An optical atomic clock turns a very fast laser signal into an electronic timing signal with a frequency comb: the comb links the laser’s optical frequency to lower microwave or radio frequencies that electronics can count. This clockwork can be built in different ways, from chip-scale rubidium prototypes to rack-sized systems demonstrated outside conventional optical-table laboratories. Compact packaging is possible, but it does not mean every clock is fully integrated or ready for routine commercial deployment.

How does a frequency comb connect an optical clock to electronics?

An optical atomic clock stabilizes a laser to a narrow atomic transition. The laser oscillates at an optical frequency, much too fast for ordinary electronic counters to count directly. A frequency comb provides a set of evenly spaced, phase-coherent optical frequencies—a ruler that links the optical reference to the microwave domain.

As NIST explains, the comb’s teeth act like the gears of a clock: they connect faster optical frequencies to the lower-frequency microwave signals used by electronics and current atomic clocks. In practical terms, the chain is:

  1. Atomic transition: An atom or molecule provides the reference frequency.
  2. Stabilized clock laser: The laser is locked to that reference.
  3. Frequency comb: Comb teeth provide a coherent link from the optical signal down to microwave frequencies.
  4. Photodetector and electronics: The converted signal is detected and handled as an electronic clock output.

NIST’s femtosecond-comb program describes a phase-coherent link between an optical reference near 500 THz and the microwave domain. It reports demonstrated comb-clockwork fidelity below 1 part in 1019. That is a result for the comb link, not a claim that every complete clock has that accuracy.

What makes an optical clock smaller than a laboratory system?

Miniaturization means integrating or shrinking components that would otherwise occupy a large optical-table setup: the optics, comb, atomic reference, detectors, and control electronics. The examples below use different species and comb designs, so they show several engineering routes rather than one standardized clock architecture.

Implementation Reference and comb Reported performance Packaging and integration
Chip-scale rubidium clock Rubidium-87 two-photon transition in a thermal vapor cell; two Kerr-microresonator optical-frequency combs Instability of 1.7×10−13 at 4,000 seconds, reported by NIST in 2019 Described by NIST as low-power and chip-scale; package volume, power figure, and environmental robustness are not stated in the cited 2019 description.
Integrated strontium direction Strontium optical-lattice clock; small combs from Octave Photonics stabilize the readout laser Performance characterization is ongoing, according to NIST; a completed clock’s accuracy or instability is not stated. NIST describes a package roughly one-thousandth the size of the record-setting JILA laboratory version and only a few inches on a side, excluding the lasers. Vector Atomic assembled the final package; integrated photonics and metasurface optics are part of the design.
Field/rack implementation Molecular iodine spectrometer, fibre frequency comb, and control electronics Clock performance figures are not stated in the cited Nature report. The 2024 Nature paper “Optical clocks at sea” reports a 35-litre clock consuming less than 100 W. It demonstrates packaging for operation beyond a conventional optical-table laboratory; the cited figures do not establish performance in every field environment.

The architectures should not be conflated. The rubidium example uses Kerr microresonators; the sea-going system uses a fibre comb; the strontium package uses small combs to stabilize its readout laser. The evidence does not establish that one comb type is universally smaller, more robust, or more accurate than the others.

Does a smaller package mean an optical clock is ready for field use?

Not by itself. A package dimension or volume says how much space an implementation occupies; it does not establish its accuracy, stability, ability to withstand vibration or temperature changes, or how much supporting equipment it needs. NIST’s strontium package excludes the lasers, and its performance characterization is ongoing. The iodine clock’s volume and power figures demonstrate a rack-scale implementation, but do not provide a general environmental qualification for all optical clocks.

There is also a distinction between clock performance measures. Instability describes how the clock’s frequency varies over a stated averaging time; accuracy concerns how closely its frequency agrees with the defined reference. NIST’s 2013 review said optical-clock precision was approaching a few parts in 1018, but that broad state-of-the-art context should not be assigned to the specific compact examples in the table.
