There is no single internet upload-data price for a 24/7 YouTube stream. The stream’s bitrate determines roughly how much data it sends; your internet provider’s plan determines whether that use costs extra. At a constant 1 Mbps, a 30-day stream sends about 324 GB (decimal), or about 302 GiB, before network overhead. Multiply that estimate by your bitrate in Mbps, then compare it with your plan’s data allowance and billing rules.
Estimate how much data your stream uploads
Use the encoder’s total bitrate, including audio if it is reported separately:
Monthly decimal GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × seconds in the month ÷ 8,000
For a 30-day month, that simplifies to:
Monthly decimal GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 324
This is a calculation from the configured bitrate, not a measured usage figure. It assumes the stream runs continuously at that rate. It excludes protocol overhead, bitrate variation, reconnects and other household internet use. A 31-day month works out to about 334.8 GB per Mbps; a 28-day month, about 302.4 GB per Mbps. Providers may display decimal GB/TB or binary GiB/TiB, so check how your account meter labels its units.

What YouTube-recommended settings mean for monthly upload
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends different bitrates depending on resolution, frame rate and codec. The table shows 30-day arithmetic estimates based on those recommended settings; actual transfer can differ.

These are estimates, not measured usage or a guarantee that a stream will sustain the listed rate. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), but configured bitrate and actual network transfer can vary. YouTube’s automatic transcoding creates viewer playback formats; it does not remove the data uploaded by the broadcaster. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Does that data use add to your internet bill?
That depends on your provider and your specific plan, not on the bitrate calculation alone. If your plan has unlimited data, or your total use stays within its allowance, the stream may not trigger a usage surcharge; your normal subscription charge still applies. On a capped or metered plan, the stream’s upload may count toward the allowance under the provider’s rules. Other household traffic may count too.
Provider policies are not universal. For example, Xfinity’s FAQ, accessed in 2026, says new internet plans include unlimited data, while its 1.2 TB threshold applies only to certain legacy plans and excludes specified plan types and regions. For eligible accounts under that policy, it describes a courtesy month for a first overage in a 12-month period, then $10 per additional 50 GB up to $100 per month. Those terms are an example, not a typical or universal fee; verify the current rules for your account and region in Xfinity’s data plan FAQ.

Xfinity says broadband facts labels show plan price, fees, upload and download speeds, latency and included data. Use the label and your provider’s account usage meter to check the actual offer and allowance for your address; bitrate alone cannot establish your internet bill. Work out the likely impact on your plan
- Find the encoder’s total bitrate. Include audio if it is listed separately.
- Estimate the stream’s monthly volume. Multiply Mbps by about 324 for a 30-day month; adjust for the billing month’s length if needed.
- Account for other household use. Add usage that your provider counts, not just the stream.
- Compare with your plan terms. Check the included-data limit, how usage is measured, and any overage, throttling or other fees.
- Compare alternatives using the full cost. Consider the subscription price, upload capacity and stability, data allowance, overage rules, other fees, and whether the encoder runs at home or remotely.
