AMD says up to 96GB of that 128GB can be made available for graphics, but this is an allocation capability—not a guarantee that a particular application or model will run well. Choose SSD capacity separately, based on the operating system, applications, models, datasets, and project files you need stored locally.
How much memory does a Ryzen AI Max+ workstation support?
AMD specifies up to 128GB of 256-bit LPDDR5x-8000 memory for the Ryzen AI Max+ 395. That is the processor platform ceiling, not a promise that every workstation using it will be sold with every capacity. Confirm the memory configuration on the exact system and SKU before ordering.
Unlike a conventional setup with separate system RAM and dedicated graphics memory, Ryzen AI Max systems use a shared pool for CPU, integrated GPU, and NPU workloads. AMD says up to 96GB of a 128GB pool can be available to graphics. The actual amount available to an application depends on the system’s configuration and software; it should not be read as a fixed graphics reservation or a performance guarantee. AMD describes this capability in its January 2025 announcement. AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395 specifications list the memory type, bus width, speed, and maximum capacity.
How much RAM should you choose?
Base the choice on the largest workload you expect to keep in memory at once. There is no workload-independent minimum established for Ryzen AI Max+ workstations: ordinary development, office work, and creative projects vary too much to support a universal lower-capacity recommendation.

For local AI or graphics-heavy work
More capacity can give large data, model, or graphics workloads more room in the shared pool. But memory capacity alone does not establish whether a model will run acceptably. Software support, model quantization, context length, graphics-memory allocation, and the performance you need all matter.
For a concrete system example, AMD lists its Ryzen AI Halo developer platform with 128GB LPDDR5x-8000 memory and 256GB/s memory bandwidth. That is a specification for the Halo platform, not a general requirement for every workstation. See AMD’s Ryzen AI Halo developer platform specifications.

For everyday development and creator work
Compare the capacities actually offered by the system manufacturer with the needs of your applications and project sizes. The available specifications do not establish one correct lower amount for all buyers.
Check whether memory can be changed later
Do not assume that desktop-style memory modules can be added. The processor uses LPDDR5x, and the cited specifications do not establish upgradeability for every workstation model. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact SKU, including whether its memory is soldered and whether reconfiguration is supported.

How much SSD storage should you choose?
SSD space is separate from RAM. Estimate what needs to stay on the workstation: the operating system and applications, local models, datasets, caches, media, and active project files. If you keep several large models or datasets locally, allow headroom rather than treating 2TB as a universal target. The available product specifications do not set a workload-based storage minimum.
Two manufacturer examples show that 2TB configurations exist. AMD lists a 2TB M.2 SSD for the Ryzen AI Halo developer platform. MSI’s US store listed a PRO MAX EDGE AI+ 11M-006US configuration with the Ryzen AI Max+ 395, 128GB memory, and 2TB M.2 NVMe storage when accessed on October 4, 2026. These are specific product examples, not requirements or specifications for every Ryzen AI Max+ workstation. Check current listings and the exact system configuration.

Can you add another SSD?
That depends on the workstation, not just the processor. MSI lists two M.2 PCIe Gen4 x4 SSD slots for its PRO MAX EDGE AI+ specifications. This is an MSI system feature, not a Ryzen AI Max platform guarantee. Before buying a drive, confirm the exact SKU’s number of free slots, supported drive dimensions and interface, whether a second slot is already occupied, user-upgradeability, and warranty terms.

What to compare before buying
- Memory configuration: the LPDDR5x capacity offered for the exact system, and whether it meets your workload needs.
- Shared-memory behavior: how the system and software allocate memory to applications and graphics, and whether your software supports the relevant GPU or NPU path.
- SSD capacity and expansion: installed storage, free M.2 slots, supported drive format and interface, and whether storage is user-upgradeable.
- Exact SKU: verify processor, memory, and storage against the manufacturer’s listing. Do not transfer one vendor’s configuration to another workstation using the same processor.
