Begin with algebra, functions and graphs, descriptive statistics, and basic linear algebra; then add probability, calculus, and more advanced topics as your goals require. The math needed to use models is not the same as the math needed to understand how they train or to study machine-learning theory.
What math should you know to get started?
For a beginner course, be comfortable with variables, linear equations, graphs of functions, histograms, and statistical means. Google’s Machine Learning Crash Course prerequisites also mention logarithms and the sigmoid function. Its guidance is tied to that course, not a demand to complete a university math sequence before beginning.
Basic linear algebra is useful early: learn to read vectors and matrices and understand matrix multiplication. Tensor concepts are also helpful in the Crash Course. You can start studying machine learning while learning these ideas rather than treating them as a gate you must pass first.
How much probability and statistics do you need?
For a first course
Start with descriptive statistics: what an average represents, how values vary, and how to interpret a histogram. These basics help you describe data and make sense of model outputs.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For applied study and model evaluation
Probability and statistical reasoning become more important as you study formal machine learning or evaluate how models behave. Stanford’s CS129: Machine Learning lists basic probability among its prerequisites. Columbia’s Summer 2026A Math for Machine Learning course assumes undergraduate probability and statistics and covers subjects including distributions, estimators, bias and variance, and maximum likelihood.
Which linear algebra topics matter?
Start with vectors, matrices, and matrix multiplication. As you move beyond an introductory level, add subspaces, bases, orthogonality, and matrix decompositions such as singular value decomposition and eigendecomposition. These ideas appear in Columbia’s math-focused course, illustrating how much further a formal foundation can go than the introductory concepts in a beginner course.

Do you need calculus to learn AI?
No—not as a prerequisite for every way of learning AI. Google labels calculus “optional, for advanced topics” in its Machine Learning Crash Course. You can begin a practical introduction without first mastering calculus.
Calculus becomes useful when you want to understand how models are trained and how optimization works. Derivatives, gradients, partial derivatives, and the chain rule help explain backpropagation in neural networks. A math-focused course may go further: Columbia’s syllabus includes vector calculus, gradient descent, Taylor series, Lagrangians, and convex optimization.

How do the requirements change with your goal?
| Goal | Math expectation in the cited course guidance | Practical takeaway |
|---|---|---|
| Begin a practical introductory course | Google’s Crash Course recommends comfort with algebra, functions and graphs, histograms, and means; matrix multiplication and tensor concepts are useful. Calculus is optional for advanced topics. | Begin with these foundations and fill gaps as they become relevant. |
| Take an applied university machine-learning course | Stanford CS129 lists basic probability and linear algebra; its page also lists programming as a prerequisite. | Review probability and linear algebra before or alongside the course. |
| Study mathematical foundations of machine learning | Columbia’s Summer 2026A course assumes undergraduate linear algebra, multivariable calculus, and probability/statistics. | Expect a substantial math foundation for this specific math-focused course. |
| Study rigorous graduate-level theory | MIT OpenCourseWare’s Fall 2015 Mathematics of Machine Learning syllabus lists real analysis, linear algebra, and probability/statistics. | This is a graduate-level expectation, not a universal entry requirement for learning AI. |
These are course-specific expectations, not a single prerequisite list for everyone who uses or builds AI. The MIT course is a graduate offering from Fall 2015, while the Columbia page concerns Summer 2026A; compare them as examples of different depth and scope, not as identical courses.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is a sensible order for learning the math?
- Start learning machine learning. Choose an introductory course and make sure you can work with basic algebra, equations, graphs, averages, and histograms.
- Build linear-algebra fluency. Learn vectors, matrices, and matrix multiplication when they appear in your lessons; progress to more advanced concepts if your course or goals call for them.
- Strengthen probability and statistics. Add probability and statistical reasoning as you move toward applied coursework, model evaluation, or more formal study.
- Study calculus for training and optimization. Learn derivatives, gradients, partial derivatives, and the chain rule when you want to understand how neural networks learn.
- Go deeper for theory. A math-focused or graduate course may assume multivariable calculus, advanced linear algebra, probability and statistics, and—in some cases—real analysis.
This sequence is a practical way to respond to the different entry expectations of beginner and advanced courses; it is not a rule imposed by every course. For structured foundations, Columbia names Mathematics for Machine Learning by Deisenroth, Faisal, and Ong as a useful reference. It is optional, not a prerequisite for starting.
