1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWebsite visual regression testing can cost nothing in dedicated software fees with a self-managed tool such as Playwright, or hundreds of dollars a month for hosted services. Neither figure is the full project cost: you also need to build and maintain checks, keep screenshots consistent, review differences, and pay for execution infrastructure. There is no established universal market average, so estimate from your own pages, UI states, browsers, viewports, and test frequency.
What visual regression testing can cost
The examples below are public prices shown on official vendor pages checked on October 3, 2026. They are not a like-for-like ranking: each provider counts usage differently and includes different capabilities. Prices and allowances can change, so confirm current terms before budgeting or buying.
| Option | Public price example | What is counted or included |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright Test | No separate visual-testing service fee is listed in its documentation. | Built-in screenshot comparison. The project generates and stores its baseline screenshots; engineering and execution costs remain yours. Playwright visual comparisons |
| Percy by BrowserStack | Free: 5,000 screenshots per month. BrowserStack’s pricing page lists Desktop at $199/month and Desktop & Mobile at $599/month, billed annually. | Percy counts a screenshot for each browser and responsive-width combination. Its billing documentation describes included allocations and overage. The paid prices were visible in BrowserStack pricing search output but that page could not be fully retrieved; verify them directly before relying on them. Percy billing · BrowserStack pricing |
| Chromatic | Free: $0/month and 5,000 billed snapshots; Starter: $179/month and 35,000 snapshots; Pro: $399/month and 85,000 snapshots; Enterprise: custom. | Starter lists additional billed snapshots at $0.008 each. The pricing page advertises TurboSnap, which selects affected tests based on file changes and reuses unaffected snapshots with reduced usage impact. Chromatic pricing |
| Applitools | Starter: $667/month, paid annually. Professional and Enterprise pricing is customized. | Starter lists 100,000 component checkpoints or 1,000 page checkpoints. Professional and Enterprise describe higher-scale options and features. Applitools pricing |
Do not compare these figures as if a screenshot, billed snapshot, page checkpoint, and component checkpoint were equivalent units. Plan limits, browser coverage, and included workflows differ.
How to estimate your website’s monthly cost
- Define what you will capture. Count the pages or components and the meaningful UI states you want to protect, such as logged-in versus logged-out views or different interaction states. A page is not necessarily one billable unit.
- Multiply by browser and viewport coverage. Percy’s billing example says two pages rendered across two browsers and three widths produce 12 screenshots. More browser, width, or device combinations also increase execution work.
- Multiply by monthly run volume. Include pull-request checks, scheduled runs, release checks, and retries. Estimate both a typical month and a busy month to see whether a plan has enough headroom.
- Apply the provider’s actual meter and overage rules. Percy counts browser-width renderings as screenshots; Chromatic uses billed snapshots; Applitools distinguishes page from component checkpoints. Calculate each plan using its own unit rather than translating all of them into a supposed common unit.
- Add internal and infrastructure costs. Account for integration, test authoring, baseline approval, handling dynamic or flaky content, maintenance, CI compute, and time spent triaging meaningful and unwanted differences. There is no reliable general labor rate or total-cost benchmark to apply to every team.
- Check requirements for the plan you would actually use. Compare browser and mobile coverage, retention, concurrency, review and noise controls, CI and source-control integrations, security features, and support—not just the headline monthly price.
Why a free or self-managed option still takes work
Playwright Test can capture reference screenshots and compare later runs with toHaveScreenshot(). Its documentation warns that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode, and recommends using the same environment for baselines and later runs. In practice, baseline consistency is part of the maintenance cost: if the rendering environment changes, screenshots may differ for reasons unrelated to a product change. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A self-managed setup avoids a separate hosted visual-testing subscription, but it does not make test authoring, execution, storage, reviewing diffs, or upkeep free. Hosted plans may package some combination of execution, comparison, review, browser or device coverage, collaboration, and history. Whether that is worth the subscription depends on your workload and team; the published prices alone do not establish guaranteed savings.
Try ScreenshotNeo for screenshot capture
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a visual-diff test runner. It can supply screenshots for a workflow, but you still need a comparison tool and a process for approving or investigating changes.

A single GET request can return a screenshot. This cURL example saves a WebP capture of Stripe; replace the target URL with a page you are authorized to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month—no card required.
Budget for your actual workload, not a headline price
Start with the smallest useful set of pages and states, choose browser and viewport coverage based on your users, then project normal and peak monthly runs using each vendor’s own billing unit. Add the engineering, CI, baseline, and review effort that a subscription price does not include. Recheck vendor pricing and limits at purchase time; the official pages do not establish a universal total-cost figure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is visual regression testing free?
It can have no separate visual-testing service fee when you use a self-managed option such as Playwright Test, but setup, execution, maintenance, and review still consume engineering time and infrastructure.
How many screenshots will my site need?
Count the pages or components and meaningful states, then multiply by the browser and viewport combinations and the number of runs. The resulting count may not match a vendor’s billable unit.
