NFL teams submit their inactive lists to game officials as part of a Game Day Administration Report at the pregame meeting held 90 minutes before scheduled kickoff. That is the documented team-to-officials deadline—not a league-wide deadline for when fans must see a public announcement. The NFL sources describing the procedure do not specify a universal public posting time or channel.
When do NFL teams release inactive lists?
The NFL’s Game and Stadium Prep page says club public-relations representatives deliver a Game Day Administration Report to the referee at the pregame officiating meeting. The report includes each club’s inactive list. That meeting takes place 90 minutes before the game’s scheduled kickoff; the league’s Countdown to Kickoff page describes the same handoff.
This establishes when officials receive the lists. It does not establish that every team must make its list public at that exact time. The cited NFL pages do not set one required fan-facing release time or publication channel, so a specific team’s announcement may appear at a different time or through a channel of its choosing.
What does “inactive” mean on game day?
The inactive list identifies rostered players who will not be in that club’s game-day active group. It is distinct from the broader active/inactive roster: being on the 53-player roster does not by itself mean a player is eligible to play in that particular game.

For regular-season and postseason games, the NFL’s 2024 Record & Fact Book describes a game-day active limit of 47 players, or 48 when a club carries eight offensive linemen, with five or six inactive players completing a 53-player roster. NFL Football Operations’ Contract Language page also states the 47/48-player limit and the eight-offensive-lineman condition.
The same Contract Language page distinguishes the 53-player active/inactive list from game-day active limits and notes that practice-squad elevations can, in specified circumstances, increase the club’s active/inactive list to 54 or 55. Those elevations do not change the distinction between a club’s broader roster and the smaller group active for a game. The NFL publishes a 2026 Rulebook; roster figures should be checked against current league guidance because rules and agreements can change.

Why the public announcement can be confusing
- Official handoff: The documented 90-minute point concerns the report delivered to the referee and the pregame officials’ meeting.
- Public announcement: The cited league material does not impose a single exact time or channel for public release.
- Scheduled kickoff: The 90-minute interval is measured from that game’s scheduled kickoff, not from a fixed clock time that applies to every matchup.
As a result, “NFL inactives are due 90 minutes before kickoff” is accurate only when it refers to the team-to-officials report. It overstates the evidence if presented as a guaranteed public-posting deadline for every team.
