There is no single upload-speed minimum for cloud backups. The right speed depends on how much data you need to send and when it must be finished. Estimate the transfer time using your sustained upload speed—not just the maximum advertised by your internet plan—and allow extra time for other traffic and transfer overhead.
How to estimate cloud backup time
Backups send data from your device to a cloud service, so upload speed determines how quickly the backup can go. Restoring files from the cloud uses download speed instead. A useful ideal-time estimate is:
Ideal time in seconds = data size in bits ÷ upload rate in bits per second
For decimal units, 1 GB is 8,000 megabits and 1 TB is 8,000,000 megabits. Divide by your sustained upload rate in Mbps, then convert the answer from seconds into minutes, hours, or days.

| Data to upload | At 20 Mbps sustained | At 100 Mbps sustained |
|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | About 6.7 minutes | About 80 seconds |
| 1 TB | About 4.63 days | About 22.2 hours |
These are calculations assuming the connection continuously delivers the full stated rate. They are not provider guarantees or measured backup results. Actual transfers can take longer because of network overhead, competing traffic, latency, file counts, service-side load, or limitations of the computer and backup application. CrashPlan explains the difference between theoretical bandwidth and actual throughput in its guide to backup speed and available bandwidth; Carbonite likewise notes that upload speed and data volume affect backup duration in its backup timing guidance.
Use the data that must be sent by your deadline
For an initial backup, estimate the amount of data the service needs to upload. For later runs, use the new or changed data that must be sent during the backup window—not the total capacity of the drive. Incremental or differential backups can be much smaller than a full backup; Carbonite describes this distinction in its backup duration article.

Then compare the estimate with your deadline. If you need to send 200 GB overnight, calculate using 200 GB and the upload rate you can sustain overnight. If the result is close to the entire available window, allow more time: brief slowdowns or other household use may prevent completion. A first upload can take much longer than routine backups when only changed files are sent later.
Choose a target based on workload, not a generic Mbps rule
For a household, the available sources do not establish a universal upload-speed threshold for cloud backups. Measure your connection during the hours the backup will run, estimate the new or changed data, and check whether the result fits your deadline while leaving capacity for other users and applications.

Two published benchmarks can be useful context, but neither is a universal home-backup requirement:
- 20 Mbps upload: The U.S. Federal Communications Commission adopted a fixed-broadband benchmark of 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload in 2024. This is a general measure of advanced fixed broadband capability, not a recommendation that every backup needs 20 Mbps. See the FCC’s broadband benchmark announcement.
- At least 100 Mbps to AWS: AWS gives this recommendation for backing up on-premises VMware virtual machines to AWS Backup. AWS says the required bandwidth depends on the protected VMs, their size, incremental data, the backup window, and restore requirements. It is a workload-specific enterprise recommendation, not a home-user minimum. See AWS Backup FAQs.
The FCC also reported that average household monthly upload broadband usage grew more than 30% faster than download usage from December 2019 through December 2023, citing OpenVault data. That describes a change in traffic, not a speed target for backups; see the FCC announcement.

Why a backup can be slower than your internet plan
An advertised plan rate is not necessarily the rate the backup app can sustain. The connection is shared, and the transfer also depends on the route to the provider and the software’s handling of the files.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Other network use: Video calls, other computers, sync tools, and uploads can compete with a backup for capacity. Backblaze lists competing devices and bandwidth-heavy applications among possible limits in its backup speed guidance.
- Latency, congestion, and routing: The distance and network path to the provider, congestion along that route, and service-side sharing can affect throughput. CrashPlan explains that latency, shared application use, and congestion can make actual file-transfer speed differ from theoretical capacity in its bandwidth article.
- Compression and reporting: An app may report an effective data rate that differs from the physical amount transmitted. CrashPlan gives an example in which 10 GB of data compresses to 8 GB; transferring at 1 Mbps can then correspond to an effective rate of 1.25 Mbps for the original data.
- Computer and client settings: The computer must stay awake and connected for its backup client to upload. Settings such as throttling or the number of transfer threads can also affect results. Backblaze cautions that raising thread counts or removing limits too aggressively can consume available bandwidth or cause timeouts and connection problems; see its optimization guidance.
Ways to improve backup performance
- Measure at the time the backup runs. Use an upload measurement during the intended backup window, then base your estimate on that sustained performance rather than the plan’s advertised maximum.
- Reduce competition where practical. Schedule large backups for quieter hours or avoid running other bandwidth-heavy tasks at the same time. Backblaze recommends considering a continuous backup schedule and accounting for other applications in its speed optimization advice.
- Keep the device available. Check that the computer will not sleep, lose power, or disconnect before the backup can finish.
- Try Ethernet if Wi-Fi is the weak link. A wired connection may improve consistency when wireless performance is variable. It cannot raise the upload capacity provided by your ISP. Backblaze includes hardwiring among its possible optimizations in its backup guidance.
- Change client performance settings cautiously. If you adjust throttling or transfer threads, monitor both the backup and other network use. More aggressive settings may cause timeouts or connection issues rather than a faster reliable backup.
