Live streaming can cost nothing for software if you use a free tool such as OBS Studio and already have a suitable device and internet connection. The total is not one fixed price: it depends on whether you need a paid studio or platform plan, what equipment you already own, and whether audience delivery is included or billed by usage. For large audiences, delivery can cost far more than creator software.
What goes into the cost of a live stream?
Think of the bill in separate parts rather than looking for one universal startup total. Some are optional or one-time purchases; others recur or rise with usage.
| Cost area | What to check | When it may cost more |
|---|---|---|
| Streaming software | Whether a free tool covers your production needs or a paid plan adds useful features. | When you need features such as branding controls, higher-quality recording, multistreaming, or more guests. |
| Platform or event eligibility | Whether your chosen platform requires a particular plan and what limits apply. | When you need an eligible live-event plan, more concurrent streams, or longer events. |
| Camera and setup | Whether a phone or built-in camera is adequate, or your workflow calls for a separate camera and supported encoder. | When you choose to buy equipment; no universal camera budget is established here. |
| Audience delivery | Whether delivery is included or subject to bandwidth or usage charges. | As viewer count, watch time, and playback quality increase. |
| Cloud delivery infrastructure | For a built-to-order delivery setup, account for encoding, ingest, packaging, origination, and distribution. | At event scale, particularly with many viewers and high-resolution playback. |
Can you live stream for free?
Free software with equipment you already have
OBS Studio describes its live-streaming and recording software as free and open source. If you already have a suitable computer, camera or phone, and internet connection, the software itself need not add a fee. That does not mean every possible cost disappears: your platform may require an eligible plan, and your internet service or equipment choices are separate considerations. See OBS Studio.
When a paid studio plan may be worthwhile
A paid browser studio is optional. It may make sense if you need particular production features rather than merely a way to send a stream. StreamYard lists free and paid plans, but its page warns that prices may vary with promotions, renewal terms, and custom offers. Check StreamYard’s current pricing page for the terms and features available when you sign up.

What platform costs and limits should you check?
Platform rules are specific to the service, so do not treat one provider’s plan requirements as a general rule for live streaming.
Vimeo live events
Vimeo’s live-event documentation says the feature requires an Advanced or Premium plan, or an Enterprise plan with the Events feature added. It describes up to two or three concurrent streams, depending on plan, and a 12-hour limit per stream. These are Vimeo-specific limits, not industry-wide requirements. Vimeo also says a live event needs reliable internet and a camera connected to a supported encoder. Confirm current eligibility and limits in Vimeo’s live-event requirements.

Camera and encoder choices
A camera connected to a supported encoder is part of Vimeo’s documented workflow. That does not establish that every streamer needs to buy a dedicated webcam: another platform or workflow may allow a phone or built-in camera. Whether you need to purchase equipment depends on what you already own and the requirements of your chosen setup.
Why can delivery get expensive as an audience grows?
Audience delivery is the cost area most likely to scale with viewing. Vimeo identifies viewer count and playback quality as primary bandwidth factors; average watch time also matters to its usage estimate. In Vimeo’s own words, “The primary driver however is how many people watch a video or a live stream, and what quality they watch it at.”

Vimeo bandwidth threshold
Vimeo’s current Help Center policy describes a 2 TB (2,000 GB) monthly bandwidth threshold for its plans. Accounts above the intended threshold can discuss custom or enterprise arrangements. This is not a universal streaming fee or a general allowance that applies to other platforms. Vimeo says custom usage is priced per GB with volume discounts, but the cited help page does not give one universal per-GB price. See Vimeo’s bandwidth policy.
AWS event-scale examples
AWS’s 2025 guide illustrates how delivery infrastructure can add up in specific scenarios. These are estimates for AWS US-East-1 standard pricing, not typical creator bills or quotes for other regions or providers.

| AWS scenario | Guide estimate | Key assumptions |
|---|---|---|
| One-hour event, approximately 1,000 viewers at 540p | About $69.74 | US-East-1 standard pricing; no free-tier benefits or discounts; highest-bitrate viewer consumption; 99% cache/hit ratio. Variable bitrate and content complexity may lower the estimate. |
| One-hour event, approximately 10,000 viewers at 1080p | About $1,505.60 | US-East-1 standard pricing; no free-tier benefits or discounts; highest-bitrate viewer consumption; 99% cache/hit ratio. The example assigns $1,492.56 to CloudFront distribution, with the remainder for encoding, ingest, packaging, and origination. |
AWS says prices are subject to change. Treat these as scenario estimates whose outcome depends on region, resolution and profile, viewer count, duration, bitrate, cache assumptions, and applicable pricing or discounts. Read the AWS live-event cost guide for its model and assumptions.
How to estimate your own live-streaming cost
- List what you already have. Identify your computer or phone, camera, internet connection, and any encoder. Separate equipment you already own from possible one-time purchases.
- Choose a platform and verify eligibility. Check the plan needed for live events, concurrency limits, event duration limits, and whether delivery is included or usage-billed.
- Decide which studio features you actually need. Compare free and paid software by the functions you will use, such as guests, branding, recording, or multistreaming. Check current prices and renewal conditions directly with the provider.
- Estimate audience delivery. Use expected viewer count, average watch time, target playback quality, and event duration. For platforms with bandwidth thresholds or custom pricing, ask the provider how your usage is charged.
- Keep geography and billing periods in view. Cloud and subscription prices can vary by region, plan, term, and promotion. Do not compare an event estimate with a recurring subscription as if they were the same kind of cost.
Cost notes for always-on YouTube streams
A creator running a pre-recorded YouTube stream continuously faces a different choice from someone producing a camera-based live event: keep a local computer running, arrange cloud hosting, or use a service built to loop uploaded videos. If you are comparing ways to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7, StreamNeo is the cloud option to consider first: it runs from uploaded videos, keeps going with your computer off, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free.

Quick Recap
Frequently encountered cost surprises
- A free app does not make every part of the setup free. Platform eligibility, equipment choices, and audience delivery are separate from the software fee.
- A low software price is not a delivery quote. For a large event, usage-based distribution can become the larger cost, as the AWS scenarios demonstrate.
- Limits are provider-specific. Vimeo’s plan rules and bandwidth threshold should not be applied to another service.
- Published prices can change. Recheck live pricing, renewal terms, and custom-plan conditions before committing.
