Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a small Minecraft Java server running vanilla or Paper, start with about 2–4 GB of Java heap. A modpack, plugins, higher player activity, or longer view distances can call for more. These are practical starting points, not official Mojang server requirements. Leave additional memory for Java overhead and the operating system rather than giving Java the whole machine.
First, distinguish client RAM from server RAM
Mojang’s Java Edition system requirements describe the computer running the game client, not the heap to allocate to a dedicated server. In its requirements published July 21, 2026, Mojang lists a minimum target of 1080p at 30 FPS with 8 GB of system RAM when using a discrete GPU, or 12 GB with integrated graphics. Its recommended 1080p-at-60-FPS target lists 16 GB. Those figures should not be used as server-memory recommendations. Mojang’s Java Edition system requirements provide the client context.
The distinction also applies to the game’s memory setting: Java Edition 26.1 increased the default client allocation from 2 GB to 4 GB. That change does not set a dedicated server’s heap size. Mojang’s 26.1 release notes describe the client allocation.
Starting heap by server workload
Use these numbers as initial Java heap allocations, then validate them with the actual world and player activity. They are estimates, not guarantees or official Mojang requirements.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Server workload | Practical starting point | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| A few friends on vanilla or Paper | About 2–4 GB | A 2026 third-party guide estimates 2 GB for 2–5 friends under its assumptions; 4 GB offers more room. Workload and version can change the result. Minecraft Java Servers’ 2026 estimate. |
| Small public or busier vanilla/Paper server | About 4 GB as an initial allocation | PaperMC’s startup example uses a 4 GB heap; its separate Aikar’s flags advice gives a broader 6–10 GB recommendation. These figures reflect different guidance and assumptions, not one universal minimum. PaperMC’s Aikar’s flags guidance. |
| Modpack | About 6–10 GB as an estimate | This is a 2026 third-party guide’s estimate, not a Mojang requirement. Actual needs vary by pack and server load; a pack’s client memory label does not directly specify server heap. Minecraft Java Servers’ 2026 estimate. |
| Large public server or heavy workload | No reliable universal GB-per-player figure | Capacity depends on software, configuration, active entities, world activity, and CPU as well as memory. Measure the running server instead of extrapolating from player slots. PaperMC’s guidance. |
Keep memory for the host, not just the heap
Java’s -Xmx setting caps the heap; it is not the entire process or machine’s memory use. PaperMC advises leaving about 1,000–1,500 MB beyond Xmx for Java overhead and the operating system, and warns shared-host users not to allocate all available memory. Its Aikar’s flags page gives a broad 6–10 GB baseline and says returns diminish beyond a point; treat that as PaperMC operational guidance, not a universal requirement for every server. PaperMC’s current Aikar’s flags documentation.
For example, if a host offers 4 GB total physical memory, setting the Java heap to 4 GB leaves no room for those other demands. The advertised memory on a host plan may mean total machine memory or a Java allocation; check what the provider is counting before comparing plans.

What changes the amount of RAM you need
Server software and version
Vanilla, Paper, plugin-heavy setups, and modded servers can have different memory behavior. Match the Java runtime to the server version and check PaperMC’s live compatibility table before setup: its listed guidance is Java 21 for versions 1.20–1.21.11 and Java 25 for 26.1 and later. Compatibility guidance can change. PaperMC’s getting-started documentation.
Mods, plugins, and player activity
Added content and systems can raise memory use, but the number of player slots alone does not give a dependable heap formula. Explore-heavy sessions, farms, entities, generated worlds, plugins, and mods all affect the work the server must handle. Server-side requirements are distinct from a modpack’s client requirements.

View distance and simulation distance
These settings influence the server’s workload, but the official property reference does not give a fixed RAM saving for each increment. PaperMC documents both view-distance and simulation-distance; simulation distance controls where entities are ticked. Adjust settings with the workload in mind, rather than relying on an unsupported RAM-per-chunk calculation. PaperMC’s server properties reference.
CPU and tick performance
More heap will not cure every kind of lag. If memory is not persistently constrained, tick processing or CPU capacity, plugins or mods, and server settings may be the more relevant bottleneck. Diagnose the symptom before increasing the heap.

How to set an allocation and check whether it is enough
- Identify the workload. Note whether this is Java or Bedrock, the server version and software, the mods or plugins, likely concurrent activity, and configured distances. The numerical guidance here is primarily for Java/Paper servers and should not be silently applied to Bedrock.
- Choose a conservative heap. Set
-Xmsand-Xmxto an appropriate initial amount while preserving host headroom. PaperMC’s example startup command uses a 4 GB heap; consult its setup instructions for the current command format. PaperMC’s startup guidance. - Run the real workload and observe memory. Check heap use after garbage collection, not just a temporary high-water mark. A 2026 third-party guide suggests considering more memory if post-GC use remains above roughly 80% of the heap or old-generation collections happen every few minutes. These are that guide’s diagnostic heuristics, not validated universal thresholds. Minecraft Java Servers’ 2026 guide.
- Investigate lag that persists without memory pressure. Check tick performance, CPU capacity, plugins or mods, and settings before buying more RAM; a larger heap may not address the cause.
- For self-hosting, verify the platform before upgrading physical RAM. Check the motherboard or system’s supported memory generation, form factor, and capacity before selecting a compatible RAM kit. There is no one universally compatible module.
