There is no single best interval for every forest sensor. Set how often a node records a measurement according to how quickly that variable changes and what the study or alert must capture. Set how often it transmits separately, based on latency, connectivity, storage, and power. A sensor can record frequently, retain readings locally, and send them in batches when immediate delivery is not required.
Sampling and transmission are different settings
Sampling is how often the sensor measures and records a value. Transmission is how often the node sends recorded data to another system. They do not have to happen at the same cadence: a node may log locally at short intervals and upload periodically, if it has enough storage and the application can tolerate the delay.
Choose the sampling interval to preserve the time detail needed for analysis. Choose the transmission interval to meet alert and data-access needs without wasting energy or relying on a radio link that may be unavailable. For a near-real-time warning, delay may be unacceptable; for a long-term study, buffered transfer may be practical. The climate-smart forestry review describes continuous in-situ monitoring and early-warning applications, while long-term ecosystem programmes prioritize durable records (Torresan et al., 2021; WSL, Data flow).

Different measurements change at different rates. Fraunhofer’s forest-network example distinguishes soil moisture, which may change slowly and be measured less often, from air temperature, which can vary more quickly (Fraunhofer, 2011). A single interval for all sensors can therefore either collect unnecessary readings for slow processes or miss short-term variation in faster ones.
#1 Best Overall
Ask what changes you need to detect and how much variation between measurements you can afford to miss. If the objective includes short-lived events or detailed process analysis, retain finer temporal resolution. If the variable and decision tolerate slower updates, a less frequent measurement may be adequate. The cited examples do not establish a universal optimal interval or a numeric prescription for forest sensors.
Use published cadences as examples, not prescriptions
WSL reports that its Long-term Forest Ecosystem Research programme collects readings from every minute to every hour, with a reported total of 25 million readings per year. Those figures describe that programme, not a recommended cadence for every forest, variable, or instrument (WSL, Data flow).
The right interval depends on the variable, study purpose, required temporal resolution, acceptable alert delay, power budget, maintenance access, connectivity, buffering, and how raw data will be processed. There is no controlled head-to-head cadence comparison in the cited sources that would justify declaring one configuration best across sites.

Choose a transmission schedule around latency and power
For every measurement, decide whether the application needs it immediately, periodically, or only after temporary local storage. More frequent radio use can increase energy demand; buffering readings and sending them in batches may reduce radio activity when the link and application permit it. The node must have enough storage for the time it may be offline, and the data must still arrive before the decision deadline.
In Fraunhofer’s described deployment, transmission required the most energy, nodes spent most of their time in a low-power sleep state, and calculating values on the node reduced the amount sent. Fraunhofer reported 12 months of operating time for that battery-powered system in its 2011 Göttingen forest deployment; that is a historical, system-specific result, not a general battery-life expectation (Fraunhofer, 2011).
Local summaries can lower transmitted volume, but they are not a substitute for raw observations when the research objective depends on fine-grained records. Make that choice before deployment and document what is retained locally, what is transmitted, and whether summaries can be recomputed later.

Plan for energy, connectivity, and field maintenance
Estimate the complete energy budget rather than considering only the sensor’s measurement interval. Account for sensing, on-node processing, radio use, sleep periods, battery replacement access, and any energy harvesting. A remote node that is expensive or difficult to reach may need a more conservative communications schedule, but not at the cost of missing measurements the study requires.

That observation applies to that system and setting; it does not establish that solar power is unsuitable at every forest site or for current equipment (Fraunhofer, 2011).

For an environmental data logger or sensor node, verify that it can store readings during outages, preserve timestamps, and recover or report failed transfers. A communications plan that works only while a link is continuously available is a poor fit for a site with intermittent coverage.

Long-running monitoring is useful only if later users can understand and assess the data. Retain raw observations when needed, and record the sampling and transmission settings, timestamps, units, sensor locations, maintenance, and any transformations. Include missing readings and outages in quality checks rather than treating gaps as ordinary values.
Streaming sensor data pose QA/QC challenges, while WSL describes raw-data security and quality control as part of its data flow (Campbell et al., 2013; WSL, Data flow). After deployment, check for missingness, timestamp errors, sensor drift, communication outages, and suspicious values before using summaries for management or analysis.
Do not confuse annual reporting with sensor cadence
Commission Regulation (EC) No 1737/2006 gives an example of an administrative schedule: Member States forward data collected during the preceding year for each Level I point by 15 December each year. That deadline concerns reporting under the specified EU programme, not how often a field sensor should measure or transmit. Check the regulation’s current applicability before relying on it for a legal obligation (Commission Regulation (EC) No 1737/2006).
