Network APIs let authorized apps use selected capabilities inside a mobile network—such as checking a phone number, requesting network-quality functions, or accessing location services—through software interfaces. For telcos, the shift is from selling connectivity alone toward making parts of the network usable as a platform for digital services. The direction is taking shape, but a published API standard is not proof that every operator offers that API or that it is commercially available in every market.

What is a telco network API?

A network API is an interface through which an authorized application can request a selected network capability. Depending on the API, it may return information from the network or allow an application to request a change to network behavior. Rather than requiring app developers to understand the underlying telecom systems, the interface presents a defined way to request a specific function.

CAMARA, an open-source project hosted by the Linux Foundation, describes this abstraction as a way to make network services easier for developers without telecom expertise to consume while accounting for privacy and regulatory requirements. Its project materials describe API definitions and reference implementations as free to use under the Apache 2.0 license.

How do Open Gateway, CAMARA, and API platforms fit together?

These names describe different parts of the ecosystem, not interchangeable products. The GSMA’s Open Gateway is an industry framework intended to make access to operator networks more consistent for developers and cloud providers. CAMARA develops and tests common API definitions and reference implementations in collaboration with the GSMA Operator Platform Group. An API management or network-exposure platform helps an operator control, secure, document, and distribute access to those interfaces.

Layer What it does What it does not establish
Operator Owns and runs the network, controls which capabilities it exposes, and sets access conditions. Membership in an industry framework does not mean every API is deployed.
API specification Defines a common interface so applications can make a particular kind of request. A definition alone does not show that a given operator offers it or that it works identically across networks.
Exposure or API management platform Supports access control, security, documentation, and distribution of APIs. Using a platform does not by itself prove customer adoption, revenue, or universal network coverage.
Developer or enterprise Integrates an available API into an app or business service, subject to operator and market terms. A common interface does not remove the need to check coverage, permissions, and commercial arrangements.

Aggregators and platform providers may also help a customer reach capabilities across multiple operators. Standards can reduce the need for one-off integrations, but the operator still controls access and availability. Commercial terms, support, security, consent, and regulatory obligations remain relevant.

What can businesses do with network APIs?

CAMARA’s catalog spans more than identity checks. These examples describe API families and possible functions, not a promise that they are live from every provider.

API family Examples and potential use Important qualification
Authentication and fraud prevention Number Verification can help a service check whether a user’s claimed number is consistent with network information. SIM Swap can provide a signal about a SIM-related event. These are inputs to a service’s risk decision, not identity guarantees or fraud prevention on their own.
Payments and charging Carrier billing and carrier billing refunds can support charging a purchase to a mobile account or handling a refund. Mobile payments are another use case highlighted by GSMA. Availability and payment flows depend on the operator and market.
Location and mobility Catalog examples include location retrieval, device visit location, location verification, and geofencing subscriptions; potential applications include mobility and travel services. Location access is not unrestricted tracking. Consent, privacy rules, and market-specific limits matter.
Communication quality and network control Quality on Demand, QoS provisioning, and network-slice assignment illustrate interfaces that may let an application request or interact with network quality or configuration capabilities. An API name does not guarantee a particular latency, coverage, or service level; those depend on the deployment and its terms.
Edge and computing Optimal Edge Discovery and Edge Application Management show that network API catalogs can include computing and edge services as well as identity or connectivity-related functions. Whether these capabilities can be used depends on the operator’s actual service offering.

For a business, the practical question is not simply whether an API exists in a catalog. It is whether an operator or platform offers that API where the business needs it, under terms and safeguards that fit the application.

Why are telcos exposing network capabilities?

Operators hope to participate in digital services built on top of connectivity, rather than treating the network only as the underlying transport. A reusable interface could make a network capability available to multiple business applications, while giving developers a more consistent way to request it. Operators may then pursue new commercial arrangements for access to those capabilities.

That is a potential business model, not an established industry-wide revenue result. The GSMA’s guide Understanding Network APIs attributes to McKinsey a forecast of an additional $300 billion market opportunity by 2030 for telecom companies and businesses building on network APIs. The surfaced guide does not state the year of the underlying McKinsey estimate; the figure is a forecast attributed by GSMA, not realized revenue or an independently verified outcome.

What does a real operator deployment look like?

On 23 June 2025, Ooredoo said it had expanded its collaboration with Google Cloud and adopted Apigee to scale its API ecosystem. The operator reported that developers and enterprise customers could access Silent Number Verification, SIM Swap, and direct carrier billing APIs through GSMA Open Gateway. Ooredoo described direct monetization, cross-market interoperability, and faster, more secure network integration as aims of the work. This is an operator-reported deployment and statement of objectives, not independent evidence of commercial performance.

How widespread is the effort, and what remains uncertain?

In an article published 4 March 2026, GSMA said 86 operator groups, representing more than 300 networks and 80% of global mobile connections, were aligned around a common API framework. Those are participation figures reported by GSMA, not an independently audited count of live APIs or active commercial customers. The same GSMA update described fraud prevention as particularly appealing to developers and identified facilitating mobile payments as another leading use case.

Neither the participation figure nor the growing catalog shows that all participating operators expose the same functions. The evidence also does not establish a general reduction in fraud, a conversion improvement, or API-derived revenue across the sector. Before adopting an API, businesses should verify:

  • Which operators and countries are covered, and which APIs are actually live there.
  • Whether the interface follows a standard the business can reuse across providers.
  • How authentication, authorization, consent, and data handling work for the intended use.
  • What service quality, support, and lifecycle commitments apply.
  • What pricing and commercial terms govern access.

Network APIs are therefore best understood as a developing way to make selected telecom capabilities programmable. Common frameworks and specifications can make integration more practical; they do not remove the need to validate a specific operator’s deployment, safeguards, and terms.
