Path traversal can expose files on a mail server when software uses externally supplied input to build a file path but fails to keep the resolved path inside its intended directory. Depending on the vulnerable operation and the service’s permissions, the result may be unauthorized file reading, writing, deletion, or further compromise—not necessarily access to mail contents.

How path traversal works

A mail application may take a filename, request parameter, or command value and combine it with a directory it is supposed to use. If the application checks the input before resolving it, special path elements such as .. or path separators can make the final path escape that directory. The weakness is therefore a failed boundary check after path resolution, not simply the presence of a suspicious character. MITRE describes this class of flaw as CWE-22, or improper limitation of a pathname to a restricted directory: MITRE CWE-22.

Mail-related entry points include webmail request parameters, IMAP commands, and attachment filenames handled by a mail-processing library. What an attacker can do depends on the specific code path: a read operation might disclose files, while a write operation might alter or create them. The service process’s filesystem permissions also limit what is reachable.

Documented mail-related examples

These cases share a path-boundary failure, but differ in the affected component, access required, and operation. Historical reports demonstrate the vulnerability class; they do not establish that a product is currently exposed.

Case Entry point and access Reported impact
ArGoSoft Mail Server Pro 1.8, CVE-2006-0930 Webmail UIDL parameter; authenticated remote users Arbitrary file reading via .., according to NVD’s record.
SPA-PRO Mail @Solomon 4.00, CVE-2005-1902 IMAP SELECT, CREATE, DELETE, and RENAME commands; authenticated remote users Reading other users’ mail and operating on arbitrary directories via .. sequences, according to NVD’s record.
Fortinet FortiMail, CVE-2026-104286 Crafted HTTP or HTTPS requests; unauthenticated path traversal, as described by NVD’s record Arbitrary file writing on the underlying system. This report is evidence of a write impact, not file reading. NVD displays a Fortinet CNA-contributed CVSS 3.1 score of 9.8, Critical; this is not an independent NIST assessment. NVD presents affected-version information inconsistently between its configuration and affected-product sections, so consult Fortinet’s current advisory for version boundaries and remediation.
Webklex php-imap attachment saving, GHSA-47p7-xfcc-4pv9 Attachment filenames used by applications saving attachments The project’s GitHub advisory says unsanitized filenames can enable traversal and possible remote code execution with affected saving patterns. It lists versions before 5.3.0 as affected and 5.3.0 or later as patched. This is a library used in mail processing, not a mail-server daemon.

How traversal can affect mail and files

Whether traversal exposes another user’s mailbox depends on what the vulnerable code reads and which paths the service can reach. The SPA-PRO report specifically describes reading other users’ mail; the ArGoSoft report describes arbitrary file reading. Those findings should not be generalized to every traversal flaw.

Traversal in a file-writing path has a different consequence. The FortiMail record describes arbitrary file writing, while the php-imap advisory describes possible remote code execution under certain attachment-saving patterns. A write flaw may create a route to further compromise, but the outcome depends on the application’s behavior and system permissions. Read, write, delete, and execution impacts should be taken from the specific product advisory rather than inferred from the term “path traversal.”

How to prevent path traversal in mail software

  • Decode and canonicalize before validating. Convert input to the application’s canonical representation, avoid double decoding, resolve the path, and then verify the resolved target remains within the permitted directory. MITRE’s CWE-22 guidance explains why validating a path before normalization can miss escapes.
  • Prefer constrained identifiers over paths. Where practical, accept a mailbox or attachment identifier and map it server-side to a fixed set of allowed filenames instead of accepting a user-supplied path.
  • Use allowlists, not only character denylists. Removing a string such as ../ can leave another dangerous sequence behind. Filtering only forward slashes can also fail on systems where backslashes act as separators.
  • Limit service-account permissions. Restrict the mail service’s filesystem access to the directories and operations it needs. This reduces what a path-handling failure can expose or modify.
  • Patch the affected component. Identify the exact server, library, and version; consult its vendor’s current security advisory; and apply the vendor’s patch or mitigation instructions. An input filter or web application firewall may provide defense in depth, but does not by itself correct flawed path handling.

What operators should verify after an advisory

  1. Identify the component and version. Check whether the issue concerns the mail server, webmail interface, or a library that saves attachments; these are distinct attack surfaces.
  2. Read the vendor advisory for the exact product. Confirm affected versions and prescribed fixes there. For FortiMail CVE-2026-104286, NVD’s version presentation differs across sections, so use Fortinet’s current advisory rather than relying on one NVD range.
  3. Apply the patch or mitigation, then review exposure. Determine which operations and directories the affected component could access, and whether its service account had permissions beyond what it requires.
  4. Do not treat filtering as the complete fix. Verify that path resolution and the directory-boundary check are correct in the underlying application or library.
