Gemini’s context window determines how much information it can consider together in a single interaction. Google’s current Gemini Apps help page lists limits ranging from 32,000 tokens without an AI plan to 1 million tokens on AI Pro and AI Ultra. Those figures are not a guarantee that Gemini will correctly recall or reason over every detail in a large upload.
What a context window measures
A context window is the amount of information a model can process together in a prompt or interaction. It is not a measure of permanent memory. A larger window can let you provide several documents or a substantial codebase at once, making it possible to ask Gemini to compare, summarize, or find relationships across the material.
Capacity is measured in tokens, which can represent pieces of words as well as image, audio, video, or code content. Tokens do not map one-to-one to words, so a token limit is not a precise word-count limit.
How Gemini’s announced capacity changed
In February 2024, Google introduced Gemini 1.5 Pro and described a major increase over Gemini 1.0’s 32,000-token context window. The new model had a standard 128,000-token window at announcement, while a window of up to 1 million tokens was available to a limited developer and enterprise preview group. Google’s Gemini 1.5 announcement characterized the million-token capacity as experimental.

Google gave examples of material Gemini 1.5 Pro could process in one go: up to an hour of video, 11 hours of audio, codebases with more than 30,000 lines, or more than 700,000 words. These are examples from Google’s announcement, not universal guarantees for every file, task, or version of Gemini.
What a million tokens can—and cannot—do
A million-token window can be useful when a question depends on information spread across multiple files or long documents. Google illustrated the retrieval potential with its Needle In A Haystack evaluation: Gemini 1.5 Pro reportedly achieved 99% success finding an embedded fact in blocks up to 1 million tokens. That percentage describes the specific evaluation, not Gemini’s general accuracy rate.

More input capacity does not ensure that the model will identify every relevant detail or make every connection correctly. Google’s current help page warns that when content exceeds the applicable limit, Gemini may miss details or connections. For tasks that require exhaustive coverage, check important findings against the source material rather than treating a confident response as proof that nothing was overlooked.
How the 2024 rollout expanded
The original million-token preview was not the same as immediate availability to all users. In May 2024, Google announced million-token public previews of Gemini 1.5 Pro and Flash in AI Studio and Vertex AI, and a 2-million-token Pro context through a waitlist. On June 27, 2024, Google said the 2-million-token context for Pro was available to all developers. These were dated developer-access announcements, not a statement of current Gemini Apps limits. For consumers, Google’s May 2024 announcement said Gemini Advanced subscribers would receive Gemini 1.5 Pro with a 1-million-token window and document uploads, with initial availability described as more than 150 countries and over 35 languages. That was historical rollout information, not a current regional availability guarantee. Google’s May 2024 consumer announcement records those details.

Google’s help page describes 1 million tokens as approximately the equivalent of up to 1,500 pages of text or 30,000 lines of code. These are illustrative equivalents, not fixed document-size promises; actual capacity depends on the content and how it is represented.

When a larger window matters
- Comparing documents: A larger window can let you submit several long documents together and ask for differences or common themes.
- Working with code: It can help when questions depend on relationships across many files, although a large context does not guarantee complete codebase understanding.
- Audio or video: Google’s 2024 examples indicate the kinds of media Gemini 1.5 Pro was designed to process; they should not be read as a promise that every current Gemini Apps plan accepts every format or duration.
- Short, focused questions: A huge context window is less important when the task involves only a small amount of information.
