Phone portrait mode usually creates its blurred background computationally, rather than capturing the same shallow depth of field as a large-aperture camera lens. The software estimates depth, identifies the subject, and renders blur that increases with distance from the focus plane. Some phones use two cameras for depth cues; others can make a depth estimate from one camera. And the rendering is not necessarily a Gaussian blur.
Why portrait mode needs software
Phone cameras generally have small, fixed-size apertures, so more of a scene tends to appear in focus than it would in a camera with a large aperture. Google Research described this trade-off in its 2017 account of the Pixel 2: “Unlike SLR cameras, mobile phone cameras have a small, fixed-size aperture, which produces pictures with everything more or less in focus.” Portrait mode creates the appearance of shallow depth of field by estimating which parts of the image are near the focus plane and selectively softening other regions.
The result can resemble optical background blur, but it is a computational effect: the phone needs an estimate of scene depth and a way to distinguish the subject from the background.
How a phone estimates depth
Two-camera parallax
One approach compares views from two cameras. Because the cameras see the scene from slightly different positions, a feature appears at different locations in each image. Software matches features between the views and uses their offset to estimate distance through triangulation. As Google Research explains for the Pixel 2’s dual-camera method, “The position in the two images where this match is found gives the depth of that scene feature through a process of triangulation.”

Apple described a related, device-specific approach for iPhone 7 Plus at WWDC 2017: the system used images from both the wide and telephoto cameras to generate a shallow-depth-of-field effect. That example does not mean every phone portrait mode uses two separate cameras.
Depth from one camera
A phone can also estimate depth using a single camera. In Google’s Pixel 2 example, the phase-detect autofocus sensor—also called dual-pixel autofocus—captures slightly different views through the left and right halves of the same tiny lens. Those viewpoints are less than a millimeter apart, providing a small parallax cue. Google combined that information with person segmentation to make the portrait effect.

A 2018 Google Research paper, “Synthetic Depth-of-Field with a Single-Camera Mobile Phone,” reported that its system processed a 5.4-megapixel image in four seconds on a mobile phone. That is a result for the paper’s system, not a benchmark for current phones.
How the depth map becomes blur
After estimating depth, the software uses it to decide how much to blur different regions. Subject segmentation helps keep the person or other intended subject relatively sharp, while depth information guides the falloff into the background. The depth map is an estimate used to control the effect, not a perfect measurement of every pixel’s distance.

Google’s Pixel 2 and Pixel 4 descriptions explain rendering with translucent disks whose sizes vary according to depth, composited in depth order. This offers a useful picture of how software can approximate the appearance of out-of-focus points of light. It does not establish that all phones use that technique, and it is not accurate to call the rendering universally a Gaussian blur. Software can vary the shape and character of the simulated blur.

Because the effect depends on estimated depth and segmentation, boundaries are challenging. Fine hair, transparent objects, overlapping subjects, and objects near the subject can be assigned to the wrong region, leaving a halo or an unexpectedly sharp or blurred patch. These are consequences of making pixel-level estimates, not proof that every portrait mode fails in the same way.

Google documented one motion-handling case in the Pixel 2 account in which some pixels stayed sharp when they should have been blurred. It is an example of a limitation, not a quantified failure rate across phones. Computational blur can look convincing, but it is not identical to the optical blur produced by a lens.
