Those are software-level requirements, not a guarantee that a computer can stream a game or a complex production smoothly. The right amount for your setup depends on what else the computer is doing, and the official guidance does not give a RAM figure for each workload.
What OBS’s RAM figures do—and do not—tell you
The OBS Studio store listing states 4 GB RAM minimum and 8 GB recommended for its listed Windows and macOS requirements. Treat those as the listing’s baseline for OBS, not as a universal recommendation for streaming games, recording locally, or running elaborate scenes. The listing’s publication date is not shown in the captured result.
OBS’s official system requirements page does not specify a RAM capacity. It warns: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” The page, dated August 25, 2021, says CPU needs vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and points users to the Auto-Configuration Wizard to find settings suited to their hardware. Is 8 GB enough for your stream?
Eight gigabytes is the OBS store listing’s recommended amount for the software, but that alone cannot establish whether it is enough for your particular stream. Consider what runs alongside OBS and test your actual setup rather than treating the number as a performance guarantee.

- Streaming or streaming plus recording: A local recording adds another task to the computer’s workload; the cited guidance does not quantify its RAM use.
- Simple or complex scenes: Multiple sources and browser-based overlays make a scene more involved. OBS identifies scene complexity as a factor in CPU requirements, but its guidance does not provide a RAM estimate for a given scene.
- Streaming or streaming and gaming: A game runs alongside OBS and may change what your system needs. The cited sources do not provide a measured RAM prescription for this combination.
These are planning questions, not a workload-by-workload memory chart: the official guidance does not publish one. For encoding specifically, Twitch says x264 can be CPU-intensive, and that higher resolution and frame rate require more encoding power. System RAM is not GPU memory
System RAM and graphics-card memory (VRAM) are different resources. Twitch’s surfaced 1440p guidance includes software, GPU, operating-system, display-resolution, and upstream-bandwidth requirements; its dual-format guidance includes broadcast software, GPU and driver, upstream bandwidth, and track counts. Should you upgrade your RAM?
First compare your current memory capacity with the OBS listing’s baseline, then evaluate your actual workload. The cited official guidance does not establish a universal capacity that guarantees smooth streaming, or a measured amount for gaming, recording, 1440p, or dual-format broadcasts. If you are deciding whether to upgrade, assess the full computer and the applications you run—not just the stream resolution or a single RAM number.
Check compatibility before buying
Memory must match what your computer or motherboard supports. Desktop DIMMs and laptop SO-DIMMs have different form factors, and memory generations are not interchangeable. Check the computer or motherboard model and its supported memory type and maximum capacity before choosing a kit; the general streaming guidance does not identify one universally suitable upgrade.

Check settings with OBS before changing hardware
OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can suggest settings for your hardware. Use it as a starting point, then try the scenes, applications, and recording options you actually plan to use. OBS’s own warning remains important: compatible hardware does not necessarily have enough performance for every streaming or recording workload.
