There is no fixed token cost for a lunch break. Time passing does not by itself use Claude Code tokens: costs depend on whether Claude Code sends requests while you are away, what those requests process, and how your account is billed. If no requests are made, the break adds no token usage. A running session or automation that continues to make requests can use tokens.
What actually determines the cost?
Claude Code usage is driven by model requests, not by a timer. Anthropic says costs vary with the model, the size of the codebase, and usage patterns such as running multiple instances or automation. A five-, thirty-, or sixty-minute break therefore cannot be converted into a reliable token count or dollar amount without knowing what happened during that time.
For API usage, the amount depends on the tokens processed and the applicable model and feature rates. Input and output tokens are distinct, prompt-cache reads and writes have different rates, and tool definitions or results can add tokens. First identify how your Claude Code use is billed

Anthropic’s Claude Code cost guide explains these billing paths and cost controls. Do not treat a displayed session cost as an additional charge if your use is included in a subscription plan.

How to check what your session used
- In Claude Code, run
/usageafter the work period you want to examine. - Check the displayed session totals and, where available, model, token, cache, and activity details. The session cost is calculated locally from token counts at list prices unless your organization has configured a
modelPricingtable. - If you are billed through the API, verify charges in the Claude Console Usage page. Anthropic identifies that page as the authoritative billing view; a local session estimate is not the final invoice.
- Keep the scope in mind. Plan breakdowns can offer last-24-hours and last-7-days views, but those figures are approximate local session-history attributions and exclude activity on other devices and claude.ai.
The current cost guide says /clear resets session totals for API billing in current releases. Because this behavior differed in older versions, check the current guide for version-specific details before relying on it.
How to interpret Anthropic’s published averages
Anthropic’s current cost guide reports around $13 per developer per active day and $150–$250 per developer per month across enterprise deployments; it also says costs are below $30 per active day for 90% of users. These are broad enterprise figures, not a measurement of a lunch break or a forecast for an individual. The guide does not provide a lunch-break token average or a method for converting idle minutes into token cost.

Does Claude Code use tokens when idle?
Elapsed time alone does not create token usage. If Claude Code sends no requests while you are away, there are no new request tokens from that break. If a process, session, or automation continues to send requests, those requests can accrue usage; check your session activity and billing view to see what actually ran.
