Open-source software may be free to use, but maintaining it takes paid work, volunteer time, infrastructure, and administration. Projects cover those costs through a mix of individual and company sponsorships, employer contributions, grants, fiscal hosts, pooled ecosystem funds, and paid support. No single model fits every project: the right choice depends on whether funding is dependable, reaches routine maintenance, and suits the project’s users and governance.

How are open-source projects funded?

There is no single funding mechanism—or reliable universal figure for how many projects receive funding. Some money goes directly to maintainers; other support arrives as staff time, infrastructure, or funds administered by an organization. These forms of support are not interchangeable.

Individual and company sponsorships

Platforms such as GitHub Sponsors let individuals and organizations fund enrolled maintainers and projects. GitHub describes features for discovering dependencies, sponsoring in bulk, and paying by invoice. In July 2026, GitHub said more than 70,000 maintainers and organizations had been supported, with more than 280,000 sponsors. Its announcement also reported that more than $100 million had been invested through GitHub Sponsors cumulatively. These are platform-specific milestones, not a measure of all open-source funding.

Historical figures in the same announcement show why organizational sponsorship can matter: in 2022, nearly 40% of sponsorship funding on GitHub came from organizations, and an organization-funded sponsorship averaged nearly 15 times an individual sponsorship. Those comparisons describe GitHub’s 2022 activity, not current sponsorship averages across the sector.

Fiscal hosting and pooled donations

A fiscal host can receive and administer contributions for projects that do not want to manage that infrastructure alone. Open Source Collective reports on its finances and member projects. Its 2024 board report says it received approximately $12.5 million in project contributions and paid out $9.7 million to maintainers during 2024, with nearly 80% of incoming project funds paid out that year. These are the Collective’s own figures, not industry totals. Its 2026 update describes more than 2,600 member projects and over $20 million moved annually; that scale description has a different scope from the 2024 operating figures.

Pooled funding can also target less-visible components that many projects depend on. Open Source Collective’s Ecosystem Funds update describes directing contributions toward important parts of broader dependency ecosystems, rather than only projects that users recognize as direct dependencies.

Employer time and in-kind contributions

Some maintainers do open-source work as part of a paid job, and organizations may contribute employee hours, infrastructure, or other resources. The Linux Foundation’s 2024 funding report estimates that organizations invest $7.7 billion per year in open source, with most of the value coming from labor. It is an estimate of organizational investment, not a cash pool paid to individual maintainers. The report also notes that many survey respondents struggled to quantify labor hours or the share of budgets allocated to open source.

Grants

Foundations, industry groups, and public programs may fund a defined security, maintenance, or development project. A grant can pay for a concrete piece of work, but a one-time award does not by itself create recurring income or fund the work after the grant ends.

Paid support, consulting, and requested development

A project or company can sell support, consulting, or development work around open software. The Linux Foundation’s Open Source Maintainers 2023 report describes cURL client work as a revenue source for maintenance and identifies paid support and dependency models as options for unaffiliated projects. This approach can connect revenue to user needs, but paid engagements need not cover every part of a project’s maintenance.

What do the headline funding figures actually measure?

Published totals describe different populations, time periods, and types of support. They should not be added together or treated as estimates of typical maintainer income.

  1. List the work to be funded. Include recurring tasks such as reviewing contributions, responding to issues, releasing updates, fixing vulnerabilities, supporting users, maintaining build and distribution systems, and project administration—not only new features.
  2. Separate recurring needs from defined projects. Regular maintenance calls for dependable income where possible; a one-time grant may be better suited to a bounded security or development effort.
  3. Choose a collection route. Consider direct sponsorship if the project can enroll and manage it, fiscal hosting if you need help administering contributions, grants for specific work, or paid support and consulting if users need those services. Employer support may contribute labor or infrastructure rather than cash to the project.
  4. Check the administrative fit. Compare who handles tax, legal, and payment administration with the project’s governance and available time. Confirm current platform or host terms directly, since conditions can change.
  5. Explain how support will be used. Make the maintenance need and the intended use of funds clear to potential sponsors, users, or grantmakers. Do not imply that a one-time award guarantees long-term coverage.

How can individuals and companies support maintainers?

For individual supporters

  • Look first at the project’s own sponsorship, donation, or fiscal-hosting instructions; use a platform only if the project is enrolled and accepts support there.
  • When the project offers several choices, consider whether your contribution is recurring or one-time and whether it goes to the project, a host, or a specific maintainer.

For organizations

  • Identify critical dependencies and the people or organizations maintaining them. A direct dependency is visible in an application, but important components deeper in its dependency chain may be easier to overlook.
  • Budget employee time and infrastructure contributions as well as cash sponsorships; not all organizational support is a payment to an individual maintainer.
  • Consider pooled support for underlying ecosystem infrastructure alongside direct support for dependencies your teams rely on.
  • Use administrative options such as bulk sponsorship or invoiced payments when they suit the organization’s purchasing process, and verify the platform’s current terms.

How should a project choose a funding model?

Compare each option against the project’s actual maintenance needs instead of treating one approach as universally best.

Model Useful when Key question
Individual or company sponsorship Users and organizations want to support a project directly, and it can accept sponsorships. Will the support recur, and does it reach the work that needs time?
Fiscal hosting or pooled donations The project needs a way to receive and administer contributions or wants support directed to shared ecosystem components. Who administers the funds, and how are they allocated?
Employer or in-kind support A maintainer’s employer or another organization can contribute staff time, infrastructure, or related resources. Which work and resources are actually covered, and for how long?
Grant A specific security, maintenance, or development effort has a suitable funder. What happens to the work when the award ends?
Paid support or consulting Users need help, advice, or requested development that can be offered as a service. Will service commitments leave enough capacity for other maintenance?

A workable funding plan may combine approaches: for example, employer-supported time for core maintenance, sponsorship for broader community work, and a grant for a defined security project. Judge the combination by whether it covers routine upkeep as well as planned development, how predictable it is, and whether its administrative burden is manageable.
