“Nanotubes spot damage” can mean two different things: finding a defect in a nanotube itself, or using nanotubes to detect damage in a larger component. Researchers have demonstrated both approaches, but they use different sensors and measure different targets. Neither is a universal inspection instrument.
Two different kinds of damage detection
A point defect is a localized flaw in a nanotube’s atomic structure. Structural damage, by contrast, is a change in a host material—such as a polymer composite—that a nanotube-based sensor may detect through changes in electrical behavior. A sensor that reports damage in a component is not necessarily imaging a defect inside one of its nanotubes.

How researchers identify defects inside a nanotube
Fan, Goldsmith, and Collins reported a selective electrochemical method for labeling and counting point defects in individual SWNTs. In their 2005 study, they found an average of one chemically active defect per 4 μm in the high-quality SWNTs they examined. They also reported a one-to-one correspondence between chemically active sites and local electronic sensitivity in the SWNT circuits studied. That figure describes their samples and method, not a general defect rate for all carbon nanotubes or manufacturing processes. Read the Nature Materials paper.

A conducting CNT network can be formed within an epoxy matrix so that electrical measurements provide information about changes in the surrounding composite. Thostenson and Chou described using direct-current measurements to detect the onset, nature, and evolution of damage in polymer-based composites. In this arrangement, the target is damage in the host composite—not a count of atomic-scale defects in the nanotubes.

The authors described potential uses in evaluating self-healing and predicting material life. These are research prospects, not proof of routine field performance or a standardized inspection procedure. The network’s signal must be interpreted in the context of the composite and measurement setup. Read the Advanced Materials paper.
How CNT-coated paper and ERT map structural damage
Kim and colleagues reported a CNT-coated paper sensor for diagnosing damage in structural components. The approach applies a small current, measures electrical potentials at multiple locations, and uses ERT to estimate where multiple areas of damage are and their magnitude.

In that 2014 study, the authors reported a sensitivity of 73 ppm in the sensing area and an estimated detection limit of 29 ppm in the sensing area. They described the estimated limit as at least 30 times better than earlier results in the literature, which they gave as 0.1–0.65%. These are study-specific figures tied to the sensing area and method; they are not defect densities in nanotubes or general accuracy figures for structural inspections. Read the ACS Nano paper.
What the methods can—and cannot—tell you
- For defects in a nanotube: electrochemical labeling can identify chemically active point defects and relate them to local electronic sensitivity in the circuits studied.
- For damage in a composite: an embedded CNT network can provide electrical signals associated with damage onset and development, but interpretation depends on the material and measurement arrangement.
- For locating component damage: the CNT-coated paper and ERT study estimated the location and magnitude of multiple damage sites; its reported sensitivity and detection limit should not be generalized beyond the study.
These demonstrations do not establish a single standardized inspection protocol, broad commercial availability, or routine deployment. More generally, a 2019 review of CNT chemical sensors notes that selectivity and explaining sensing mechanisms remain challenges in the field. That caution is relevant to claims about nanotube sensing broadly; it does not negate the specific demonstrations above. Read the Chemical Reviews article.
