A basic VPS can cost $6 or $12 per month in the DigitalOcean examples below, but that is only the server price—not a complete budget for a 24/7 Indian music YouTube channel. At a constant 1 Mbps, a stream sends about 324 decimal GB in a 30-day month; at 3 Mbps, about 972 GB, before overhead. Music permissions may be a separate and potentially significant cost, and the available sources do not establish an applicable licensing fee for a particular catalog or use.
What a VPS costs—and what that price includes
DigitalOcean’s pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists these two reference plans. DigitalOcean identifies Droplets as virtual private servers (VPSs) and lists Bangalore among its datacenter locations. These are provider list prices for compute and included transfer, not a market average or a complete channel budget.
| DigitalOcean plan | Listed monthly price | CPU and memory | Included transfer | What the example tells you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 GiB plan | $6/month | 1 vCPU, 1 GiB RAM | 1,000 GiB | A lower-cost reference point; it does not establish that this server can encode your chosen stream reliably. |
| 2 GiB plan | $12/month | 1 vCPU, 2 GiB RAM | 2,000 GiB | More memory and transfer than the first example, but still one vCPU. |
Taxes, storage or archive retention beyond what a plan includes, overage rates, monitoring, backup capacity, and support are not established for this particular channel. Check the provider’s current plan terms, transfer accounting, and taxes before you budget. Provider prices and plan details can change.

For a continuous stream, the selected bitrate—not the fact that the content is music—determines the basic data-transfer estimate. At a constant bitrate, use:
#1 Best Overall
Monthly decimal GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000
The calculation assumes all 30 days are streamed at the same bitrate. It excludes protocol overhead, retries, other server traffic, and provider-specific billing rules.
| Constant stream bitrate | Estimated transfer over 30 days | How to use the estimate |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | 324 decimal GB | Compare it with the provider’s transfer allowance, leaving room for other traffic and overhead. |
| 2 Mbps | 648 decimal GB | Still below the 1,000 GiB allowance in the $6 example on a nominal unit comparison, but do not treat that as a guarantee of no overage. |
| 3 Mbps | 972 decimal GB | Close enough to the nominal 1,000 GiB allowance that overhead and other use deserve attention. |
GiB and GB are different units: 1,000 GiB is about 1,074 decimal GB. A 1 Mbps stream’s estimated 324 GB is therefore well below the 1,000 GiB example allowance; 3 Mbps is about 972 GB, also below it nominally. Confirm how the provider measures and pools transfer, and include a margin rather than budgeting right to the limit. If you stream at a variable bitrate, use the encoder’s actual target or a conservative estimate, not the lowest momentary reading.

Build the full channel budget, not just the VPS line
Server rent and transfer
Start with the recurring VPS plan price, then check included outbound transfer and the charge for exceeding it. A 24/7 channel uses bandwidth around the clock, so calculate for all 2,592,000 seconds in a 30-day month rather than a few hours of daily viewing. Verify the billing unit and whether other workloads count against the same allowance.
Encoding capacity
A plan’s price, CPU count, and memory do not prove that it can encode a particular video stream. Capacity depends on the software, codec, resolution, frame rate, visual complexity, and any audio processing. The available information does not benchmark either DigitalOcean example against a specific encoder setup. Test your actual configuration on the server you intend to use, and monitor stream health before relying on it continuously.
Music permissions
Treat music rights as a separate budget item. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for use on Google services, including applicable music licensing rights. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party content: a stream may be replaced with a placeholder, interrupted, or terminated if a match is detected. A license alone may not prevent interruption if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist.
Rank #3
Ask the relevant rights holders about permissions for the exact repertoire, territories, live stream, and any archive, and ask specifically about Content ID allowlisting. The available sources do not state an applicable Indian licensing tariff for a particular catalog or use. Do not assume that a VPS rental, a YouTube account, or a subscription to a music service grants public livestream rights; obtain qualified local advice if you need a legal determination.
Other workflow-dependent costs
- Taxes and any storage or archive-retention charges, depending on the provider and your settings.
- Monitoring or support if you need someone—or a service—to respond to failures.
- A backup encoder or server if you decide the stream needs a second path to recover from a VPS or software failure.
These costs are not quantified for this specific channel. Add only the items your workflow actually uses, and verify each provider’s current terms instead of inferring a total from the server’s headline price.
What to check before relying on a VPS for a YouTube live stream
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Encoder streaming is a supported method. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not plan a new channel’s first stream on the assumption that activation is immediate.

Choose settings from YouTube’s current guidance
YouTube publishes streaming settings that include CBR and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video options, along with AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate, so select settings from YouTube’s current guidance for your intended output rather than treating one bitrate as right for every channel. Use the encoder’s configured bitrate in your transfer estimate.
YouTube recommends leaving upload-bandwidth headroom: its guidance says to leave room, with 20% recommended. For a VPS, check the server’s outbound capacity and transfer policy as well as the encoder setting. A plan’s included monthly transfer does not itself establish the speed or consistency of its network connection.
Preview, monitor, and plan for recovery
YouTube’s encoder tips advise preparing in advance, previewing the stream in Live Control Room, checking backup failover, and monitoring audio and video quality. Those are useful checks for a continuous channel, but they are not a guarantee of unattended 24/7 uptime. Decide who or what will notice a stalled process, dropped connection, silent audio, or a YouTube interruption, and test the recovery path before relying on it.

Common cost and reliability surprises
- Transfer is higher than expected: Recalculate using the configured bitrate over all streaming hours. Check whether retries, other services, or backups also use the allowance.
- The stream runs, but the VPS struggles: A low server price is not an encoding benchmark. Test the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, and software load; reduce the workload or select a suitable server if it cannot maintain the stream.
- YouTube interrupts the music: Check for a third-party content match and contact the rights owner about channel allowlisting. Having a license may not by itself prevent a Content ID interruption.
- The channel cannot start immediately: Verify channel eligibility and allow for YouTube’s stated first-time activation window, which may take up to 24 hours.
- The total is higher than the VPS rent: Check taxes, overage, storage, monitoring, backup, and support terms, then account separately for music permissions.
A managed cloud alternative to running your own VPS
If you want a managed way to keep a pre-recorded YouTube channel live rather than configure and monitor a VPS, StreamNeo is the first alternative to consider: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer, OBS, or home connection needing to stay on. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and team support. The same features apply to every plan; only the billing period changes. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
There is no card required for the first free day, limited to one free day per account. Billing options are a day, a week, a month, 6 months, or a year, and you can cancel any time. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact StreamNeo support. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
