How much space does a Switch 2 game need?
It depends on the game. Nintendo says storage requirements vary by title, so a single number or catalog-wide average would be misleading. The official listing for the game is the useful figure to check for your purchase; Nintendo also cautions that updates may increase the required space. Nintendo UK’s digital-game guidance labels its example requirements as current as of July 2026.

Nintendo’s US store lists STARBITES – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition at 20.9 GB and the Nintendo Switch version at 10.5 GB. The Switch 2 Edition is listed with a July 14, 2026 release date. How much of the console’s storage is available for games?
Nintendo advertises Switch 2 with 256 GB of internal storage, with a portion reserved for system use. That means the full advertised capacity is not available for downloaded games. The usable amount can also be shared with software and its updates or downloadable content, so check the space available on your console rather than assuming all 256 GB is free. How many games fit on a Switch 2?
There is no reliable fixed game count: titles have different storage requirements, and available space is less than the console’s advertised 256 GB. To estimate for your own library, use the listed size for each title you plan to install, account for updates and DLC, and compare the total with the free space shown in the console’s data-management settings. Recheck listings when updates are available because requirements can rise.
Do you need a microSD Express card?
Nintendo’s current support FAQ says no individual game currently requires additional storage space to play. An expansion card is therefore not a requirement for playing any one game under that FAQ, though it can help if you want more downloadable software installed at once. Whether it is worthwhile depends on the size of your library and how much you keep installed.

The 2 TB figure is Nintendo’s supported maximum for cards meeting the standard, not a recommendation that every owner buy a card of that size. Can you use an old Switch SD card?
No, not to save or load digital games on Switch 2. Switch 2 requires microSD Express for expandable storage of games; ordinary microSD cards used with the original Switch are not compatible for that purpose. What can a microSD Express card store?
When inserted, a microSD Express card becomes the default save location for downloadable software. Downloaded games, updates, and DLC can be stored on the card, but game save data remains in System Memory. Expansion therefore adds room for installed content, not a place to move game saves. How to check a game’s storage requirement
- Before buying digitally: Open the game’s Nintendo eShop listing and check its storage requirement.
- Before buying a physical copy: Check the game packaging for its storage information.
- Before downloading an update or DLC: Check the available space on the console and review the game’s listing or update information; requirements can rise after updates.
- If the console is short on space: Remove or archive content you do not need installed, or consider a compatible microSD Express card. Do not assume an ordinary microSD card from the original Switch will work for digital games.
