If $80 is the game’s pre-tax price, calculate the checkout total using the tax rate that applies to your purchase: $80 × (1 + tax rate). At a hypothetical 8% rate, that is $86.40; at a hypothetical 10% rate, it is $88.00. There is no single exact total without knowing your location and storefront. A platform fee also should not be assumed to be an extra charge on top of the buyer’s $80 price.
How to calculate the total for an $80 game
First check whether $80 is the price before tax or a tax-inclusive displayed price. If tax is added at checkout, multiply $80 by one plus the applicable tax rate. For example, at a hypothetical 8% rate: $80 × 1.08 = $86.40. At a hypothetical 10% rate: $80 × 1.10 = $88. These rates are arithmetic examples, not estimates for a particular place.

Not automatically. A platform’s commercial fee arrangement is not necessarily a separate consumer checkout charge. The sources cited here explain tax treatment and platform terms; they do not establish a universal buyer-facing platform surcharge. Do not add a generic fee percentage to $80 unless the store actually displays a separate charge in your cart or transaction summary.

How storefronts display tax
PlayStation in the United States
PlayStation’s U.S. terms say: “Prices listed do not include sales tax. Applicable sales tax will be calculated and added at the time you complete a transaction.” The terms also recognize jurisdictions that require tax-inclusive prices. This is a U.S.-specific statement, not a rule for every country or storefront. Read PlayStation Network’s U.S. Terms of Service, section 8.14.
Steam
Steam says its prices include VAT in countries where it collects VAT. Its tax FAQ says sales tax is added on top of the Steam price in applicable U.S. jurisdictions. The displayed-price treatment therefore differs by tax type and location. See Steamworks’ Taxes FAQ.

What to check before buying
- Confirm whether the listed $80 is pre-tax or already includes applicable consumption tax.
- Check the tax and any other line items shown at checkout for your location.
- Do not treat a platform’s commercial fee as a buyer charge unless it appears as one in the transaction summary.
- If you need an exact figure, identify the country or region and storefront; the title alone does not provide enough information.
Platform terms may also cover matters other than the checkout amount, such as tax collection where required by law and the rights attached to a subscription or license. Those terms do not establish a general platform surcharge for an $80 game. See the Steam Subscriber Agreement.
