NHL teams choose a starting goalie by balancing who gives them the best chance to win that night with health, rest, travel, schedule congestion, workload and the other goalie’s readiness. There is no league-wide rotation formula: coaches make a game-by-game decision, and managing workload includes practice and recovery—not just counting starts.
How a team chooses its starting goalie
The goalie coach assesses the goalies’ physical health and mental state, then recommends a plan. The head coach makes the deployment decision. In weighing the options, teams consider both immediate game needs and the demands placed on each goalie.
- Performance and team situation: Recent play and the importance of the game can favor one goalie, but they are weighed against the cost of another start.
- Health and recovery: The time since a goalie last played and their physical and mental condition matter.
- Schedule and travel: Congested stretches, travel, and the timing of arrivals can affect who is ready to play.
- Opponent and alternative: The matchup may shape the choice, as may the backup’s readiness and the expected performance gap between the two goalies.
These are decision factors, not a published scoring system. No universal starts target or mandatory rest interval is established in the cited NHL reporting.
Why teams often split back-to-back games
Using different goalies on consecutive nights is common, especially when a team has a capable tandem. Dave Hakstol, then head coach of the Seattle Kraken, said in a 2022 NHL.com explainer, “Typically you’re going to have a split on the back-to-backs.” Which goalie starts first can depend on the opponent and how long each goalie has rested.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The choice is a trade-off: a team compares the expected cost of asking one goalie to play twice with the difference in ability between its two options. A strong second goalie makes a split more attractive; a meaningful matchup or performance advantage may influence the order.
A Seattle Kraken article summarized Eric Tulsky’s 2013 analysis as finding that a goalie playing both nights of a back-to-back saw save percentage fall by just over 11 percent. The same 2022 article noted that later analyses by SportsMEDIA Technology’s Andrew Thomas and The Athletic’s Dom Luszczyszyn suggested the effect might be smaller. The reported figure is therefore not a settled estimate of what will happen in every back-to-back.

What workload management includes
Workload management means planning a goalie’s total demands, not simply limiting the number of games. NHL.com reporting describes several ways teams approach it:
- Start planning: Account for recent starts, health, travel, schedule congestion and the team’s needs.
- Full nights off: A goalie may not dress as the backup. Ottawa coach Travis Green described giving Linus Ullmark a complete night off during a demanding run as “a good mental break where [Ullmark] doesn’t have to think about hockey and grinding.”
- Travel planning: In a Seattle example, a goalie slated for the second half of a road back-to-back traveled ahead instead of arriving late after the previous night’s game.
- Practice adjustments: A team may reduce unnecessary saves or butterfly drops, use a goalie coach for focused positional work, or have the starter leave before high-volume rush drills. Carolina goaltending coach Paul Schonfelder said limiting butterfly repetitions becomes a discussion when the team has three NHL goalies at once.
A night off can provide a break from the sustained concentration of game day even when a goalie continues skating, training or preparing. Rest does not necessarily mean stopping all hockey activity.

How teams track movement and physical load
Games are only part of the workload. A “drop rate” or “down count” tracks how often a goalie drops into the butterfly during games and practices. NHL.com reported in November 2025 that more than 80 percent of NHL teams monitor butterfly drops using Catapult technology; the article did not state the survey or measurement date, so the figure is best understood as that report’s estimate.
The same report described wearable measures of total workload and side-to-side asymmetry. It quoted Dalhousie University goalie-biomechanics specialist Dr. Ryan Frayne estimating that a butterfly drop can impose force of about twice a goalie’s body weight, depending on the goalie and movement. A goalie can make more than 100 butterfly drops in a game. These are context for why teams monitor activity, not evidence that any particular count causes injury.

Why the backup’s rhythm matters too
Sharing starts can give the primary goalie more recovery time, but a backup who waits too long between starts may lose game rhythm or feel uncertain. Goalie coaches can balance practice responsibilities with game-like drills to help preserve timing and confidence. David Marcoux’s 2018 NHL.com analysis recommended that a reliable backup play at least every 10 days; that is his coaching guidance, not a league rule or standard.
NHL.com has also described the broader trend toward tandem use and shared workload. Its March 2025 reporting said top goalies commonly played close to 60 games rather than 70. That describes a trend, not a target every team or goalie must meet. The right balance depends on the roster, the schedule and the club’s assessment of its options.
