials in microrobotic systems examines their roles in actuation, energy harvesting, sensing, and control (Micromachines, 2022).

Actuation: electricity in, motion out

A piezoelectric micro-actuator uses an electrical signal to create motion. The robot or actuator still needs a way to supply and control that signal. The 2022 review identifies high-voltage drive electronics and power-supply needs as challenges for piezoelectric micro-actuators. A piezoelectric component therefore does not, on its own, remove the need for external electronics or a power source.

Energy harvesting: motion in, electricity out

In energy harvesting, mechanical movement generates electrical energy. That output could contribute to powering a device, but it must be considered alongside the energy needed for actuation, storage, control electronics, and the conditions under which the robot operates. The available reviews do not establish a complete, self-sufficient nanomachine that powers itself indefinitely.

How piezoelectricity fits among microrobot power approaches

Medical micro/nanorobot research includes several broad approaches. A 2018 review classifies systems used in the animal studies it examined as biohybrid, chemical, or physical. In that particular set of studies, the authors reported 20% biohybrid, 30% chemical, and 50% physical approaches. These percentages describe only the animal-study systems reviewed in that paper—not all microrobot research today.

Approach How it produces or enables movement Examples described in the review
Biohybrid Uses motile organisms as part of the system Motile biological components
Chemical Converts fuels into locomotion Chemically powered systems
Physical Uses external physical inputs Magnetic fields, ultrasound, or light

Piezoelectric actuation belongs within this wider set of electrically driven or mechanically actuated ideas; the sources do not identify it as the dominant approach. The broader classification and its scope come from Soto and Chrostowski’s review of medical micro/nanorobots (Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2018).

What researchers have demonstrated—and what remains unproven

The 2018 review describes laboratory demonstrations of targeted cargo delivery, fluid mixing, and physical manipulation. It also surveys animal-model operations across multiple designs and power sources, including proof-of-concept delivery, retention, biopsy, and other tasks. These examples show research progress in micro/nanorobotics; they do not establish that piezoelectric nanomachines are routine medical treatments.

The same review identifies safety and the complexity of operating inside the body as obstacles to clinical translation. Its authors summarized the state of the field this way: “Although no ‘killer application’ that would catalyze rapid commercialization has yet emerged, recent engineering breakthroughs have led to the successful in vivo operation of medical micro/nanorobots.”

Why a working device is not yet a clinical nanobot

Medical use requires more than making a small robot move. Researchers must address how it is propelled and controlled, whether its materials are suitable, how it behaves alone and in groups, and whether it can be scaled, commercialized, and regulated. A 2025 technology roadmap review identifies challenges spanning propulsion, theory, collective behavior, material design, embodied intelligence, scale-up, commercialization, and regulation (ACS Nano, 2025). For piezoelectric systems specifically, high-voltage drive electronics and power-supply requirements add further engineering constraints.

A 2016 U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission report described piezoelectric nanogenerators as components that could provide self-sustaining power to nanoscale devices (Chapter Five: Nanorobotics). That statement describes a technical possibility, not evidence that self-powered nanomachines are now routine products or established medical devices.
