For one FFmpeg process looping a local video to YouTube Live, 2 GB of RAM is a cautious practical starting point for a minimal Linux VPS. A lean 1 GB VPS may work if FFmpeg stream-copies compatible audio and video without filters, but it leaves less room for the operating system and supporting services. These are workload-based rules of thumb—not official FFmpeg or YouTube requirements or tested guarantees.
How much RAM should you start with?
Use 2 GB as a conservative starting allocation for a single, straightforward loop stream on a minimal Linux server. It gives more headroom than 1 GB for the operating system, FFmpeg, monitoring, and a process supervisor or reconnect logic. It does not guarantee a stream will work: CPU capacity, source format, FFmpeg settings, and network reliability matter too.
A 1 GB VPS may be adequate when the file is compatible with YouTube’s ingest requirements and FFmpeg copies its encoded audio and video rather than decoding and re-encoding them. Because no cited official documentation specifies a universal VPS RAM minimum, treat either figure as a starting point to validate with your actual workload.
What changes the RAM requirement?
Stream copy versus re-encoding
With stream copy, FFmpeg passes compatible encoded streams through without video encoding. A command that uses an encoder such as libx264 instead decodes and re-encodes video. That is a materially heavier workload, and whether it can keep up depends especially on CPU capacity and encoding settings. Google’s guidance for live encoding says the encoder must sustain at least real-time speed; this is not a RAM sizing rule. See Google’s live encoding guidance.

Resolution, frame rate, filters, and concurrent streams
Do not assume the simple 2 GB starting point is sufficient if you re-encode, apply filters, use a high-resolution or high-frame-rate source, run several streams, or share the VPS with other services. Choose a plan with headroom, run the intended command, and observe memory and CPU under representative conditions. More RAM will not fix an encoder that cannot process frames in real time.
Looping does not mean loading the entire file into RAM
FFmpeg loops a file as an input behavior; the media file’s full size is not a sensible estimate of the VPS memory requirement. Measure the running process and the system’s available memory instead. For file-based real-time playback, FFmpeg documents -re as equivalent to -readrate 1; input options belong before the corresponding -i input. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for option behavior and scoping.

How to size and verify a VPS
- Inspect the command and media. Identify whether video and audio use
-c copyor encoders, whether filters are applied, and the source resolution and frame rate. Confirm that the output format and codecs are suitable for the chosen YouTube ingest path. - Select a starting allocation. For one uncomplicated stream on a minimal Linux image, begin with 2 GB if you want a cautious margin. Consider 1 GB only for a lean, stream-copy workload and be prepared to monitor closely or upgrade. For re-encoding, filters, multiple streams, or other server workloads, choose more headroom based on measurement rather than assuming those starting figures apply.
- Run the exact loop and output configuration. Test the same FFmpeg build, command, media, and YouTube ingest method you plan to use. Include the real supervisor, monitoring, and reconnect setup if you will run them in production.
- Monitor during a representative run. Check FFmpeg’s resident memory and system available memory after startup, as the stream continues, and when the loop wraps. Watch CPU and network behavior as well as memory. Upgrade if memory approaches the host limit or the process is terminated under pressure.
- Use benchmark output cautiously. FFmpeg’s
-benchmarkcan report maximum memory on supported systems, but the manual notes that this reporting is unsupported on some systems and may show zero. Treat it as one diagnostic, not a universal sizing guarantee; see the FFmpeg manual. - Check YouTube stream health separately. Review the chosen ingest path’s codec, audio/video presence, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe/GOP feedback. YouTube’s Live Streaming API health documentation describes configuration and delivery issues; a warning does not by itself show that RAM is low.
RAM is only one VPS selection criterion
Compare plans against the actual stream rather than choosing by memory alone. Provider specifications and prices can change, so verify current details before buying.
| Factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Memory | Headroom for the Linux image, FFmpeg, monitoring, supervisor or reconnect processes, and other workloads; validate with observed memory use. |
| CPU and processing mode | Whether the command copies streams or encodes them, the CPU available to the VM, and whether the encoder sustains real-time output. |
| Source workload | Resolution, frame rate, filters, audio processing, and number of simultaneous streams. |
| Network | Sustained upload capacity and transfer limits relative to the outgoing stream bitrate. |
| Operations | Monitoring, restart supervision, reconnect behavior, and the spare capacity your budget can support. |
Keep YouTube ingest settings distinct from RAM sizing
YouTube stream-health diagnostics cover issues such as codecs, missing audio or video, bitrate, frame rate, and GOP or keyframe frequency. These settings affect delivery, but they do not establish how much memory a VPS needs. For YouTube’s HLS ingest specifically, its guide describes supported frame rates up to 60 fps, closed GOP, and segments recommended at one to four seconds and no longer than five seconds. The Live API’s corresponding GOP warnings identify a keyframe frequency of four seconds or less as the target. These are ingest and stream-configuration details, not VPS RAM requirements: consult the YouTube HLS guide and Live API health documentation.

Troubleshooting memory and stream problems
- FFmpeg is terminated or the VPS runs out of memory: Check process resident memory and system available memory, then reduce competing workloads or upgrade the VPS. Re-check after the change using the actual stream.
- The stream buffers or falls behind during re-encoding: Check CPU use and whether encoding sustains real-time speed. Additional RAM alone will not resolve insufficient processing capacity.
- YouTube reports a stream-health warning: Check the warning’s specific setting—such as codec, bitrate, frame rate, audio/video presence, or GOP/keyframe frequency. Do not infer low RAM from a configuration warning.
- The stream drops or delivery is inconsistent: Check the VPS’s sustained upload capacity and transfer limits, then review YouTube’s health feedback and your restart or reconnect setup. A healthy memory reading does not prove delivery settings or network capacity are correct.
-benchmarkreports zero or no useful memory figure: The FFmpeg manual says maximum-memory reporting is unsupported on some systems. Use operating-system process and available-memory monitoring instead.
