For Chromecast 4K streaming, Google recommends an internet connection of at least 20 Mbps. For HD, Google TV Help gives a separate guideline of at least 2 Mbps. These are guidance figures, not guarantees: the speed reaching your Chromecast, the app, the video, and your display setup all affect playback quality.

Recommended internet speed for Chromecast

Playback context Google’s guidance What it means
Chromecast 4K content At least 20 Mbps Google’s Chromecast requirements page specifies this for 4K playback with a 4K-capable display. Google Chromecast device requirements
4K streaming, general guidance At least 20 Mbps recommended Google notes that some video apps may need faster speeds. Google’s 4K streaming guide
HD playback troubleshooting At least 2 Mbps A Google TV Help troubleshooting threshold; it is not a replacement for the Chromecast-specific 4K recommendation. Google TV playback troubleshooting
4K playback troubleshooting At least 14 Mbps Google TV Help gives this figure in its troubleshooting steps. The same page lists at least 15 Mbps in its 4K device requirements section.
4K device requirements in Google TV Help At least 15 Mbps A separate threshold from the 14 Mbps troubleshooting guidance on the same page; neither replaces Google’s Chromecast-specific 20 Mbps guidance.

The figures differ because Google gives them in different help contexts. For a Chromecast 4K setup, use Google’s Chromecast-specific recommendation of at least 20 Mbps as the clearest baseline, and allow for the fact that an app may require more. The pages do not establish a universal speed that guarantees stable 4K in every home.

Why your plan speed may not match Chromecast playback

A broadband plan’s advertised rate is not necessarily the download speed available at the TV. Google notes that ISP network availability can change over time and that other factors can affect both connection speed and the best resolution a device can show. Wi-Fi conditions and other devices using the connection can also affect what reaches the streaming setup.

Check performance near the Chromecast rather than assuming the subscription’s headline speed is what the device receives. Google’s guidance does not specify a required speed-test procedure or a universal extra-speed allowance for household use.

What you need for Chromecast 4K

A fast connection alone cannot make a non-4K device or display play in 4K. Google lists these Chromecast models as supporting 4K: Google TV Streamer (4K), Chromecast with Google TV (4K), and Chromecast Ultra. Chromecast with Google TV (HD) does not support 4K.

  • A compatible 4K Chromecast or Google TV Streamer and a 4K-capable display.
  • An HDMI path that supports HDCP 2.2, plus a high-speed HDMI cable and the included power supply, as specified in Google’s 4K guide.
  • 4K programming in the streaming app. The app may have its own requirements, and Google notes that some apps need more than 20 Mbps.
  • For HDR, an HDR-capable display. HDR support is a separate requirement from 4K resolution.

What to check if Chromecast buffers or drops resolution

  1. Confirm the playback chain. Check the Chromecast model, display, app and video title against the quality you want. For 4K, the model and entire HDMI/display path must support it.
  2. Check the connection where you stream. Look at actual download performance near the TV and consider whether other devices or changing ISP availability are affecting it. The plan’s advertised rate alone does not confirm the speed reaching the Chromecast.
  3. Consider Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unreliable. Google lists separately sold Ethernet power adapters for Chromecast with Google TV HD and 4K; Chromecast Ultra’s power adapter includes an Ethernet port. Verify compatibility with your exact model. A wired connection may address an unreliable local Wi-Fi link, but it does not increase the internet speed your ISP delivers.
  4. Recheck the quality requirements. For 4K, verify the screen, HDCP 2.2-compatible HDMI path, content and app requirements. For HDR, verify HDR support on the display.

Google’s Chromecast specifications identify the resolution and network details by model, including the Ethernet options.
