Bob Kim says his devpick.sh site ships 118 browser-based developer tools from one Next.js application, exported as static files and deployed to Cloudflare Pages. The approach is a route-per-tool convention rather than a shared tool framework: it keeps each tool distinct while centralizing build checks and shared page elements. Here is how the setup works, what it does—and does not—establish, and when static export is a good fit.

How the 118-tool application is organized

Kim describes one route folder per tool, with a page such as app/<tool-name>/page.tsx and, when needed, a separate client component for interactive behavior. Each page supplies its own metadata, while tool logic runs client-side. Examples he gives include a JSON formatter, cron explainer, subnet calculator, and UTM builder.

He chose not to create a common tool framework because the utilities differ. The convention provides consistency in where routes live without requiring every tool to use the same implementation abstraction. For a growing collection, that is a practical distinction: standardize the page boundary and shared shell, but leave the tool-specific interface and logic free to vary.

What happens during the build

Kim reports this build chain: next build && next-sitemap && npm run audit:seo. In his workflow, the SEO audit is not merely a report: a failed check exits non-zero and blocks deployment.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Build-time checks

The custom audit checks that each page has a title and that titles are unique, that a description exists and is under about 160 characters, that a canonical URL is present, and that breadcrumb JSON-LD is valid. Kim gives a changed UTM-builder description as an example of a regression the check caught. The character threshold and checks are his implementation details, not a universal search-engine rule.

Sitemap and structured data

He says next-sitemap derives the sitemap from the route tree, producing 118 sitemap URLs rather than relying on a manually maintained list. A shared ToolLayout emits WebApplication JSON-LD and BreadcrumbList data. These mechanisms reduce repeated page setup and route-list upkeep; the account does not demonstrate that they improve search rankings.

Why static export fits—and where it stops

Next.js’s documented static-export workflow is to set output: 'export' in the Next.js configuration and run next build. The build emits static files in out by default, which can be served by a web server capable of serving HTML, CSS, and JavaScript assets. See the official Next.js static exports guide.

That makes the model suitable when tool behavior can run in the browser and the site does not depend on request-time server logic. Static export does not support features that require a Node server or dynamic request handling. Next.js lists limitations including API routes, rewrites, redirects, headers, middleware, incremental static regeneration, draft mode, default image optimization, and server-side rendering features. Check the current support list against the exact features the application needs before adopting the architecture.

How the author handles analytics and shareable state

Kim says his Google Analytics events include page views and tool outcomes labeled completed or errored, with simple scalar parameters. He says the payload excludes user inputs, filenames, and generated outputs. That is his stated data-minimization policy; the account is not an independent audit of what reaches analytics or other services.

He also says tool state has recently begun syncing to the URL query string, starting with the UTM builder. That lets a user share a configured state through a link. His retrospective lesson is to consider shareable state early, rather than treating it as an afterthought. Whether a given tool should encode state in a URL depends on what that state contains and whether sharing it is useful.

The MCP extension is an experiment, not proof of demand

Kim says 43 tools have been wrapped as MCP tools. He describes demand as unproven and says he may remove the MCP server if it becomes stale. That figure describes the current scope of his integration, not validated adoption or evidence that MCP support is worthwhile for every browser utility.

Build speed, framework choice, and hosting cost

Kim reports that building 118 pages takes “a few minutes,” but supplies no controlled benchmark. He chose Next.js because it was familiar and helped him ship quickly; he suggests Astro might be lighter, but offers no comparative test. For another project, framework choice should turn on team familiarity, route-level metadata needs, static-export compatibility, actual build times at the expected scale, and the available content tooling. Measure alternatives on the project rather than treating relative weight or speed as established.

Kim describes the site as having “No backend, no database, hosting costs about $0.” The hosting-cost figure is his self-reported account, not an independently verified bill or a guarantee that static hosting is free for every project. He also says the repository is MIT-licensed and invites contributions.

When this architecture is a sensible fit

  • Good fit: Each utility can run in the browser, pages can be generated at build time, and the project benefits from static hosting.
  • Use a different architecture or add a backend: A tool requires protected secrets, server-side computation, persistent user data, or another feature unavailable in static-export mode.
  • Before committing: Verify that the host serves the generated assets and route paths as expected, handles 404s appropriately, and supports the required domain and cache behavior. Confirm that the build automation and any paid tier match actual needs.

The value of Kim’s setup is its operational pattern: individual tool routes, a shared layout for common output, generated sitemap coverage, and deployment-blocking checks. It is a first-person architecture example, not a code audit or evidence that the same build time, cost, or search results will hold for another site.
