To avoid generic-looking AI website designs, give the system a detailed brief, set a visual direction, and approve key decisions before asking it to build or extend pages. In a Beaver Builder masterclass article published by Leah Finch on September 11, 2026, web designer Paul Lacey describes a workflow that uses Claude for research and design exploration, then carries approved pages and rules into Beaver Builder AI Design Kits. The method is his demonstrated approach, not an independently validated standard.
What “AI slop” means in web design
Here, “AI slop” is an editorial label for output that may look polished at first glance but lacks choices tied to a particular business, audience, or purpose. It is not a formal technical category, and the source does not establish how common the problem is.
Lacey points to recurring visual devices such as eyebrow labels, monospace captions, dramatic three-part slogans, gradients, glass effects, translucent cards, and nested boxes. None is inherently wrong. They feel generic when repeated without a reason or a connection to the brief.

The underlying issue is unmade decisions. As Lacey puts it, “If you don’t decide, the AI decides for you.”

How much creative direction should you give AI before it starts designing a website?
Give it enough context to make fewer consequential guesses. Lacey’s approach begins with a detailed brief, not a loose instruction to make a modern website. Include the business and audience, goals, content needs, creative direction, imagery, and constraints. Provide available client materials such as brand guidelines, wireframes, approved copy, and reference sites the client likes or dislikes.
Next, Lacey describes using Claude to research the market, review relevant sites, and find imagery before proposing visual directions. These steps give the designer material to assess; they do not replace the designer’s judgment about what fits the client.
“Designing with AI is not a switch that you just flip,” Lacey says. The point is not to write the longest possible prompt, but to define what matters before asking AI to make choices.

In Lacey’s workflow, a human designer retains approval over the creative direction and the system that will govern the site. Before letting AI proceed, review the visual direction and style tiles, then check typography, colors, imagery, and the design system. These decisions affect the identity and consistency of every page, so the workflow treats them as approval gates rather than details to accept automatically.

Only after those choices are approved does the process move from exploration into building. The designer then reviews the homepage before allowing the system to extend the approach to additional pages. This sequence reduces the chance of scaling an unsuitable direction across a whole site.
How can web designers train AI to follow their own design style?
Lacey describes a custom Claude Skill as a reusable set of process instructions: it explains how Claude should work. He refined his Skill by reviewing briefs, finished websites, and decisions he had challenged. The Beaver Builder article reports that this review covered 24 websites; that is an account of Lacey’s process, not a controlled evaluation or proof that the method produces a particular result.

For designers adapting the idea, the useful distinction is between instructions about process and approved design material. A Skill can capture repeatable steps and preferences, while the actual project brief still supplies the context for a particular client. Reuse should not mean treating every client as if they had the same needs.
How do you turn an AI-generated design into a reusable Beaver Builder design system?
Once the direction and pages have been approved, Lacey’s workflow packages the work as a Beaver Builder AI Design Kit. The article describes the Kit as an importable ZIP package for an editable WordPress site. It can carry approved pages, saved rows, global layouts, brand guidance, assets, and rules into Beaver Builder.
The two components have different roles: the Claude Skill describes how Claude should work; the Design Kit carries approved pages, assets, and design rules into Beaver Builder. After building the homepage and extending the system to other pages, the workflow includes checking consistency and accessibility before packaging the result.

The method comes from a vendor-published Beaver Builder article about Lacey’s masterclass. It is useful as a concrete account of one designer’s process, but it does not establish that the workflow is superior to alternatives.
