The result depends on the PC and the stream workload, and OBS guidance does not publish a standard whole-system electricity figure for this use. To find your answer, measure the desktop at the wall while it runs your actual stream, convert the measured energy to kilowatt-hours (kWh), then multiply by your electricity rate.
Why OBS loop streams do not have one standard power figure
The useful measurement is the electricity drawn by the complete desktop at the wall over time—not a CPU or GPU utilization percentage, and not a component’s rated maximum. Utilization indicates workload, but by itself it does not tell you how many watts the whole PC draws.
OBS says CPU requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Its minimum system requirements also do not guarantee that a system can stream successfully. A loop based on a static image, a video, browser overlays, or a changing scene can therefore produce different processing demands. Official guidance does not give standardized electricity measurements for those cases.
Encoder and scene settings affect workload, not a known wattage
OBS generally recommends hardware encoding because it moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. OBS still uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes; when those resources are constrained, its troubleshooting guidance recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate and simplifying scenes. These recommendations explain why workload can change, but do not establish a specific wattage difference or prove that one encoder always uses less electricity at the wall.

Do not convert a CPU or GPU utilization reading into a wattage or kWh estimate without measuring power or energy.
How to measure your desktop’s electricity use
- Measure the right equipment. Plug the desktop tower’s AC input into an outlet-based electricity usage monitor that can accumulate energy. Include a display or peripherals only if you want the total for the workstation rather than the PC tower alone.
- Run your normal stream. Use the OBS scene, encoder, output resolution, frame rate, and other programs you intend to leave running. Measure for a representative interval that includes normal workload variation.
- Record energy or average power. If the monitor reports kWh, note the starting and ending readings and subtract the start from the end. If it reports average watts, calculate kWh as average watts × hours ÷ 1,000.
- Estimate the cost. Multiply the measured kWh by the electricity price per kWh on your own bill or plan. Rates vary by location and tariff, so a universal cost figure would not describe every reader’s bill.
The U.S. Department of Energy gives the conversion as power multiplied by time, with watt-hours divided by 1,000 to obtain kWh. For fluctuating power, its Federal Energy Management Program advises measuring energy over a period and dividing by that period to determine average power. A plug-in electricity monitor is one practical way to measure your own setup; choose one that reports accumulated energy if you want a direct kWh reading.

How to compare two OBS configurations fairly
If you want to know whether a settings change affects your own PC, compare equivalent runs rather than relying on a single momentary reading.
- Keep the loop content and stream duration the same.
- Record the PC hardware, OBS encoder, output resolution, frame rate, scene sources, and other programs running.
- Measure average watts or total kWh over equivalent intervals.
- Consider output quality and stream stability alongside electricity use.
OBS documentation describes factors that affect resource demand, but it does not provide test results for specific PC configurations. Any comparison of actual wattage or energy should identify the equipment and measurement method used.
