To find out how old your Dell computer is, look up its Service Tag on Dell Support and check whether the device details show a build date or shipped date. Those dates are tied to the individual computer; a model name identifies a product family, and a warranty expiration date is not the computer’s manufacture date.

Find your Dell computer’s Service Tag

The Service Tag is the key to Dell’s device-specific support lookup. Dell describes it as a seven-character alphanumeric code; the Express Service Code is its numeric conversion. See Dell’s Service Tag and serial number locator for device-specific guidance.

Check the computer itself or its firmware

Look for the Service Tag label on the computer. On a laptop, it may be on the bottom cover. If the label is missing or hard to read, check BIOS/UEFI for the tag. Dell’s laptop Service Tag instructions also describe digital ways to retrieve it.

Retrieve the tag in Windows or Linux

  • SupportAssist: Open Dell SupportAssist; the Service Tag appears in the application’s device information.
  • Windows Command Prompt: Dell documents the command wmic bios get serialnumber. WMIC is disabled by default in Windows 11 24H2 and newer, so this command may not work there.
  • PowerShell: Use the PowerShell method in Dell’s Service Tag instructions if WMIC is unavailable.
  • Ubuntu or Linux: Dell’s laptop guidance includes a Terminal method for retrieving the tag.

For desktops, Dell also lists the back panel, BIOS/UEFI, Command Prompt, PowerShell, and SupportAssist as places or methods to find the Service Tag. The Dell locator covers those options.

Look up the tag and check for a date

  1. Go to Dell Support and enter the computer’s Service Tag.
  2. Open the device-specific support details and look for a shipped date or build date.
  3. If a date is shown, compare it with today’s date to estimate how much time has elapsed. Keep the label attached to the date: a build date is when the computer was made, while a shipped date is when it was dispatched.

Dell’s official warranty guidance confirms that a Service Tag lookup can show warranty status and expiration, but does not promise that every product record displays a build or shipped date. A Dell-FAQ moderator’s age-check instructions, updated May 2, 2025, say those dates may appear in support details. Their availability can vary, so an absent date does not mean the tag or lookup is wrong.

If Dell Support does not show a build or ship date

Check the original order confirmation, receipt, or seller records for the purchase date. Those records establish when the computer was bought, not when it was manufactured or first used. Describe that result as the computer’s purchase age rather than its manufacture age.

A shipping box can help identify the model or Service Tag, but its label is not necessarily a manufacture-date record. Dell’s model-identification guidance explains how to find a Dell model and tag. The model tells you which product or family you have; it does not give the build date of your particular unit.

Why warranty expiration does not tell you the computer’s age

Dell Support can show warranty status and expiration when you look up a Service Tag. Expiration is not the same as a build date: warranty terms and registration or ownership history can affect the dates shown. Use warranty information to understand coverage, not as a substitute for a device-specific build or shipped date. Dell’s warranty-status article also notes that warranty details and renewal options may depend on country.
