OBS’s general guidance recommends a quad-core CPU for 1080p streaming and 8 GB RAM, but OBS says CPU needs vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Those OBS recommendations are not a tested VPS benchmark. OBS system requirements and its Windows download page provide the relevant baseline.
What the starting estimate covers
The 4-vCPU, 8-GB estimate is for one relatively simple 1080p30 OBS stream that encodes video on the Windows VPS. It is an inference from OBS’s published general recommendations, not a specification validated for every VPS provider or workload. OBS lists 4 GB RAM as a minimum and 8 GB as recommended; it lists a dual-core CPU and recommends a quad-core CPU for streaming at 1080p. A minimum requirement is not a prudent target for an unattended Windows workload, so leave memory headroom for Windows and other running software.
There is no universal VPS size for every YouTube loop. If the VPS only relays an already encoded feed without re-encoding it, its compute demand may be lower; that is a technical distinction, not a published VPS benchmark. Multiple simultaneous streams, software encoding, higher frame rates, scaling, filters, overlays, or a complex OBS scene can make the starting estimate inadequate. Test the exact workload rather than extrapolating from a plan’s advertised vCPU count.
What changes CPU and RAM demand
Encoding method
When OBS decodes the source video and encodes a new outgoing stream, the VPS must perform that encoding work. OBS identifies encoder choice as a factor in CPU requirements. Hardware encoding can shift work away from the CPU, but only if the particular VPS exposes a compatible graphics device, driver, and encoder to OBS. Do not assume that a provider’s “GPU” label means OBS can use hardware encoding; see OBS’s hardware encoding guidance. If using x264 software encoding, its load depends on the selected settings and workload; OBS documents the encoder at Streaming with x264.

Resolution, frame rate, and scene
Higher resolution or frame rate increases the work involved in processing and encoding video. Scene complexity matters too: filters, animated elements, scaling, and multiple sources can add work. OBS’s guidance names encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity as factors; it does not give a single CPU figure that covers all combinations.
Memory and other applications
Use OBS’s 8-GB recommendation as a sensible starting point for a Windows VPS running OBS, not as a promise that every stream will fit comfortably. Windows, OBS, source handling, and any additional applications also use memory. More RAM does not compensate for an overloaded CPU or an unstable upload connection.

YouTube bitrate is not a VPS sizing number
YouTube’s recommended ingest settings describe the stream sent to YouTube and the upload path it needs; they do not specify the VPS’s CPU or RAM. The YouTube Help encoder table checked in 2026 lists H.264 recommended bitrates of 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60, and higher recommended rates of 14 Mbps and 17 Mbps respectively for those resolutions and frame rates. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before configuring a stream because platform guidance can change.
- YouTube supports live ingest using RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps, according to its encoder guidance.
- YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds.
- Choose an ingest bitrate the VPS’s outbound connection can sustain. Increasing CPU does not fix insufficient or unstable upload capacity.
Check Windows VPS compatibility before buying
OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its system requirements. A listing that states only vCPU and RAM does not establish that the virtual machine meets those requirements or that OBS can access its graphics hardware. Verify the provider’s Windows image and licensing, graphics or virtual-display support, driver compatibility, and usable hardware encoder access if your setup depends on it. Then test OBS on the actual instance.

For a 24/7 YouTube live stream, compare VPS options on the details that affect sustained operation—not just the headline core count:
- Whether CPU allocation is sustained and how the provider describes contention or throttling.
- RAM available to the Windows instance and the Windows image or licensing included.
- DirectX and graphics support, including whether OBS can use the specific hardware encoder you plan to select.
- Outbound upload capacity and any relevant network limits.
- Provider support for long-running sessions.
These are buying checks, not claims that any particular provider or plan has passed them.

Test the loop before leaving it live
- Build the production OBS setup. Use the same source video, scene, overlays, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you intend to run continuously.
- Run a representative test. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. A static or lightweight test may not reveal problems that appear with the actual video or scene.
- Check the outgoing stream and connection. Confirm YouTube receives the intended settings and monitor YouTube’s stream health during the test. Watch for dropped frames, encoder overload, or connection instability rather than assuming the VPS is suitable because OBS opens successfully.
- Keep the test on the actual VPS. A successful test on a desktop does not prove the provider’s virtual graphics, drivers, CPU allocation, or upload path will behave the same way.
- Test the unattended workflow. Verify the loop, stream key setup, and recovery behavior you plan to rely on before treating the stream as continuous.
Common sizing and setup problems
OBS reports encoding overload
The encoder may be taking longer than real time, commonly because the selected encoding workload is too demanding for the available CPU or accessible hardware encoder. Confirm that OBS is using the intended encoder, then reduce workload—such as resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity—or move to a VPS that can handle the tested settings. Hardware encoding is only an option if the VPS exposes compatible hardware and drivers.
The stream buffers or YouTube reports connection trouble
This points to the outbound connection or ingest settings rather than proving that more RAM or CPU is needed. Check that the VPS can sustain the selected bitrate, use YouTube’s recommended CBR and keyframe settings, and inspect stream health. A higher-spec CPU cannot repair an inadequate or unstable upload path.

OBS will not use the expected hardware encoder
Confirm that the VPS actually exposes compatible graphics hardware, that its driver is installed and usable, and that OBS can access the encoder. A plan description alone does not establish those conditions. If they are unavailable, size and configure the instance for the software encoder you will actually use.
The stream works briefly but fails during continuous operation
A short successful start does not demonstrate that the full loop, scene, network path, or provider allocation will remain reliable. Run a longer representative test and monitor YouTube stream health. Confirm the VPS provider supports the intended long-running workload and investigate whether the failure is CPU, encoder, or network related before changing only the RAM allocation.
