How much phone storage do you need? It depends on what you keep on your phone: photos and videos, apps and games, offline downloads, and files. Start with your current phone’s storage breakdown, then estimate what you’ll add and keep until you replace it. A smaller local library and reliable cloud backup may make a smaller capacity workable; lots of high-resolution video, large games, or offline media calls for more room. There is no official capacity recommendation that fits every phone owner.
How to estimate the storage you need
Check what you use now
On an iPhone, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. You’ll see available space, app usage, and possibly recommendations. On Android, open Settings > Storage; labels and screens vary by device and Android version. These views are a better starting point than trying to estimate from the number of files you have.
Look at the categories taking the most space, including photos and videos, app documents and data, games, downloaded music or video, messaging attachments, and other files. Apple identifies photos and videos, downloaded videos, files, and apps as common storage users. Google distinguishes storage, which holds data such as photos and music, from memory, which runs programs such as apps and the Android system (Google Android Help).

Estimate what you plan to keep locally over the years you expect to use the phone. Consider whether you’ll record longer or higher-resolution videos, keep several games installed, download shows or music for travel, or regularly move originals to a computer or drive. This is a planning method, not a fixed formula: file sizes vary with the phone, settings, app updates, and downloaded content.
#1 Best Overall
- EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Insert your card to add massive storage up to 1.5TB[1] to your Android smartphones and tablets, digital cameras, and laptops.
- SPACE FOR MORE. With expansive capacities up to 1.5TB[1], capture and store hours of Full HD video[4], movies, music, games, photos, and podcasts.
- MOVE FILES FAST. Use your card with the SANDISK QuickFlow microSD UHS-I Card USB-A Reader[6] to achieve up to 195MB/s[2] read speeds [128GB-1.5TB models] and offload your content fast.
- LOAD APPS IN A SNAP. Rated A1[3], the SANDISK Ultra microSD card is optimized for faster app launch and overall app performance.
- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
Keep usable headroom
Avoid choosing a capacity on the assumption that every byte will be available for your files. New captures, downloads, app data, and updates all need room. Apple’s requirement that at least 10 percent of device storage be free applies specifically to recording ProRes; it is not a universal reserve rule for all phones or uses.
Photos and video can change the calculation
Photos
Photo file sizes vary with camera resolution, format, and capture features, so a photo count alone cannot reliably predict storage use. Motion or Live Photo features can also affect how much space a capture takes. Check the actual photo-library usage on your current phone rather than assuming every image has the same size.

Video
Video storage depends on resolution, frame rate, duration, codec, and recording format. Professional formats can make a particularly large difference: Apple Support says ProRes files are up to 30 times larger than HEVC files, and requires at least 10 percent of device storage to be free to record ProRes. Those figures apply to Apple’s ProRes guidance; they should not be generalized to all videos or phones.

For some video workflows, Apple documents direct ProRes recording to an external USB-C drive on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro models. Its guidance specifies a drive write speed of at least 220 MB/s for 4K60 ProRes and at least 440 MB/s for 4K120 ProRes. These are requirements for the named models and recording modes. An external drive can help with this supported video workflow, but it does not add built-in space for ordinary apps, games, or every camera workflow.

- Expand your storage in a flash: ideal for Android smartphones and tablets, and Windows laptops.
- Up to 140MB/s transfer speeds to move up to 1000 photos per minute
- Load apps faster with A1-rated performance
- View, access, and back up your phone’s files in one location with the SanDisk Memory Zone app
- Relax knowing your card is backed by a 10-year limited warranty by SanDisk
Apps, games, and offline downloads
An app’s footprint can include more than its initial download: installed assets, documents, downloads, and cached content also use space. Games may add substantial content after installation, but there is no reliable universal size range for games. Check storage by app on your own phone, especially after downloading additional game content.
Offline music and video, messaging attachments, and files can also compete with apps and camera media for local space. On iPhone, you can offload an unused app while retaining its documents and data. Android app archiving is available on supported configurations and removes an unused app while preserving personal data.

Cloud backup can reduce local copies, with trade-offs
Cloud storage and phone storage are separate. A backup or photo-optimization feature may reduce the originals kept locally, but it does not make device storage unlimited; the result depends on upload completion, settings, account capacity, connectivity, and whether you need files offline.
Apple says Optimize Storage can keep full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud while making more space available on the device (Apple Support: Manage your photo and video storage). Before deleting local originals, confirm that upload has finished and that the service’s quality setting matches what you want to preserve.

Google Photos’ Storage saver changes the quality of some backed-up items: photos larger than 16 MP are resized to 16 MP, and videos above 1080p are resized to 1080p (Google Photos Help). Items backed up in Storage saver count toward Google Account storage, which is shared by Google Photos, Google Drive, and Gmail (Google One Help). Optimization does not guarantee a particular amount of phone space will be freed; that depends on your library and settings.
Compare capacity options against your actual use
When weighing two or more built-in storage tiers, compare them against the same questions rather than relying on a universal rule of thumb:
- Local media: How much of your photo and video library will remain on the phone?
- Capture habits: Do your video resolution, frame rate, and format choices create large files, especially ProRes?
- Apps and downloads: Which large apps, games, and offline media collections need to stay installed?
- Cloud reliance: Are you comfortable depending on connectivity and account storage limits, and do backup settings preserve the quality you expect?
- Workflow: Does the exact phone model support the external-drive recording or export workflow you intend to use?
- Ownership horizon: How long will you keep the phone, and how does the price difference between capacities compare with that period?
Capacity tiers and prices vary by model and market, so check the exact phone you are considering rather than assuming one tier is available at the same price everywhere.
