Phones are compromised in different ways: someone may trick you into sharing a password, take over your mobile number, install spyware, or exploit vulnerable software. This guide explains seven broad attack methods and how to reduce the risks—without treating ordinary glitches as proof that a phone has been hacked.

What “hacked” can mean

A phone compromise is not one specific event. An attacker might gain access to an online account without entering the phone itself, redirect the phone number to another SIM, install monitoring software, or exploit a weakness in the phone’s software or services. The distinction matters because the signs and safest response differ.

The seven categories below are a practical explanation, not an official ranking or a claim about which attacks are most common. In particular, physical access is a meaningful risk to control, but the sources cited here do not establish its prevalence.

Seven ways a phone or its accounts can be compromised

1. Phishing and social engineering

A scammer may impersonate a bank, phone carrier, technology company, coworker, or family member in a text, email, call, or other message. The goal may be to get you to reveal a password or verification code, provide payment details, or install an app or configuration. Apple describes social engineering as relying on impersonation, deception, and manipulation to gain access to personal data (Apple Support: Recognise and avoid social engineering schemes).

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not use a link or phone number in an unexpected message to verify its claims. Contact the organization using a number or website you already know is genuine. Never disclose a password or one-time verification code to an unsolicited caller or message.

2. Malicious or deceptive apps

An app can misuse permissions or seek access to sensitive information. Install apps from sources you trust, and consider whether the permissions requested make sense for the app’s purpose. On Android, Google Play Protect checks apps from Google Play before download and checks apps from other sources for harmful behavior. It may warn you about, deactivate, or remove harmful apps, but that protection is not a guarantee (Google Play Help: Use Google Play Protect).

3. Stalkerware or spyware

Stalkerware is software installed on a phone without the owner’s knowledge that may expose information such as location, calls, messages, photos, and online activity. The Federal Trade Commission notes that this risk can arise in abusive relationships and that taking action on the monitored device may alert the person monitoring it (FTC: Stalkerware—What To Know).

Battery drain, overheating, or other unusual behavior is not proof of spyware; these symptoms have many possible causes. If you suspect monitoring by an abusive person, do not casually inspect, reset, or replace the phone. Use a different, safer device to contact a domestic-violence advocate or other trusted support and consider a technology safety plan. The FTC lists the National Domestic Violence Hotline at thehotline.org, 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), and text START to 88788. If safe and appropriate, preserve evidence before changing the device.

4. SIM swap or phone-number porting

In a SIM swap, a criminal persuades a carrier to move a victim’s phone number to a SIM or device the criminal controls. Calls and text messages—including login codes sent by SMS—may then reach the attacker, who can use them to attempt account takeovers. The FTC warns that “SMS message verification may not stop a SIM swap” (FTC: SIM Swap Scams—How to Protect Yourself).

If your phone suddenly loses service and you suspect an unauthorized SIM change or number port, contact your carrier promptly through a known official channel. Ask about adding an account PIN or password if the carrier offers one. For sensitive accounts, consider an authenticator app or security key instead of SMS where supported, and maintain a recovery method you can access if your phone number is unavailable.

5. Exploiting unpatched software or network services

Mobile operating systems, apps, and network services can contain vulnerabilities. Some attacks depend on a person clicking a malicious link; others may target vulnerable software or a service running in the background. CISA describes mobile-phone threats and advises users to reduce exposure, but this does not mean no-click attacks are a routine explanation for everyday phone problems (CISA: Cyber Threats to Mobile Phones).

Install operating-system and app updates when they are available. Updates can fix security weaknesses as well as bugs; delaying them leaves known flaws unaddressed for longer.

6. Physical access to an unlocked or weakly protected phone

Someone who can use a phone without supervision may be able to view information, change settings, or install monitoring software, depending on the device’s state and protections. Keep control of the device and use a strong screen lock or passcode. The FTC specifically recommends these precautions to help reduce stalkerware risk (FTC: Stalkerware—What To Know).

7. Risky networks and connected accessories

Networks and connected devices deserve care, but connecting to public Wi-Fi does not automatically mean someone can read all of your phone traffic. CISA’s consumer checklist recommends avoiding public Wi-Fi and treats connections as potential points of attack; it is a caution, not evidence that every public hotspot is compromised (CISA: Mobile Device Cybersecurity Checklist for Consumers).

Keep your phone updated, be selective about networks and accessories, and pay attention to prompts asking you to trust a computer, share data, or connect to an unfamiliar device. Do not approve a prompt you do not understand or expect.

What to do if you suspect a compromise

If a message or call seems suspicious

  • Do not click its links, open unexpected attachments, install software, or share passwords and verification codes.
  • Contact the purported organization independently, using contact details from a source you already trust.

If your number or accounts may have been taken over

  1. Contact your mobile carrier through its known official channel if service has stopped or you suspect an unauthorized SIM change or port. Ask the carrier to help restore control of your number.
  2. From a device you believe is safe, change passwords for affected accounts. Prioritize email and financial accounts, then review them for unfamiliar changes or activity.
  3. Where available, replace SMS-based verification on sensitive accounts with an authenticator app or security key, and check that you still have a usable account-recovery option.

If spyware could involve an abusive person

Safety comes first. The FTC warns that removing software, researching help, or making a call near a monitored phone could alert an abuser. Seek help from a separate device and plan carefully before changing or replacing the phone. Contact an advocate if you need help weighing the risks.

If Apple sends a threat notification

Apple’s threat notifications concern suspected individual targeting by mercenary spyware, a distinct and sophisticated category—not routine scams or ordinary phone problems. Apple says the “vast majority of users will never be targeted by such attacks.” A genuine notification can be checked after signing in at account.apple.com. Apple says it will not ask you to click a link, open a file, install an app or profile, or disclose a password or verification code by email or phone. Take a notification seriously and seek expert assistance; Apple points to Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline (Apple Support: About Apple threat notifications and protecting against mercenary spyware). This specialized process is not a general phone malware scan.

Everyday protections and higher-risk options

Baseline protections for most people

  • Keep the operating system and apps updated.
  • Use a strong screen lock and keep physical control of your phone.
  • Install apps from trusted sources and review their permissions.
  • Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication for important accounts.
  • Protect your carrier account with a PIN or password where the carrier offers it.

These steps lower risk but cannot make a phone invulnerable. If you choose a hardware security key, first verify that your important accounts and devices support it and keep a recovery option available. CISA’s 2023 Cyber Safety Review Board report describes hardware-backed FIDO2 multifactor authentication as especially resilient in the organizational incident it reviewed; that finding is not a guarantee against every kind of compromise (CISA Cyber Safety Review Board: Lapsus$ Report).

Lockdown Mode is for a different threat level

Apple’s Lockdown Mode is an optional security setting for the small number of people who may face sophisticated, targeted attacks. It reduces the attack surface by limiting some apps, websites, and features, which can affect normal functionality. It is not a routine requirement for every phone owner (Apple Support: Lockdown Mode security for Apple devices).

How to judge suspicious signs

A strange message, a momentary app crash, battery drain, or overheating does not by itself establish that a phone has been hacked. Start with the event that prompted concern: a message asking for credentials points toward a scam attempt; sudden loss of mobile service may warrant a call to your carrier; suspected monitoring by someone with access to the device calls for a safety-first response. Match the next step to the kind of access at risk rather than assuming every symptom means spyware.
